Stay in the Woods,
Dan
I have no land. In fact, I live out of my car. Why I do sometimes, is go out to the lake for the free camping. I run a good Ridgeline, and pitch a tarp. I cook, sit, whittle , think, etc under it, and just sleep in the car 🤷. Also, I live in Tennessee so it's more about staying cool than staying warm here.
I’m in ky, I know what you mean
I’ve lived the “van life” in my Dodge Journey for five years now. People like you and I will be so much more prepared for the coming collapse. Nice to hear from someone else living that life. 👍👍😁🇺🇸
I have that Coalcracker belt pouch, it’s like my most treasured possession.
+1
What else do you own?
Good tips Dan! I've always found staying cool far more difficult than staying warm. This summer was particularly difficult with high temperatures and humidity. To keep warm, you can have a fire, add clothing, add covers like blankets, sleeping bags, etc. and add mass and insulation to a shelter. Staying cool usually means removing or reducing, but you can only do that to a point before you are out of items to reduce or remove, and still may be uncomfortable, or now completely exposed to insects which just make things more uncomfortable. Maybe you could add a video on the best tips and methods for staying cool to your video to-do list?
Very good life saving tips. Thank you

Something else that isnt talked about enough is not just the time of year but also the topographic location of your shelter.
By that I mean if you want lots of sunlight make your camp on a south face. If you want more shade and less sun build on a north face. Just keep in mind you'll want to probably build on a south face in the winter no matter what.
There are massive differences when I come to south face and north faces. The north faces will tend to have different flora and fauna than the south faces and it also changes with elevation. Theres so SO much you can learn guys. Like big mountains tend to have air rush up the mountain when the sun cones up and hits it. Then rush down the mountain in the evening when it cools off and stuff.
Etc.. etc..
Makes me wish I had woods to play in. I do have a row of tall evergreens with a huge old maple tree. Growing up I had some friends.who had woods and some woods next to theirs they were allowed to go in. That was so much fun! For some reason though there wasn't much underbrush. The propertys had rolls to it and right in the middle was a pretty steep gulch (for lack of a better word) where I guess as one point it was dug for power lines? That was fun to go up and down. Our favorite game was to make stacks of brush and kind of a lean to, we did really know how to correctly built one and be had no rope, but we did a pretty good job. That was our "camp" and we would play frontier/ Daniel Boone, and we would decide and how stick fights and we would take the little ones and pretend they where our children and it was just so much fun! After a couple years of not being able to go back there, for different reasons and weather, we went back and tou could still see the remnants of our camp and some of the lean to was surprisingly still halfway upish. Sadly they lost touch with us years ago, so we will never be able to go see our favorite spot again.
Wish I could go build a shelter but I haven't fully recovered from spinal fusion yet..maybe next time..
All y'all have fun and be safe.
Too bad I don't do instagram , would love to Rock one of Your pouches n flint n steele sets.
Same here I would so love this
@@Rev.nighthawk..pjred1984 yep, I had a hand forged striker from Norway but lost it .
I like to use friction bow easy fast
Hi from the UK. I tried building with a porpoise but his flippers weren't very helpful. Lol
Lmao
So long, and thanks for all the fish.
I would like too say that you nailed it on all 5 tips . Getter Done !!!!
1: resources. What materials do you have.
2: time. How long does it take to build the shelter. How long do you plan on using it. (Hours or days).
No use in building a huge shelter for only one night.
3: location. Close to the resources.
Great video
Good tips , thanks for sharing , God bless !
Love the information in this video Dan !!! More tools for the toolbox !! Unfortunately I don't have the land to build the shelter but I still think it's an awesome giveaway !! Take care and stay safe my friend !!!
AHAA I love these kind of videos, thank you for giving us this. You did an AWSOME job 🎉
#1 is so often overlooked. I learned the hard way as a kid that spiders like to be dry warm and cozy just like we do. : )
Hi from Syracuse NY USA brother and thank you for sharing your thoughts and adventures and your family and everyone else
Hey im out near Amsterdam, NY. 518 love man. Hahaha
I teach survival camping my friend
Nice. I have a huge list of videos I'm in the process of producing but I'll be having traditional skills, survivalism, native culture, outdoor skills, gear creation and or reviews, and bushcraft adventures. Been looking to connect with like minded people who are Local-ish.
