FYI balena etcher was not detecting my SD card. I bought a new micro SD from target and flashed it with balena and the Ditto X4 is alive again!! So happy to have it working a couldn’t have done it without this vid. If balena doesn’t detect the SD, replace it!
Saved me from a bricked x4. You rock!!! I'm sure it's been pointed out before but you do not need to remove the jack plate, only the bottom. I wonder how many tens of thousands of dollars you've saved people just from this video.
This is honestly probably one of the best tutorials I've ever seen on UA-cam. Short, sweet, and to the point. I like it! I was able to get my X4 to work!!!
Just came here to say I just re-flashed my Ditto x4 using this after it bricked itself on firmware upgrade. Worked great, firmware file still available. Thanks for video
Dude. You rock. I've been carrying this busted DittoX4 pedal around for like 6 years and today is the first day it's ever worked! Thank you so much for taking the time to make this vid and share this info! Bout to dive in a start my first looping session thanks to you. Cheers! Matt
This video fixed my Ditto x4. My Ditto X4 has been bricked since about 2017-ish. It happened about 6 months to 1 year after it was purchased. TC was no help because I couldn't verify that I had a warranty. My Ditto was a gift from my partner and we could not find the original 3rd party purchase confirmation. Needless to say my Ditto x4 has been sitting in its box unused for almost 3 years.... Until today. Thanks so much for sharing this with everyone.
Dude, awesome! Comments like this make me so stoked to be of help! Thanks, Brian. Like they say, "DIY or die"! Hope your pedal serves for many years to come. Spread the wealth.
It Works!!!!!! Amazing. Really great helper video and links. I immediatly reinstalled the image to another SD card and taped it to the pedal. Thanks. This should be on TCs page
Disculpa, me puedes ayudar con los archivos enviándomelos por correo, pues ya traté por varios medios, el mega me dice que superé el limite de descargas y el balenaEtcher se queda estático y no descarga, por favor ayuda.
THANK YOU SO VERY VERY MUCH. I am so thrilled I got my pedal to work again! Your video is very clear, concise and you have a great sense of humor. Your music is great, too! You're my new favorite!
Where do you get this SD card image? is this just an ad for MEGA. The MusicTribe Forum is unavailable. I was so happy when I saw this and the other video. But now I'm stuck. Please help.
Thanks! Yeah insufficient power can cause wackiness in any pedal so thats a great point. This one was using the stock tc supply that came with the pedal so I ruled that out after I tried another power supply with a similar rating but I can see folks having problems not using the stock power or plugging into say, a low mA plug on a brick style power supply.
I think this is what I’ve been looking for! I don’t think my X4 is “bricked” like what is shown in the video, but my pedal is still not working correctly. I currently cannot undo individual loops. I can only delete everything at once.
I'm not sure how, but this worked for me! Thank you. downloaded the image and flashed the card with Balena Etcher as described. Balena Etcha ran but told me that it failed to flash the intended drive. I tried a few more time but after the first time Balena Etcher kept failing and giving a warning that the file was corrupt. The card itself was still named DittoX4 after the flash failed so without many other options I put the card back in the ditto and miraculously it came back to life. Hope it continues to work!
Hey thanks Falayta Productions! Glad to be of help. We've just recently found out that sometimes the card can get shifted or josseled inside its catch, causing this issue as well. Perhaps that was part of your pedals problem. Spread the wealth of knowledge my friend!
Ian Douglas Music I had tried to reseat the disk at least three or four times prior and had even mounted it in my computer prior to trying to flash the card as described in your video. Nothing seemed to work until I tried to flash it, and as I said it told me that it failed but maybe it did do something? Or maybe I just got it to sit correctly after repeated tries, but when it did work it looked like it was in the same position it always was when inserted. Anyway, figured I would mention it in case anyone has a similar experience.
Hello, thank you for sharing this information. I wanted to ask you, if it is possible that you have the image of version 1.2 or 1.3, since the one that this upload is version 1.0, thank you very much in advance.
I have a more serious problem, for some reason the memory card gets too hot and it broke, I used another one that I had from an old cell phone and it burned it too, it get so hot that you cant touch the slot, the boards look good and with the naked eye you cant see any damage. Has this happened to someone? How did they fix it?
Hey Steven. You dont need a mac. Any computer with an sd reader will do. I want to say that since you’re re-etching the card, essentially re-writing it, re-formatting the card (which erases everything) would be fine. However, I have to say, this is not professional advice!

