Few things I would like to add here. You spoke about 1989 and 1991 assembly elections. I can strongly say that in the 1991 election DMK would have lost for sure. The pointers are
1. It was an Unified ADMK. Within two months of 1989 assembly election victory, DMK had a thrashing in Marungapuri and Madurai East. The winner of Madurai East Mr. S. R. Radha went onto become the oppositon leader after the events happened against Ms. Jayalalitha on the floor of the house.
2. DMK was routed in 1989 general election. If my memory is right, only DMK had a ministerial berth through back door courtesy of Mr. Maran who was a Rajya Sabha MP.
3. Mr. Karunanidhi's government had a very bad name right from the early days when Mr. Arcot Veerasami was dropped from the government because of Rice scam. Mr. Karunanidhi's exhobirant birthday celebrations. His salary was Rs. 10000 during that time. But his birthday cake was Rs. 12000. Following that cheap liquor shops. Women had tough time walking in the nights alone even to go to the grocery. Law and order issue which ultimately proved to be the final coffin for that government. Padmanabah's assassination is still the prime example. Attack on Ms. Jayalalitha again while she was coming back in her car. She narrowly escaped. Mr. Rajiv Gandhi came down immediately to see her.
With so many hard facts, am not sure how you came to the judgement that DMK would have won in the 1991 election. Only thing possible would have been if not for Mr. Rajiv Gandhi's assassination, they would have been in double figures in the assembly.