I'm in the process of trying to start a Native Heritage Park to teach people love and respect for the outdoors.
Grab my youtube and connect on Facebook with the same name for my group.
Maybe we could do a few videos together or just share some skills and experience.
Always down for a campin buddy lol
Most info I've heard from the channel! loved it!
I learn more and more from your videos . Good job !
Great Tips and Great contest Dan... Thanks for sharing
Play in the woods and win neat stuff. Seems like a cool idea. Skillet
As for the debris shelter the roof should be 2 feet thick for and 5 inches longer then your body
Oh wow! I so love those prizes. Im gunna give it a go but I dont have the insta account yet. Idk if I have room lol I'll document my build, I live in the tropics so no doubt I'll be using palm fronds, my little gerber blade should be able to handle it.
Another good video with lots of info.
I guess this video is for those who live sheltered lives. 😉
We make a shelter when we go elk hunting in Montana, in the mountains. Rock on Big Sky !!!!
Hi Dan!
I really enjoy your channel and the practical guidance you provide; your vids are not only fun but I also learn a lot.
I wondered if you have any thoughts about the development of bushcraft over the last 50-100 years, not just due to the tech advances in gear, but also whether today's teachers and proponents have changed their views, specifically in comparison to Horace Kephart, or going further back, your progenitors the "Overmountain Men".
I have one of Kephart's books and though I don't spend much time in the woods (sob!), I do enjoy reading his work. Maybe this is something you could do a video about?
Thanks again for your great teaching, and for showing us the beauty of Appalachia.

What is considered foundation of a house?
Image result for is a building foundation a frame
A foundation is simply the lowest load bearing part of your home. It serves three main purposes. Firstly, the foundation bears the weight of the entire house, transferring the force through to the ground beneat
Most importantly, inside Your shelter, get off of the Ground whenever possible 👍. The Ground will suck the Heat out of Your Body, leave clothing and sleep systems Damp or wet. Great video and instruction, fellow pennsylvanian Here 😊👍
When it is 85 degrees at night sometimes that is a good thing... NEPA :)
@@bjornalansonoutdoors1270 absolutely...... Hopefully most people won't need a survival shelter in 85 degree temps 👍
I’m to poor to afford anything to be able to do bushcraft, but I get to live vicariously thru your videos, I would love to win one of your belt pouches, but we all have wants lol
When you started talking about "lumber support," I momentarily thought this was a chiropractic video. ;-)
Really interesting and useful tips. Many thanks! Greetings from Greece 🏕️😊👍🌲
Genius tips boss 😋👍
Thank you 😘💕
that was really helpful thank you!!!!!!!!!!P.S I Want to like it like five more times!!!!!!
I'm bummed I have a cool little shelter in the woods, but I don't have Instagram oh well...lucky to have UA-cam I guess. LoL stay in the woods be safe.
hey bud, love your short how to vids. but i just bought a gum blanket from youm ans wanted to make sure i can treat it with permethrin?
INSTACRAP!! geesh
A maxim of mine is First set your mind, I carved it in runes on the sheath there as a reminder, but that echoes to me what you're saying about building with a plan,
Know what you want and then take steps to achieve it.
Thanks for your time
Just built my 1st shelter the other day.
I really like this.
Thanks for the video 👍🏼
Very helpful advice keep up the good work1
Nice stuff Dan
Wicked video, wicked channel
Wow, that sounds a really kool hashtag competition. 💯❤👍
Way cool man good video nice job. From Glenn CATT in Massachusetts.
Good information. It really got me thinking, what kind of shelter would you build for a hurricane?🌀 🤔
Earthen shelter on high ground with heavy cover.
I'm interested in your bushman course. However, there's a lot required. Should I consider another course?
would love to enter the contest, but very limited on land and resources to build a shelter... maybe next time
Excellent information
is this competition open to everyone including those of us outside the USA
👍 Nice info. Why was there a message across the screen saying video was removed?
I'd like to build a shelter for year-round in the backyard. I'm in Canada, winters are extremely cold, but summers can get as hot as deserts.
It's just for fun, but I've no idea how to make a year-round one. Any ideas?
Dude! When did you get the new camera?!! Lookin’ great as National Geographic!