What’s the reason the ditto becomes bricked ? Is there any way to avoid that happening ? I’ve gone through 2 of these pedals already and they both did the same thing
Hey Jed, thanks for the comment! Wish I had an answer but I don't know, man. It's not even so much that they break, as it's the negligence of TC, as a company, to be like "hey, we made a faulty product and sold it for hundreds of dollars. We're sorry. We'll do what we can to make it right, send it in". Instead they continue to sell them and if someone wants it fixed, you have to send it to TC and give them another $89 from what I hear. My best advice for anyone reading this; please buy from independent pedal builders! There are thousands of independent builders nowadays and they're phenomenal! Or buy somewhere other than TC, because they're too busy counting their millions to worry about customers who gave them those millions. But that's just this humble tech's opinion. Till then, share the wealth of knowledge so folks can at least get their tools back in working order in spite of the crummy companies that make the tools!
@@iandouglasmusic7486 Thanks for the information! It's weird that this isn't told straight away in all videos about the Ditto X4. Hey, Ian. I did not see that. However, I did just see a JHS video that mentioned Behringer (TC's parent company) not only owns and operates MusicTribe, but has their own city in China called "Behringer City", which is terrifying in it's own right. I'd imagine capitalist trash like that would not want the wealth of information and DIY enthusiast's out here teaching folks how to repair their sub-par equipment that people bought with their hard-earned dollars. The farther down the rabbit hole I get with TC and Behringer, the uglier it gets. Please spread the wealth of knowledge and buy from independent entities wherever possible! Thanks for sharing this info, btw. It makes me glad to be able to help the folks that will search for the original post who need the help most.
Thats odd. Might be a hardware issue i.e. a fried sd card. You might try flashing a fresh SD card to see if that works. I don't recall offhand how much memory the Ditto's SD had, as I sold mine a while back but try to get one with the same amount of memory. Let me know how it goes, I'm curious to hear back!
@@iandouglasmusic7486 I’m glad to see your answer, man! I solve a problem. Strange, but it windows 10, flesh is all right, I put it to my old notebook windows 7 and it’s will be ok: flashed this no problem.
btw happened plugging it in and out quickly (assembling a pedalboard). I think during boot up it writes something on the SD card and if you pull power it corrupts the file system or something. Not a good design for a guitar pedal...
@@iandouglasmusic7486 Thanks for answering, I am seeing that when a sd is burned it is normal for it to overheat also the computer does not recognize the sd, I think that is the problem, today I finish flashing a new sd and I let you know how it worked
Hey bro.. i just bought 2nd hand dittox4. I noticed many problem right away,(since the seller told me that the pedal is function perfectly.anyway, sometimes the loop 1 in not recording but loop 2 does.. or the other way around. I have to reboot time to time. My question is ,do you think i will do what you did to x4 or i just need to update the firmware. I need ur honest opinion tnx. All the best.
Hey zef, thanks for watching! If I were you, I would simply update the firmware. The etching process is long and laborious and should only be used as a last-ditch effort. ALSO, make sure your dipswitches (little white switches on the back) are in the proper positions. From what you described, it sounds like you might be in one of the alternate modes. Good luck, friend.
Ian Douglas Music thankyou very.. hope my ditto behave good when updated.. so many complain online about the updated one.. they wish to return in factorty firmware.. thanks again more power.
@@zefMusic No sweat man! I'll answer anything I can. I love being able to help. I'm not exactly sure how to get legacy firmware for a Ditto but from what I've heard, Version 1.93.1 (?) available only for windows (Mac only gets up to .89), deals with some bugs and makes looping much more "seamless" (i.e. for drone music or seamless looping needs). So if you have a way to get firmware 93, I'd recommend trying that before trying to revert to a legacy firmware.
Does anyone here have the loop level problem too? You need to set it at 5 o’clock just to get close to unity..will this solution solve the loop volume problem?
First thing I noticed and disappointed me was the volume limitation ! TC support were useless when I raised the issue . The ditto 2 has unity in the centre so you can go up and down . The ditto 4 unity is basically only obtained with the volume set to 100 % . It’s a very frustrating thing you can only turn your loops down !
Thanks for posting this. I recently got a used unit with 6 month warranty. It appears to work OK, but I was skeptical about the behaviours I was seeing at the start. All lights come on, then the relays click eventually and it behaves like your fixed unit does towards the end of your video. So I guess I don't need to do anything...
