    This video was so helpful. Thank you!! (I am dyslexic and my circular saw has NO blade lock and I have been trying to get the blade off in the opposite direction for weeks. I assumed I was an idiot and could not find the blade lock and that was the problem. I watched your video for less than two minutes and it solved my problem. Thank you!!)

    I've been looking for this information for weeks. Thanks for the tutorial! I got this tool from my grandpa and I'm learning how to use it properly. You save me a lot of money because I thought it was broken or there was a piece missing and wanted to buy a new one hahaha.

      @@FixItYourself Yeah I know about your method that's how I first learned it's either my family had a Craftsman or Black & Decker for skill none had a blade lock only the higher end models did from skill the worm drive think Black & Decker had one I know Milwaukee had one I first learned to jam a piece of wood or a screwdriver to keep the blade from moving then the last couple years I learned about an impact driver to loosen it with a 1/2 socket adapter to tightness you still got to use a the included wrench cuz you could strip the bolt out with the torque unless you have a 3-speed as long as you have a good control over your finger and it's right right as it makes the impact you stop immediately it'll be fine I've done that a bunch of times having stripped out my bolts but mainly I recommend just use it to loosen the bolt

    Thank you! My 5150 is about 25 years old (bought new). I've used it so sporadically that I never needed to change the blade until now. Your video is a big help. How could anyone design a tool with a rotating blade and not think to include a blade lock mechanism? I guess they thought it would save them a little money. Also, that dinky wrench they included is of no help at all.

    This is just like my dad's old Craftsman Sawmill circular saw. I just use a scrap of 2x4 to press the blade on to loosen and tighten the bolt. Great video!

    Thanks very much! I just pulled a Skilsaw Model 534 6-1/2” saw out of the garage where it has been sitting for over 40 years. Dad was going to change the power cord but never got around to it so I installed a replacement cord and a Diablo framing blade from Home Depot and hopefully it will work for many years to come.

    Broke my old 5150 out and blad needed changing. Could not recall how I secured the blade. Your video reminded me I used to sink the blade into a pick or solid scrap wood, then untighten, remove and replace. To tighten new blade I just sat it on the slot on the scrap wood and tightened the bolt. For me that was easier than juggling a screw driver and the blade cover all at once. The cutting part of blade stated away from my hands except for seating it. I'm a woman with small hands so I have to be creative.

    I don't know if you noticed but you can use an impact driver to loosen the bolt I have a skilsaw 5485 similar this just better RPM that's it and made under the bosch unbrella when they owned this brand. You. Need a 1/2 socket with hex adapter or regular hex to half-inch socket and it works for me I use my Ridgid and it works if you don't have an impact driver I'll make a video I show how to do it

    Slide the guard back and rest the blade on a piece of wood, the teeth will hold it and with other hand use a wrench

  • @Fred_the_Head
    @Fred_the_Head 13 днів тому +1

    I am concerned that jamming a screwdriver into the teeth could damage the teeth. I use the jaws of a pair of Vice Grips to grab the blade about 5/8” to 3/4” from the teeth.

    • @FixItYourself
      @FixItYourself  13 днів тому +1

      Whatever works for you is fine. Sometimes I just grab the blade with a heavy duty rag and hold it like that.
      I would be worried about warping the blade when grabbing it with vise grips.

    Nice tutorial, thanks! I have a 25-year old Skilsaw 5150 that has been doing fine all along. I changed the blade recently. No problem with operation. Suddenly, in the middle of a cut, the blade appeared to reverse direction. Any idea on how or why that happened? As far as I know, there is no reverse switch.

    The fools who design these things need to listen to feedback instead of thinking they know it all. They never think about the end user.

    Designer #2: Who cares?
