ABC model of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

- The ABC model of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) explains why you think the things you think, why you feel the way you feel, and why you do the things you do. When we learn to use the ABC model, we can begin to intervene and take control of our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
CBT is an approach to psychotherapy where an individual learns to recognize their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and how they all relate to one another. The ABC model is at the core of the CBT theory.
This video gives an overview of how to use the ABC model while providing examples.

Utilizing the ABC model helps people with anxiety well, I find. I'm a CBT practitioner and often their triggers send them reeling. Helping them draw the connection between beliefs, actions, and consequences helps them create an action plan when confronted with a trigger versus going over the ledge.
That type of therapy can definitely help you change and become a better person it will also help you redeem yourself for sure it’s for people when they don’t behave well or if they got something wrong with them this is the perfect place to help you change and become a better person!
I appreciate his direct and not verbose in explaining this concept.
Thanks Woody. I'm an Outreach Worker and love Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I'm also going to school right now, taking the Counselling Program at VCC, (Vancouver Community College). I'm doing a presentation on CBT on Wednesday night in class and I'm really nervous. I watched your video on UA-cam and I love the super simple ABC model of explaining CBT. I found some really good handouts and worksheets on-line, and I think that those and using your grocery store example to explain CBT will get me through. Great job. :)
Thanks Wendy, I'm glad the video was able to calm your nerves a bit!
Which site do I access handouts & worksheets? Thank you.
The link for worksheets related to CBT activites are phenomenal. Thank you!

Really great video Woody Schuldt, thanks for sharing!
Thanks Paul, I appreciate your support!
My pleasure!
Thank you for sharing this video as a counsellor i do use it for my clients .This ABC works like wonder when they realise where to keep a check on their thoughts but along with CBT in extreme cases medicine and therapy combo work well. Thanks again for sharing it.
As someone suffering from extreme anxiety, the ABC model has really help me draw back my anxious beliefs to their source, taking away a lot of their power.
Good model. Effective is how after the event, it starts with a person's core beliefs, here-and-now thoughts (then feelings & behavior.) Positive thought is powerful. "The reality of man is his thought, not his material body. The thought force and the
animal force are partners." ~ Baha'i Faith
Thanks again for an excellent video. Keep up the good work.
Great Video. I am working with Mental Health Illness population. I am going to use the ABC model of CBT with my participants. Thank you.

I often come into the [issue] of "good times"...somehow not just coming in contact w/quantity of people, but in conflict with the existential dilemma of mercy for some1 who acts different...I know it could as usual just be bio. chem., yet I still prefer a slower more broad explanation.
Very informative and timely.
Thank you!
Muito bom sucesso parabéns sempre muito bom
I know this one its REBT ( Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy !!! I learned about this one in counseling my old old counselor taught me this one and I have a book about REBT !!
Happy to hear this is helping to support your therapy!
Great video. May I use it in my Trauma Curriculum?
If I am not mistaken, the ABC model is taken from Albert Ellis om Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy, Where CBT talks about how our behavior affects our thoughts and how we feel, or how our how we feel can affect how we behave and our thoughts, and how our thoughts can affect how we feel and behave. REBT from Albert Ellis gets confused with Arron Beck and visa versa in terms of theories and interventions. Both were develope around the same time, but Ellis and Beck were unaware of each others cognitive behavioral therapy. But do not take my word for it, look it up. Just food for thought, plus I wanted to mention it because this mistake of confusion is very common.
There's also DBT dialect behavioral therapy too.
Thank you for this video...I am trying to learn effective CBT for my group's therapy. I am an addiction counselor intern. I am running groups 5 days a week. I need help with CBT. I have subscribed to your channel but if I ever needed to ask a quesiton where do I do this?
SECTION 5: TESTICLE CUFF
Neat video, I think that you could reach a wider audience with better audio control. You sound as if you are in a hallway. Get that mic all up close to your face.
Thank you paul!
Nice ! Thanks.
Adding an English subtitles would be great and benefits for people who isn't a non-english speaker. (My listening isn't that good 😌)
Thank you for the feedback!
i have a friend who is suffering fom depression from some 6 months... and thinks negative all the time... i am getting some info for the cbt... but cannot figure out how to perform it at the first place. 🤷♀️😞
I’m really wondering what Jordan Peterson think about the abc model by Albert Ellis?
I do not recommend dealing with the EF English after they set out to follow them and I found many people complaining about them and their program failed, this is my experience with them.
Wouldn't "belief" simply be caused by your self-conscious and ideology of standards? Sometimes the things we think or say is just a construct of the context of the given situation.
No, I learned beliefs aren't just what we think but what others tell us.
Like: a person invalidating a belief just because we answer from our viewpoint...or viewpoints...they think because we might have started the conversation they know every fact and detail but they don't.
I wanted to watch this but both the closed caption is not unavailable and the transcript is not available. What about people who are hearing impaired, shouldn't they be able to watch and gain insight?
I understand this a quick video that explains the ABC but what if we ask the question "Do I have evidence for that" and you conclude that you do?
Do you, therefore, think of that negative thought differently or how do you approach that?
The question to self is a good start but elaborate if you could with the same example in the video but one step further?
You'd ask, "what evidence is there against this?" Is it a fact or just my opinion, or someone else's opinion, or just the way I'm thinking about it, or how do I know it'll always be this way?" Basically, question the evidence and don't take every thought you have as a truth.
There is never any evidence for a should. Shoulds do not exist anywhere in the Universe. If you want more explanation on this, let me know.
thankyou soo much... you are really kind and yeah now helpfull too.
I am suffering from social anxiety i dont know how to cope with it.. i wanna improve my self plzz is there any link where i can learn CBT online
Meher Angaiz Yeah look it up on Wikipedia man it really helps out.

Ellen Hendriksen's "how to be yourself" book she goes through the steps of self CBT for social anxiety
Can CBT be performed by any medical practioner?
Most medical practitioners, such as a general practitioner, wouldn't be trained in performing CBT. However, they should be able to refer you to a provider.
Belief or feelings are not measurable, how can we work with them? I would prefer the aba bt, ABC, antecedent behavior consequence.
No subtitles:(
👍
Good content with very bad sound quality. It undermines what you are trying to do here.
Thank you for the feedback!
how do i stop being perssimistic
You recommend meditation but i notice there are a lot of Meditations and a lot of these are linked with eastern Religions. It is a bit too open ended to just say meditate, don’t you think? Why not say 1. Pray for that person’s good fortune or 2. Do something good for someone else in response to your negative feelings. Do you consider that helping others help us?
Only a Liberal would need this 😅😅😅😅
Terrible audio.