It’s only the underside panel that needs to come off . The memory card holder Itself was the issue for mine .. i tried holding the card in with my index finger and it started normally without the lights on permanently . So it was just an issue with the contacts I cleaned it up and popped it back together and it works fine ( at the moment ) . Tc electronics are very quiet about this very obvious design fault that causes so many issues . I prefer my ditto 2 but that has issues with its switches being intermittently problematic . I’ve found the support for these products to be virtually non existant … troubling as they are potentially fantastic but to don’t seem to have much respect for their customers .
@@atlakatl4569 hmmm. You might need a new SD but I can't say for certain. I didn't format mine prior to writing the card, but I wouldn't think it would be wrong to format it since we're reapplying the firmware, essentially. Have you tried adjusting the way the card is seated? Some folks just made minor adjustments to the positioning which got the pedal back.
Hey Christopher! Thats awesome to hear, I'm so glad it worked for you. If someone felt inclined to send some money (which is greatly appreciated!), they could do so through cashapp at $ijdouglas17. Thanks Christopher!
Can you reply "yes midi" or "no midi" to this comment if you were using midi clock in prior to the bricking? I'm trying to compile user data to see if using midi clock is to blame for the bricked units.
Many thanks for making the video, as I have now just saved my Ditto X4 from the scrapheap too! I used the alternate program called Win32DiskImager as also recommended in the thread. sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/ I renamed the .bin file provided by phantom to a .img file, and used this program to image the SD card. A small note, I don't think you need to remove the I/O plate off the back of the unit, I managed to access the card by just removing the base of the casing with the 7 screws.
Thanks for watching Steven! Glad your pedal was granted a second chance at life as well! I believe you’re right about the i/o plate, which would definitely save some time. I think I took it off thinking that was the reason the base wasn’t coming loose on mine. It was, in fact the center torx screw that was covered by Velcro keeping the base from coming off. Good call, I’ll add that to the description. Thanks again.
Great video! Try this first... Try unplugging power; removing the cover and just taking out the sd chip and making sure to reinstall it in its correct position exactly; then locking the holding bracket down gently and plugging it back it to power it up! It fixed mine... there is another video on youtube about the chip moving slightly out of place and causing this problem... ua-cam.com/video/QeU-j9KQj3I/v-deo.html
B Parker thanks for watching, my friend! Could you link that video for others to try? If even 5% of folks just have to move their card back into place, rather than go through this process, it would be worth it! Hope it can help some people. Thanks again!
Hey friend, thanks for watching. I removed the I/O plate out of ignorance because my velcro was covering the last torx screw and the bottom wasn't coming off. It's unnecessary to do so. Sorry to hear it didn't work for you. The original thread that inspired the video is linked in the description and might have any steps that I may have missed. If your card is the issue, you should be able to buy a replacement and use the etcher to write the Ditto firmware onto the new card I believe. I really hope it works for you!
Hey, don't take this the wrong way but having that "background" music dubbed in louder than your voice over makes it hard to follow along with what you are saying. I totally get it, you wrote and recorded that song and are proud of it, and you should be its a nice song. But at that volume it kind of deserves its own video.
This product is just crap. We can all try and work around it as long as we can but it will eventually be bricked permanently. I bought mine brand new and it had this issue after a year of sporadic usage. Luckily it was just a loose SD card. After another year of sporadic usage, it has a similar issue. It completely cuts off in the middle of playing and goes into the all orange lights mode for a few seconds then continues playing.
DUDE? WHAT THE HELL IS AN ETCHER AND WHAT DID YOU DO?? WHEN YOU DID THE COMPUTER PARTS?? YOU DIDN'T EXPLAIN WHAT TO CLICK AND WHAT TO FIND?? I CAN'T JUST BASE IT OFF YOU VIDEO? SORRY IM REALLY STRESSING OVER THIS PEDAL
No worries bud! I didn't know what an etcher was until I made this video, so you're in good company. We're all learning together. The etcher essentially re-writes the pedal's program fresh to the SD card so the pedal doesn't bug out and brick itself again. Once you download the provided disk image from the video description ( mega.nz/file/NMdRiAIY#GtrYevDAjHzPgiYAiwUaj_X9qjVVJ-HF3ZX1MP1mrLo ), you use the etcher to write that image to the SD card. The etcher can be downloaded for free here: www.balena.io/etcher/ You just download the etcher and follow instructions for install on your computer. Then, you take the disk image into the etcher window, and when it asks you to "Select a Drive" to flash the image to, select your Ditto X4 SD card. Best of luck! Let me know if this helps. Fingers crossed for ya!

