Best known for his work with The Smiths, The Cranberries, and Blur, today we are talking with English music producer, Stephen Street!
Street began his musical career in the late 1970s playing in various bands in London. He then started at Island Records as an in-house assistant and then as an in-house engineer.
The Smiths and Morrissey
One of Street's first jobs as in-house engineer was for a session for The Smiths's "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now”. He then worked on their album Meat Is Murder, with Morrissey and Marr producing for the first time.
Street continued to work with The Smiths, working as an engineer on their album The Queen Is Dead before assuming a producer role for Strangeways, Here We Come, their final album.
After The Smiths broke up, Street worked with Morrissey as a producer and co-songwriter on his album Viva Hate. This album reached No. 1, spawning two top 10 hits in the UK. Street went on to co-write and produce two further singles for Morrissey which appeared on Bona Drag.
Blur
After hearing "She's So High", Blur's first single, Street contacted their manager. Soon after he produced their second single "There's No Other Way", although he did not produce the album as a whole. Street produced Blur's next four albums: Modern Life Is Rubbish, Parklife, The Great Escape and Blur.
Street produced Blur's 2015 album The Magic Whip, their first since the band's reformation with Coxon.
The Cranberries
In 1992, Street started working with Irish band The Cranberries on their debut album Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?. The album turned out to be a huge success in the U.S. In 1994, Street worked with the band again on their second album No Need to Argue.
Street worked with the band on their fifth album Wake Up and Smell the Coffee and the two extra tracks that were recorded for their 2002 best of album Stars: "Stars" and "New New York".
Street also produced their sixth studio album Roses, released in 2012. He also produced their final album In the End, released in 2019.
In February 2020, it was announced Street will receive the Outstanding Achievement Award at the upcoming Music Producer's Guild Awards.

Who are some other producers you would like to hear from?
deadmau5
John Simon(Music From big Pink/The Band-Brown album
Brendan O’Brien
James Ford (Arctic Monkeys, The Last Shadow Puppets) would be great.
Flood!
Blur self-titled sounded like a 70s album made in the 90s and the songwriting was otherwordly - one of the absolute all-time classics
Indeed Dan, masterpiece!
A really great interview, sir!
I’d super-like this comment if I could. It’s my favourite ever guitar based record.
Good album alright.
Great album but which part sounds 70s??
*With The Smiths and more notably Morrissey changing-up producers on almost every album, I can honestly say that Mr. Street is still to this day the BEST producer of Morrissey's voice !!! He brought out something in Morrissey's vocals that no other producer has been able to do since then.*
Agreed 100%!!
"And on cold leather seats Well, it suddenly struck me" It's another golden interview from Warren. Thank you guys for giving my obsesive record listening in my youth some new dimensions.
Thanks ever so much Jens!
Almost all the album and bands that this man had a hand on became a influence and most loved albums of my life.
Yes, agreed 100%!
The first two Cranberries albums are so well produced, still amazed me to this day
So good!!
Yes!! Absolutely amazing!!
Fairly sure it was Steve Albini who was behind that roomy sound on Surfer Rosa, even though Street mentioned Gil Norton as the producer. But Norton did great work with them on their later albums.
Stephen Street is always a pleasure in these interviews. He seems to be a fan of the music just as much as we are, so he knows whats interesting info to the listener. Great upload! :)
Graham is an absolute guitar god!!! So underrated.
Yes! Huge fan!
Stephen is so passionate about music it’s such a pleasure to hear him talk about it.
Thanks ever so much
Working with Sophie and Stephen is one of my best memories of the late 90’s. Legendary producer and a diamond geezer!
Amazing!
What a great interview! I love the smiths and morrissey and it was great to hear the walk through history
Wow... what a great interview. It’s long but it never felt that way and I could listen to these stories for another hour! Please pass on my appreciation!
Great interview. His work with The Smiths, Blur etc was fantastic.
Agreed 100%!
