FEP is all about restless human beings in permanent search of meaning of individual's life. Not human race's, but each person's life. It shows how every single human being stumbles in search of greater or simpler life story. Because it is important to us. We do not know where we came from, but crave to know which is the right path for every each one of us.
Five Easy Pieces (1970) is one of the films that inspired my own future film called "Rags & Rafels" the second character's last name being a reference to Bob Rafelson himself, the film covers similar themes of emotional alienation, loneliness and self destruction, another major influence was Easy Rider (1969)
The ending is perfect: Bobby getting in the truck, as a passenger (no jacket), headed for Alaska. Rayette abandoned at the service station, but not yet knowing her fate.
Such a great film that most people have never seen. RIP Bob.

I bought this for my Father when I was about 20, not really understanding why.
Watching it with him I realised he understood why.
I don't understand why either, but for some reason you've said it in a way that helped make me understand why.

Great movie especially the final scenes ‘auspicious beginnings know what I mean?’
