I’m not sure why people say the message of this song is obscure? Seems pretty clear to me that it stresses the importance that stereotypical femininity ≠ weak.
The dynamic of Marie Antoinette, known primarily for femininity, vs Joan of Arc, a relatively masculine female figure, isn’t to pit women against each other but to encourage traits regardless of how they’re seen socially “Cause I’m feminine and soft but I’m still a boss”. The idea of “Marilyn Monroe in a monster truck” is arguing that women who dress in soft flowing clothes (MM being the epitome of ‘Yin’ femininity in a ‘Yang’ masculine mechanism) etc. can still be badass (“Karate-chopping the clichés and norms of in a dress”). Dressing feminine doesn’t stop women from doing awesome things and it doesn’t stop women dress it suits achieving things either. The whole point of feminism is freedom, not ridicule. Even if she’s put in Rococo wigs she doesn’t want and forced to play nice with men she hates, she still stands up for herself even at the cost of social ‘death’ or disgrace.
The overall point is that women shouldn't have to adopt masculine traits to be respected if they prefer standardised femininity, and instead of ridiculing women who do we need to pay attention to their character and how they stand up for themselves. Basically women supporting women in a very cool feminist anthem! Not vague at all. A lot of this is integrated into the video too but hope that clears stuff up.

the album was far from a flop, it did really good, but considering katy's past work, its her lowest performing, which is why people called it a flop, the first single, chained to the rhythm, did great, but it went downhill from there.
the problem with the album was that the average person (back in 2017) hated 'bon appetit' because this album was labled as a political album, and people called katy a hypocrite for putting it on a 'political' album, and the video made people hate it even more, and the same thing happened with 'swish swish', also not to mention those really awkward interviews during this era. the album itself is amazing, they just chose the *wrong* singles, which by the time this song came out, it was way to late for katy, as this song was released month after the official album was released, and people had lost hope after 'swish swish' and 'bon appetit'.
im just happy that 3 years after the album released, people are starting to realize what this album really was!
cant wait for #Smile to release either, katy will forever be my one of my favorite artists.

I really miss her old songs.... As a kid, I would sing karaoke to "California gurls" ,"fireworks", etc. I feel like she's starting to change, and I guess that's OK for some musical artists, but I wish she'd go back to the old Katy. I like her old songs too. But she is exploring her creative side. Everyone goes through a point in their life where they just do everything completely new. Your tired of same old same old. She's exploring her creativity and discovering herself more as an artist. She is making very mature songs and some people cannot handle it. Don't get me wrong I love the old songs, but do they really mean anything? Sure there really fun songs and lighthearted. But she is singing about deep topics that are important to her and she is being true to herself. The song is catchy as hell and the video is a little weird but its about historical strong women. I think it sends a really good message to young girls and women in general. Its about female empowerment and strong women so I don't care how weird the video is, the songs a bop and its meaning is very important in this day and age.
The thing about her songs from her older albums is that she doesn't go off on a tangent using so many different ideas in one song. She kept it simple. California Gurls has a clear inspiration (Candyland California). Fireworks has a clear inspiration (4th of July). Roar has a clear inspiration (Cat to tiger). Teenage Dream has a clear inspiration (the rebellious teen). Most of her songs from Witness change in inspirations mid-music making them clunky and offputting. Like this one, is it supposed to be about Marilyn Monroe, Marie Antoinette, martial arts and yoga, or underestimating a baby? Pick one, not all.
