Possibly a 12v starter motor on a 6v battery? Might be enough voltage to spin the motor up but not enough juice to crank the engine. Just one possible guess.
If your starter is loose would that not remove the Neg. as the starter is grounded by the bolts being tight?? I would try to ground the starter and try again...
I'm having the same problem as well on my 59 viking. I replaced the switch on the starter and still nothing. It was working fine one day then the next nothing........??????
Needs a set of brushes in the starter..mine 54 has a 6 volt starter and running 12 volt..ran for yrs with 12 volt nonproblems

Maybe you need spacer plates between starter and flywheel. Sounds like starter is going to far in and jamming...👍
