  • I just run a simple overhead fillet weld with 7018 1/8" and the amperage ste at about 120. I forgot to mention in the video but I'm just doing a small weave bead. I'm not going crazy with the weave but, it's slight and I'm not just dragging the welding rod. Stop by weldwithavengea... for more welding tips and techniques.

You will need to get specific 7018s made for AC. They usually have 7018 AC printed right on the flux. They will help with the severe sticking problem you would encounter to try and start and keep your arc going.

The way I look at it is if I was a welding instructor and my students were watching your video and coming to me with welds like yours and I was rejecting them id get a load of flak from them.
Oh and the arc on that Miller sucks ! Get a Lincoln ;-P

like your big 20 that are not new go out of calibration... Id run that joint at 130 - 140.
If you get rid of that cold lap on the bottom the slag will come off a lot easier. Run hotter and a stringer with a tight arc, too slow = cold lap. I don't mean to be a jerk I know you're trying to help guys.

As a welder I really hate to be that guy but man do you really feel that is a good overhead weld ? Look at how much of a beating the slag is taking to come off ? You should rake with a chipping hammer not pound. Done right the slag should come off this weld relatively easily. I think you are going way slow which is why you are getting cold roll on the bottom. Lose the weave and run a stringer I cant tell but you may be cold too, I know you say you have your machine on 120 but machines

Oh and by flak I mean they would be saying what is wrong with my welds ? The guy on youtube who is a welder welds like this.. Personally if it was my video id take it down and do a do over. If you want to get into this and teach people do it right.
Sorry for being a jerk but it is what it is..