Joy your video thank you
I must thank you. I sent for your T6ZERO Emergency Shelter I have not used it yet but it will always be in my pack. Can you use this as you shelter all the time? So muck lighter than a tent. Also take up so little space in your pack !
Cool.
There is a YT channel by a X army guy called corporals corner he builds lot's of different shelters out all sort's of stuff. Well worth watching.
Makes sense.
Please post your pics of shelter that you get. I love to see creativity at bushcraft best. May a giant mantis never craw up your shorts
Please put your knowledge into a book.
I’m from Texas and we have a TON brown recluses, not sure a dead log is a good thing to cuddle up to… it is a different climate though..
Same up here in Kansas. I can deal with snakes and other varmints, but I hate spiders! I actually carry a small can of Raid in my kit. Lol!
Do you guys think you'll ever do a giveaway for your canvas tarp?
Is there a timeframe on when these builds are done or need to be completed by?
in description
winner determined on the 16th.
Thank you
Work smarter not harder
First tip bring a tent
Funny enough I'm going on a hunting trip next week. So I'll see if I can make something interesting while I'm out thete
Good luck to all that try btw it will n.t let me post on my computer but it let me with my phone
What is the availability of your "Stay In The Woods" t-shirt?
Fun prizes but I don't do Instagram or Facebook or Tiktok or any number of other social media things so I guess I'm out! Great video anyway!
Thanks so much man this really helped God bless you all in Jesus name Amen
Who won Dan ?
Would love the gear, but those butterfly handle knives are not legal were I live.
Technically its not a butterfly knife, its a folding machete, the difference is it cant be opened with a flip or gravity, it takes both hands. It circumvents the NY state law against butterfly knives
@@TheModernNativeTribe Not sure it would circumvent Canadian law, they are stricter in their interpretation of what is or is not a butterfly knife.
Ah you might do well to ask Lonewolf 902. Pretty sure that his name. Jeremy Wolf. He has an outdoor channel in Canada and might know about that tool. I think ive seen it in a video of his.
@@JohnGault2398 they are available to buy at Canadian retailers like MEC.
@@TheModernNativeTribe I know of him. He lives in the same province I do. Never met him, but I have seen his videos.
whats the symbol on the hat?
Oh man, I'm from Germany and I wonne win that machete butt that thing would be forbidden in so many ways 😂
Do you want pictures, videos, or both?
... and when you are done with your shelter building, guys, STAY IN THE WOODS :)
Do you get permission to build on these lands or do you just go find a spot in the woods not trying to get shot by a lot and owner
Iirc, he owns a couple acres.
Dang. I hate Instagram.
Will it work on tik tok
Love ya work Dan, You mention this is international comp, how ever what are you to do to in a place like Australia. The trees and bark are so far from straight s you see in the usual clips from US/Canada. Our Aussie bush is so far from what you are suggesting.
Sorry Dan, your tips are good but not applicable in a situation in a totally different environment..I might also add that our Government has us in lockdown, (Google-Melbourne -Victoria-Australia-lockdown) where we aren't even allowed to leave our homes to go "Bush."Regardless. Love ya work Dan. You're a true Rippa!!! 👍👍👍👍👍
I survive, by not being on any social media.
Well hell I'm out cause I don't have Instagram 😔
Love the channel…but Gerber? Every gerber I’ve owned has broken on me. Buy American bush tools like Leatherman, Kabar, or Buck Knives.
I'd like to make a couple additions to your tips. If you have a tarp, mylar blanket, trash bag, shower curtain liner, or any other sheet of water resistant material, use it. Just a flimsy mylar blanket can be laid across a few sticks and piled with much less debris to form a rainproof insulated roof. Fewer sticks will be required to prevent the leaves, etc. from falling through and the debris protects the sheet from tearing. It normally requires a huge amount of debris to achieve a rainproof roof.
The second thing is, if you have time, using some damp punk wood or green leaves to produce a small, temporary, smokey fire inside a debris hut. It will drive the spiders and ants and ticks out so you are less likely to get a bite or sting.
Y'all better hope Shawn on Corporals corner dont build something and enter.
Crap. I have neck surgery tomorrow and will be pretty much laid up for two months.
Vokking bla bla👎👎👎🤮🤮🤮eshol

What’s your problem Ellery? Have you had a bad experience with his equipment?