@@pulsarpont interesting! Glad to hear it worked man!
Thank You this worked perfectly. Bless you
It worked, thank you very VERY much.
Hell yeah! Great to hear Andrea! Thanks for watching!
Today got bricked again for the second time. Had to redo the procedure. Come on TC!!! COME OOOOOOOOOON
Reliability = 0% 😅
btw happened plugging it in and out quickly (assembling a pedalboard). I think during boot up it writes something on the SD card and if you pull power it corrupts the file system or something. Not a good design for a guitar pedal...
Worked for me! Thanks!
When I conect the sd right all the slot is hot af is that normal??
Hey Abraham, that doesn't seem normal to me. This probably goes without saying, but make sure your device is unplugged from power while working on it.
@@iandouglasmusic7486 Thanks for answering, I am seeing that when a sd is burned it is normal for it to overheat also the computer does not recognize the sd, I think that is the problem, today I finish flashing a new sd and I let you know how it worked
Hooray!
Dam that worked like a charm!
Great video! Worked perfectly! Thanks!
Awesome! Glad it worked for you, Mark! Be sure to subscribe! Much more content coming soon.
Thank you so much, it worked perfectly! :)
Hey bro.. i just bought 2nd hand dittox4.
Hi man,, sorry for commenting again.. the latest firmware turned worst for me. Can i ask you if you know how to go back in old firmware? Thankyou
@@iandouglasmusic7486 tnx man..
My Balena failed to flash (I dont know what it means) anyone experienced this?
Do you format the SD card before you flash it?
I flashed it, did not format it, when the flash finalized it said 1 part failed but the flash was complete. However the pedal is still bricked
THANK YOU!! This is great.
Glad to help, Paul! Share the wealth!
Really: thank you so much man!
Thanks, its work ......yeah
Ian, this worked for me! Thanks so much. Do you have a way for those of us who are grateful to send you some money?
Hey Christopher! Thats awesome to hear, I'm so glad it worked for you. If someone felt inclined to send some money (which is greatly appreciated!), they could do so through cashapp at $ijdouglas17. Thanks Christopher!
Thanks mate, it helped!
Can you reply "yes midi" or "no midi" to this comment if you were using midi clock in prior to the bricking? I'm trying to compile user data to see if using midi clock is to blame for the bricked units.
No midi
yes midi
Yes midi, never bricked
Thanks!!!
Many thanks for making the video, as I have now just saved my Ditto X4 from the scrapheap too! I used the alternate program called Win32DiskImager as also recommended in the thread.
sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/
I renamed the .bin file provided by phantom to a .img file, and used this program to image the SD card.
Thanks again.
dude i just broke the card's placeholder. you need to put the warning a few sec before doing it , not after you did ittt
Same but it can be fixed . However it’s a very cheap nasty design .
Ian Douglas Music Done thanks ... I added it and put up another comment with it added ua-cam.com/video/QeU-j9KQj3I/v-deo.html
WHy did you have to remove the input output plate. By the way...this didnt work for me.
I really hope it works for you!
thanks u rock
Glad to be of help, Mōv Raptor! Share the wealth!
Carlo, I'm afraid you're right. TC released a bunk product and refuses to assume responsibility for their mistake. Super bummer.
@@iandouglasmusic7486 I have an Aeros looper now. They're not perfect but at least they work with consumers to address issues. 9/10 for me overall.
Agreed it’s a faulty product TC have been abismal with support over these units . By rights they should have been withdrawn and customers refunded .
Never mind I see it.
Might not be necessary. Just removed the card, put contact spray and voilà.

The etcher can be downloaded for free here: www.balena.io/etcher/
You just download the etcher and follow instructions for install on your computer. Then, you take the disk image into the etcher window, and when it asks you to "Select a Drive" to flash the image to, select your Ditto X4 SD card. Best of luck! Let me know if this helps. Fingers crossed for ya!
Unbelievable I hardly use the looper an 1 day it’s does! If I go through all these steps I’m selling it immediately! An TC you can forget trying to sell me a new model I don’t care how good it is don’t want to hear anything about it!!!!!
TC Electronic have the worst customer/tech support system of any company on earth.
turn down that fucking music!
Rage quit this video, because of the intrusive and annoying background “music”.
Might not be necessary. Just removed the card, put contact spray and voilà.
Same here! But I flashed the card first, and when that didn't work I used contact cleaner (do this first). Very happy. Thanks!
