    The Forster Datum dial is a new tool you can use to check base-to-datum for cases (typically for sizing die depth), and also for base-to-ogive (typically for bullet seating depth). All you need is the Forster Datum Dial and a set of calipers, and you're ready to go!
    *Note: this is an updated version of the video: I fixed a couple technical issues that I had stated incorrectly in the first upload (no longer public)

    It is a good looking tool and I am sure it is accurate coming from Forster. I don’t think I would care to take the tool apart ever time I want to swap between datum measuring and ogive measuring. I keep two separate calipers for each task using the Hornady comparators like most folks do, which works out just fine. If I was starting out and didn’t have Hornady set then this might be a good way to go.

    My 1st concern with this piece of equipment from Forster would be VLD Bullets bottoming out on their Meplat. I had that happening with another Companies product and had to buy a body extension to keep from hitting the Meplat before getting a 'true' reading off the Ogive.

  • @johnholmes4960

    Ok, I have a question. On .223, the bullet weights go from 40 grain to over 70. The ogive dimensionally is in the same position from the base. In any configuration of that .223 bullet, it is always the same. Right now, any other caliber is not important. The over all cartridge length seems to only matter when it comes to fitting into the magazine and through the breach into the chamber. -lease explain. Thanks.

    Gavin great review of a wonderful product. I'm a big fan of Forster products case I have a coax press and a lot of their micrometer bullet seating dies. Can't wait to get my hands on one of these set ups. Be ordering really soon. A little off topic but did you happen to watch the Democratic Socialist during their debate? It's pretty clear they want to take $0.70 on every dollar you make to find illegal immigrants with housing food and Medical Care not to mention taking away every semi-automatic firearm in the US. We all have to do our part to push forward a positive influence on today's younger children that are just now becoming adults and being able to vote. I cannot believe after living through the Cold War against socialism that this country is actually got a Democratic Socialist Party that wants to take every freedom away from every man woman and child in this country. I know you're not big into Political agendas but this is something I feel we all need to make a step in the positive direction for. We need to let the Socialist Democratic party know we will not stand for this in the United States of America we the people tell them what to do not the other way around. God bless and take care, Echo.

      The Datum Dial is a really nice mechanism, and packaged in a compact way. The Hornady/Sinclair tools are good as well, but there's more pieces to deal with. The finish (Anodizing) on the datum dial wheels is better, seems like it will hold up better.

      In my option. Any gauges like these or the Hornady is a relative number to you. Just the machining tolerance can very from one to another. The number you get is for you and you only if your looking to get within a thousand. If you use the same one every time you’ll be good.

      I ordered it and sent it back a week later. Unlike Gavin's mine had straight cut holes vs beveled edge holes. The tool was marking up bullets and brass because, like Gavin, I like to spin brass/bullets to get everything trued up. Hornadys comparitor doesn't mark up brass/bullets. It's unfortunate, I like and use Forster products.

    I understand the theory behind these types of measurement devices but the question I have, in the case of base to datum, where can this information be found? None of the case drawings I've looked at list the base to datum dimension.

    • @VincitOmniaVeritas7
      @VincitOmniaVeritas7 2 роки тому +1

      Just check the SAAMI website. In the cartridge diagram, search for numbers noted with a circle with a “x” inside, these measurements are the headspace (horizontal) and datum diameter (vertical).
      In the 6.5 creedmoor example like in the video, you will find the reference datum diameter is indeed 0.400” according to SAAMI.