Warren, this is one of your best interviews. So much knowledge and insight. Thank you for bringing these legendary Producers to UA-cam.
So inspiring.... the goal is Great Music, always!!
Thanks for this interview Warren. I grew up in NYC and was introduced to British indie music (as some called it then) by a girl I met at CBGB when I was 15 in 1982. Wire, Joy Division & New Order, The Cure, Cabaret Voltaire, Sisters of Mercy and then The Smiths appeared and everything changed. At first everyone was with The Smiths til the hipsters fell out, but I love hearing the inside story of those times. And he worked with Massive Attack, wow! Love this interview!
Fabulous. Thanks.Superb.
Such a great interview and set of stories. Thanks for just letting him talk and not interrupting (like so many other interviewers do).
He's produced some era defining music from the 80s to present.
No idea how you got him to do it but hats off to you.
Looking forward to the next.
Me and my mates recorded an album with Stephen back in 2006. Really nice fella. Incredible experience. Really enjoyed watching this. Thanks!
Blur, Pulp and Suede was the peak of British 90’s. Very interesting interview!
These days are over for bands. I am so happy that I was around in the 80’s for music. In my opinion it is the best era of music! Thanks boys for this interview. Love it
One of my favorite producers of all time. Such an amazing talent and sharp mind
Agreed! Truly amazing resume!
I'd been hoping for this!
Warren, you hero!
Thanks ever so much! Stephen Rules!!
Nice interview about the many bands that Stephen worked with.
Fantastic interview, he's one of the producers I dreamed about being able to make a record with. Such an amazing body of work.
Yes! I’m a huge fan!!
Great interview, I really enjoyed it! Stephen Street has produced many of my favourite bands and solo musicians (Blur, The Smiths, Graham Coxon, Morrissey, Suede, Cranberries, Kaiser Chiefs, etc.).
Love these videos! Thanks a lot. By far my favourite producer!
Thanks ever so much
Wonderful interview with so many tid bits of information and insight. Thanks very much for putting this together!
Thanks ever so much Terry!
Great interview with such great stories about my favourite bands ,I know nothing about music production but still it was so interesting. Thank you
Thanks ever so much Mark!
You have the best channel. Thank you so much for taking the time to make videos.
Thanks ever so much!! I really appreciate it
What an interview! I just feel blessed 😻Thank you!
Wow! Thanks ever so much
Thanks for this Interview Stephen Street did so many Of my favorite Albums.Great Producer.I am an american that was big into Britsh Indie. He allways brings that Indie guitar sound through.Queen is dead is my favorite Smiths
Great interview. Parklife and The It Girl were two of my favourite albums when I was young.
Great albums!!
Great interview Warren, one of the best! What an amazing career, really great the way Stephen comes across, 'Girls & Boys' one of my all time fav singles.
Thanks ever so much! Yes, amazing single!
Really enjoyed this. Great interview. Huge respect to Stephen Street what an amazing producer!
Thanks ever so much!
Warren, many thanks for shining a light on this segment of guitar pop. For an American kid from the Midwest, the Britpop years saved my teens from the doldrums of middle America.
This music is really more important in the lineage of guitar music than it has been credited here in the States by the press and various academies. It hues much closer to the Big Bang of popular music than what the official record may reflect to American audiences.
you know i never could have imagined that i would be able to have this access, to the behind the seen people that have recorded my favorite music.
thanks Warren.. was really great watching this
Thanks ever so much my friend!
The Smiths, one of the greatest, most important bands of all time! this interview is gold. As a musician trying to get somewhere recording and mixing it all myself this is invaluable.
Unbelievable having Streety on this channel! This was a phenomenal interview, thank you so much!
Thanks ever so much Anderson!
He co-wrote Viva Hate, and that only is enough for me.
Indeed!
Well apparently Twisted every Dial. Pressed every Button. Did the Dishes. Made the Tea, Styleed Morrisseys Look and personally invented every single Music Scene known to Man. Street certainly knows how to embellish Reality. Just saying.
