This is the same video that was uploaded to UA-cam by My American Nostalgia, but with cleaned up audio.
I was not born and raised in Detroit but I lived and worked in the Detroit area for 12 years of the Coleman Young era. I have also lived and worked in other cities. Detroit needed a "uniter" but Coleman Young said and did things that further divided people. I also observed that most Detroiters have never lived anywhere else, so they haven't experienced how much better life is elsewhere.
Thank you for posting this video. Powerful, thought provoking, great conversation that, in my opinion, EVERY major metropolis can have.

Coleman was his own worst enemy. He'd open up his mouth and would start a fire storm no pun intended.

Depressing. If I had to witness all that, I would be drinking too. They are correct that DC had more violent crimes per capital during that time but we are not an industrial town like towns in SE Michigan. Detroit is a complex but great city and is starting to become great again despite all of the problems it has encountered
The Mayor would have never agreed to doing an interview with PRIMETIME if he knew they would have slammed Detroit.
Boy, what a piece of crap he turned out to b. He made Kwame Kilpatrick look like Cub Scout. He didn't start the demise of Detroit he just put the nail's in the coffin.
When blacks and whites from the south moved to Detroit in the '20's, that's when all of the racism shit started. The tensions of the south were brought to Detroit, however, it was typically the white southerners that initiated many of the conflicts during the early days. They (white southerners) had the attitude that they were above everyone else, even above the white northerners who created the industry in the city. The white southerners were the ones who would start shit in the factories with blacks they worked next to and when the white southerners got into the police force it got worse.

Bob Berg died in 2019. He was Coleman's man when it came to defending Coleman and difficult questions.
Another way to describe Bob Berg --- "a weasel and a prick who cleverly alluded questions and was a bomb-thrower in his own right." No wonder Coleman liked him so much!
Berg was no asset to the city of Detroit or the state of Michigan at all. He was an a$$hole.
The inside joke of Detroit was that Detroit is so grimy you get killed just for making eye contact .
Coleman Young was the best Mayor for the people of Detroit. Coleman Young wasn’t anyone puppet. People try to character assainate him.

Coleman Young hasn’t been mayor since 94.
Coleman Young acolplished more than any other mayor of Detroit.
If we blame any mayor it was Cavnaugh. Dennis Archer was smart but he was pretty much a do nothing mayor.
Why did people move out in droves while he was mayor? Why did crime skyrocket?
The crime skyrocket because the Jobs left. People need money to live on. The mayor doesn’t control people’s actions.
Jobs left because of high taxes and high crime. His policies didn't entice them to come back. He also kept many suburbanites from visiting and spending money in the city.
How hammered is he?
Yeah the mayor was great. He didn't play rip too Mayor Young and Bill Bonds. I grew up with this. Lol
We Love You Mayor Coleman Young. Not one politician challenged the media like he did and he didn't hold back how he felt.

@marliseeisrael3017 Loved him for WHAT? The city degraded every year he was in office. He gave bitchy interviews to the media to cover up his lack of doing ANYTHING to help the city. He was a lazy, hateful, bitter man.
As a white person I think other white people didn't like him because he spoke his mind and more times than not what Mayor Young said was very true! Mayor Young had the guts to speak his mind and I think it was very honorable how fought for his city and the residents of his city. White people hearing Mayor Young speak his mind got passed off and i think they got passed off cuz they new the Mayor was correct in what he was saying. People forget that Mayor Young did a lot of good things for the city but for whatever reason he doesn't get the credit he deserves. R.I.P. Mayor Young!

I was Extremely fortunate growing up in DETROIT DURING COLEMANS REIGN....I EVEN MET HIM IN HOUSTON ,TX IN 1987. EVEN THOUGH MY MOM AND DAD WASNT MARRIED...THEY DID THE BEST THEY Could with the resources they had. Detroit and the metropolitan area is a POCKET CITY. SOME NEIGHBORHOODS ARE BEAUTIFUL....then two blocks over you got blight. But Detroit has OR HAD A HOOD CODE Less fortunate neighborhoods kept theyre 🐂 💩 on their OWN STREETS..BUT....BETWEEN 6 AND 7 MILE AND LIVERNOIS IS GORGEOUS.....YOU GO 2 MINUTES SOUTH OF 6 MILE TO PURITAN IT LOOKS LIKE VIETNAM. IN MY TIME 1989-1997.

No one in big business wanted to deal with Coleman, he wasn't a good mayor, he actually drove existing and potential business away from the city. If any business came to Michigan it went to Oakland County.

I'll say this much. Coleman was doomed from Day one because he was a light bright who took no shit from anyone. But I can make it be clear that he did not have that "Yess-um Boss" attitude. I'm Sorry, That silver and black haired dude they interviewed would look down on any person of color even if it was Harry Muthafukkin Belafonte. Coleman was of mixed heritage himself so he knew how people from both sides keep the shit pot stirring. And I am clear from this channel!!!!!! The Midwest is not about Dog Shit!!
