I actually saw this episode first (youtube algorithms are weird), and I was so enchanted I went back and have binged the whole series (except for the livestream) in one day. This is absolutely amazing content, and you make it look so easy (myself, being very much not a rocket scientist, struggle to get to the Mun and back). As an idea for the far future, perhaps a colony ship that is JUST for refugees? Like when the new colony is established, see how many people you can fit onto one ship safely when you don't have to worry about miners and surveyors and colony infrastructure? Just a thought, really enjoying this, definitely subscribing for more!
I can't help visualizing that Katrina was playing Magic Carpet Ride on full blast on the Clarke's PA systems the entire time while you were explaining the ship's various components and their purposes.

Reminded me of the feeling I got watching the setup to the Jupiter mission in Planetes anime. Further but smaller. The ship in that anime was fusion too, they called it the Von Braun.
I watched almost 4 seasons from the expanse The thing I like the most in it is the fusion technology, realistic demonstration of orbital mechanics, spaceflight and even combat, no FTL, only fusion I am big fan of fusion technologies, I read a lot about it, even when I am not a rocket scientist or anything like that With the things I read I tried to make a rocket concept with three of those thermal jet engines used in the Condor in KSP with Magnetized Target Fusion Reactors(using LH2 or Liquid CO2, idk what other fuels can be used for this kind of rocket), but well with little success, because I am not a rocket scientist, just a fan of spaceflight. But I tried it at least Now I feel myself a bit smarter.
4 * 10⁹ Kerbal/82 * 30 minutes (82 as you could theoretically launch two shuttles). That would take an equiv. of 2784 years (our time scale) to evacuate everyone. Also you have to implement a colony ship every 1/2 hour.
Looking at the mission time when you go over the components of the Clarke. How long one second is taking really makes me admire your "endurance". Love your series and the plans you have sound awesome!
For the next gen starship should use antimatter plasma core reactor (or positron if not enough tech) for power and the Unobtusstard engine (5/12unobtanium, 7/12 busstard engine) this beast uses sH2 and has twice the Isp as OPdalus!

A question: does realplume work with the inertial confinement fusion drive? Because the little blue stream going out of that huge bell seems sad. Realplume makes space rocket exhaust look hot.
Weird little off topic thing I got here: I just started playing a game called elite dangerous (the 300 billion star system, 1:1 milky way model one), and (after a bit of grinding) decided to go visit Betelgeuse. To put it simply, I was not prepared for the sheer SIZE of that plasma puff. The thing has a radius around 2,000 light seconds and a corona of another 500 light seconds in game. (earth is around 8 light minutes or 480 light seconds from the sun to give you perspective). Then I see you’ve made a interstellar mission and go to watch it, see archangel, and get a crazy idea. Could it be possible to mod a (habitable) Betelgeuse system into the game? (Aside from the obvious problems with this, like the flare point and whatnot which is already there with archangel). Could you try and ask gameslinx or someone if its feasible? Just an idea.
One time my Eve lander got krakened out and some of it's debris went up to 4% of the speed of light. Edit: For those curious, i did it by accidentally loading a quicksave where the parachutes were already open

You say that your circular heatshield is to protect from the neutron radiation from the engine but you're using Deuterium+Helium3 as your fusion fuel. That is the only fuel combo that does NOT produce neutrons during fusion (which is why it is such an attractive choice). If you were to use a neutron shield (and distance) like you do on the Clark it would be better to use Deuterium+Tritium for your fusion. It's easier, cheaper and gives you a bigger kick. That's just a note for the realism side of things.

I remember a beardy a long time ago bashing NASA for trying to build moon bases... I wonder how he would react to the key role artemis played in building the Clarke these days :P.
Aaron He I actually bashed them for the gateway station when it was just going to be used as a staging point for mars missions. As a staging point for lunar landings and supporting a lunar base as outlined in the new Artemis program, I’m actually all for it. But before the Artemis program the gateway had no purpose at all.

ProdZiggy unfortunately no, the licences the mod developers use prevent me from redistributing them. I would make a CKAN modpack but most of the mods aren’t on there, you’ll just have to find them yourself.

The Expanse really inspired me in ksp too. I finally downloaded a ton of mods and I'm starting from unmanned and trying to build a interstellar empire

Did you bring any comm sats to set up a relay network when you get there, or can you build them on the Clarke?

I find if you uninstall and reinstall Kerbal Engineer, the line for your burn will go back to its normal yellow... Hope this helps ✌️