His guitar work, bass or otherwise, on Viva was pretty amazing.
He ripped off Vini Reilly you mean
Thanks a lot for this interview, Warren! Meat is Murder is my favorite album of all time…Viva hate, man, what can I say, awesome…enjoyed this interview so very much.
Hi Dirk, thanks ever so much!!
Unbelievable. There are no words to descrybe how happy I am with this video. Blur's Leisure album is the sound of my dreams, thank you so so so much.
you’d dig my stuff then, really inspired by that sound, and that particular record even! 🤙🏽
Brilliant interview, Cheers to both
Thanks ever so much
This interview is soooooooo amazing!!!! Yes, this are some of our favorite records this man produced! :) Thank you Warren and Stephen, learned a lot!
Thanks ever so much Ady
Great work Warren..... ridiculous detail as always...stephen is a legend
Thanks ever so much Stuart!
Fantastic interview, Stephen's discography is legend.
Agreed 100%!
Thank you Stephen and Warren❣️
Thanks ever so much
This was so good I had to watch twice!!!
Wow! Thanks ever so much
Thoroughly enjoyable video! I especially enjoyed the Blur and other stuff, but it was also great to hear about The Smiths and Morrissey recordings. I appreciate Stephen's ethics about producing the band and not forcing his own sound on the band.
Thanks ever so much Lee!
If my record collection consisted of only music that Stephen Street was involved in... I'd probably do just fine... What a brilliant body of work. I'm still awestruck when I listen to Park Life and Modern Life is Rubbish. What the hell were they putting in the drinking water in the UK in the 70's, 80's and 90's?!? The guitar based bands during these decades created an astonishing number of incredible albums. I bet 90% of my music collection ( at least what I still listen to) hails from the UK. Can someone explain that?
Agreed 100%! An amazing repertoire!
Its in their blood. Brazilians know how to play football, jamaicans run faster, brits know how to produce something beautiful out of strumming 6 strings. Theres no other explanation
It’s the shit weather mate..
Great interview Warren! I had the pleasure of working with Stephen years ago on The Cranberries album Roses. Such a musical producer, and a treat to work with. What a career!
Wow! Please email me at warren@producelikeapro.com
You gotta be kidding me Warren! Been hoping for this one!! Can't wait to watch, already given a like cos I know it'll be sooo good!
Thanks ever so much Roy!
One of the best! Thanks Warren.
Thanks ever so much Tony!
WOW IM SAVIN THIS FOR WHEN I GET HOME FIRST TIME I HEARD THE SMITHS/MOZ - QUEEN IS DEAD WITH THAT VOICE AND WITH LYRICS LIKE IVE NEVER HEARD I WAS SAVED!
Thanks ever so much for sharing!
I *loved* The It Girl. Sleeper is such a cool band. Thanks for this interview, Warren!
Thanks ever so much Daniel!
just two weeks ago, i was talking to friend about the great works of street , especially how modern life is rubbish is an excellent album, from the standpoint of production. happy to hear a very good interview with him on your channel. keep to bring interesting content
Fantastic! Really glad you enjoyed the video!!
I like it when there's an album you can't just put in one genre! 🌟🎉
Agreed 100%!
Wonderful interview, Warren! Feels like maybe there's a part 2 to come?
Definitely!! Thanks ever so much
Incredible video with a giant of the Music Industry!
Agreed! Thanks ever so much!
What an interview! Suddenly, I have a lot of listening to do...
Thanks ever so much Pete(y)!
Smashing interview with a smashing fellow!
Thanks ever so much!
The Smiths and Blur are iconic in their own right! Awesome work!
Agreed 100%!!
@@Producelikeapro Yeah!
@@RC32Smiths01 Thanks!
@@Producelikeapro You are always welcome!
I thought at the time and still do that 'Girls and Boys' musically owed more to the Skids circa Days in Europe/ Goodbye Civilian.
Also good to hear The Mighty Lemon Drops get a mention - such a shame they never made it as big as they should have.
It seemed the music press never let them forget that Like and Angel sounded exactly like When I Dream by the Teardrop Explodes.
This is too good Warren!! Man.. makes my week! Thanks
... If by chance Stephen sees this: Come On You Rs! 🔵⚪️🔵⚪️
Wonderful video with a true pioneer of music production!
Agreed 100%!!
Great stuff from Stephen. I'm a big Furs fan and World Outside is my favorite album because all the songs work together, the same "feel". I like his approach to producing, very upfront and honest.
Marvellous!! Thanks ever so much Greg
huge mozzzzz fan here....thanks for an amazing interview, and Stepen's work is pretty unique (both smiths and moz).
Thanks ever so much
Huge fan too!
Really enjoyed this, great recollections from Stephen making for a fascinating listen 👍 My only quibble was no mention of his work with The Triffids on their 'Black Swan' LP! Would have loved to hear his thoughts on working with the genius that was David McComb; such a mesmeric writer of really epic songs. Some insight into working with him on this record would have been fantastic. Maybe next time!
Warren, the only problem with this interview is it's too short. Fantastic stuff, thank you for this..!
Thanks ever so much!!
Loved his work with Babyshambles and Pete Doherty
Me too!!
This is a wonderful series..thanks
Thanks ever so much
Also, I never see any interviews with Mike Hedges (The Cure, Siouxsie & The Banshees) - or John Fryer.
Marvellous idea!
@@Producelikeapro Ask him about that EMI TG12345 he sold at auction...:)
Yeah, I'd love an interview with Hedges too... very happy to be treated to such a lengthy interview with Street. It's really great to see these names on the liner notes being given a platform - thanks very much PLaP!
"Songs in the Key of Life" in the background? Insta-LIKE. And great interview; Mr. Street's work has been part of my own musical DNA from the way-back. Thanks.
Thanks ever so much! Yes, huge fan of Stevie Wonder!!
One off the wishlist - thanks Warren!
My pleasure!
One off my wish list too!!
What!? I love Stephen Street!! I really like these backstories as well. I used to read NME and Melody Maker too. The British make the best rock music. The best!
Thanks ever so much Edward!
Just updated Streety's Wikipedia page as it had stated he'd initially approached the Courteeners (when it was actually the other way around)... My day's duty is done :P Massive Blur fan so thank you for this amazingly informal and informative interview (and the one you did with Graham as well).
Haha thanks ever so much
What a BEAUTIFUL CAREER he has had!
I was totally into the Smiths in my school days. Brilliant sound and such clever lyrics. Marr's dreamy guitar parts coupled with Morrissey's sarcastic barbs was just what I needed at the time. How Soon is Now was just so amazing and different. Thanks for an amazing interview with an icon. Do you know Bob Rock (personally I mean)? As a fellow Canuck I thought I would vote for him as a producer to hear from. He seems like a very humble and talented fellow.
That would be amazing! I don't know Bob, but would love to interview him!
cool stuff and most of the bands i liked back in the day
Yes, an incredible resume!
What's freaking me out about this video is, I have the same Jam and Pet Sound boxsets on my shelf in the same order of stacking, they're right in front of me right now as I type, spooky. Great interview btw!
Fantastic!! Thanks ever so much!
Thanks!. Really interesting.
Another brill video, many thanks. Wouldn’t have minded if it was The Smiths and only! I would have asked him about “Last night I dreamt..” I took that record back to the shop because I thought it had a fault, that strange drum timing, when I got the cd I realised it was intentional .
Co-writes The Ordinary Boys with Morrissey then some ten years later gets to produce a band named after a song he co-wrote! Awesome.
My wife bought recently all smiths albums, I really like them, and lot of the songs sound really good actually - and cranberries ohh man great sounding, nooo absolutely amazing sounding albums and music
Thanks ever so much for sharing!
Great producer and some great great albums! Sad to see Matrix Maison Rouge go the way of so many studios.. now it’s the car park for Chelsea football ground, Stamford Bridge. :(
Oh!!!! SS is an absolute legend! Nice one Warren! He soundtracked my childhood/ adulthood. This man deserves an MBE. Cheers mate, and I'll kick back and listen to the man himself.
Thanks! Agreed! Stephen Street MBE sounds good to me!
This was AMAZING. I would've loved to hear about his time recording The Promise Ring's Wood/Water but I know that's a pretty niche record but it's really great.
Definitely a part two coming Matthew!! It was incredible talking with Stephen!
Very cool record.
The Ordinary Boys' 1st album was incredible. Settle Down is a belter!
Leckie w/a lot of focus on Magazine, Stone Roses, and The Verve!
Watch this space!!
I can't overstate what a masterpiece I think "A Storm In Heaven" is - I'll take as many geeky details about that one as I can get! (Same with any Magazine, really)
Not to mention early Simple Minds, The Fall, The Bends by Radiohead. The more you think about it, few producers have been involved in so many truly incredible lps
Get him talking about 'The Dukes'... ;)
10:58 - I was a huge ‘shock headed Peters’ fan back in the day! …didn’t know he’d worked with them but I wish they were on Spotify😂
Thanks for sharing
Very nice! I worked with Stephen for a couple of days when I was at the Townhouse. I think I emailed you during that time, actually, it was with that band Gene. Unfortunately, I was a last resort as far as assistants went, as everyone else was ill and I was only the runner. I think the comment that came back was, "He's a nice guy, but he doesn't know very much." I think that's the subtitle to my autobiography!
Also, re: Andy Rourke's bass lines. Melody?! You bet your arse, they had more melody than Morrissey's vocals!
Binski! Looking forward to your autobiography! Yes, Gene! I remember Martin very well, I do wonder how he is doing? Lovely fellow indeed
@@robin_holden melody times 1,000,000!
@@Producelikeapro He teaches music in Brighton. He’s doing a “farewell” tour this year playing his solo work and Gene songs. Sadly not with the others from Gene (who were great).
Seems like a very nice chap:) Ooh! I loved Stephen Duffy, totally forgot about him👍
Mike and Andy never get enough credit, especially Andy, who came up with unique basslines (e.g. Barbarism Begins, etc.). Nice to hear both of you giving them credit.
Thanks! Huge fans of every member of The Smiths!!
@@Producelikeapro What's your favorite Smiths' album?
@@EndoftheTownProductions wow! I started with them from the beginning! I don’t have a favourite album! Of everything Stephen did them is superlative!
i must say you have the best job lol . love looking over your stuff and i must say i am learning form some of the stuff you post my mix is getting better. mm maybe lol NashDrift on sound cloud. cheers all the best keep up the good work
Hi Nash! Thanks for watching!
Fuck me. My mate introduced me to the Cranberries in 96 when I was 10. Then I felt so free once I "discovered" the Smiths and Blur. And fuck, they were all produced by Stephen, and he was the backbone to fave, Graham Coxon's solo career. Musical royalty, that's what he is, init?
He certainly is Rock Royalty!!
If you've ever heard an interview with Johnny Marr (The Smiths) you might notice Johnny and this bloke have the exact same way of speaking, mannerisms etc. Uncanny! (no surprise given they spent so much time together as youths)
Stephen Street used to be in a band with my uncle!
Very cool
Another coincidence, the studio manager mentioned was my brother Trevor.
@@bjornagaintobywilde amazing!
@@Producelikeapro they're still friends.
Marvelous. :)
Steven did some superb work with The Psychedelic Furs too
Agreed
Modern life is rubbish, was always my favorite Blur album. It has aged well also.
Yes, it has! It’s a masterpiece
Hugh Jones and Ian Broudie did some great work as well!
Could you ask him about working with Suede on Positivity . That was Alex Lee from sister group Strangelove on keyboards btw. As well as the songwriting on Viva Hate.
