A thing I hate about colorism, is that it's often used as another method for palm-colored people to define what being black is. It's infuriating.

@@freddogrosso9835 She was voice acted by Issa Rae! I noticed that we are more likely to see dark skinned Black women and girls in animated series than in live action series. I'm assuming it's because a lot of the animators might not be Black and don't know how to draw Black folks with various skin tones without still being able to translate visually that they are Black.

Im greatful for this channel. Im only half way through rn but from my vantage point (late twenties, black woman), colorism seems to be worsening in the media and in day to day life. We really do need more folks like you sounding the alarm. When we do it, we are jealous or WE get accused of colorism as if it works the other way around. Colorism is prejudice against dark skin people. If you've experienced harrassment from being light skin, you're story valid and deserves to be heard....but its not fuckinh colorism. The erasure is astounding. Please keep it up Jawn
It does seem like it’s getting worse! I tell my students all the time about the type of shoes I could watch when I was young but today’s kids are on that Darr Mahn stuff. Really bad production value. Low quality writing. Online only I think. Tubi style after school specials.

Anyone remember the brief period of time where The Walking Dead tried really hard to pioneer having a strong darkskin woman as a main character and even then she gets a lot of her person removed compared to the comics
Oh Michone in the comics is one of the strongest characters ever written in that medium, imo. Same with Tyrese, who was such an important and nuanced character versus what we got on TV. Michone was still great on TV but they definitely "gave her less."
Absolutely. She is still great in the show but definitely toned up. It's crazy how good some parts of the TWD comics are, and then you also get... the other parts of the TWD comics.
@@electricVGC oh for sure, there were a ton of halfbaked characters and plots, I gave up around issue 116 but there was a lot of weak writing leading up. It's been over a decade since I revisited anything from the franchise. Might have to dust off the old graphic novels. I was addicted the first 60-80 issues lol

Thank you so much for making this video. It’s nice to have more Black men speaking with us about these issues. Cuz trust we get ignored, called bitter, and talked over. I am always harping on the rampant colorism in media and it makes it so hard to enjoy things. It is so rare to see Black women of my skin tone, mind you, I am not even on the deepest end of the spectrum. Especially in roles that are not the typical low-effort, stereotypical characters.
I highly encourage y’all to check out shows like: Chewing Gum and Black Lady Sketch Show (absolutely amazing. Black women in every kind of role).
I love horror and I love that Jordan Peele has made two movies with deeper skin Black women as main characters, who are whole people. Fully fleshed out and have really wonderful characterization.
I’m a pretty big gamer, so this is always a really painful sore spot for me, cuz deeper skin Black woman as main characters in a video game is basically non-existent. However, I love what Sam Lake did with Alan Wake 2 and getting to play as the other protagonist Saga. She has such an amazing story and it’s the first time I’ve played a video game with a Black woman (she’s Bi-racial, but whatever) as a playable protagonist, with her own story, and fully fleshed out character. Not via character customization.
Ok I am gonna stop here cuz I can talk forever about this very specific topic.
I grew up on upn (and pbs,) basically the only two stations that came in clear on my antenna tv in my room. I didn't grow up around many black people but through that lens, I think it positively influenced my world view. I still revisit the old UPN shows on Dabl for nostalgia. I never paid attention to their skintones or facial features, just thought the shows were entertaining. I also didn't really understand how America worked. And I'm also kinda autistic and introverted and just an overall latchkey kid.
I haven't put too much thought into, but you are right about the reduction of "black media" in this streaming era on TV. Thanks for the education on colorism, it's a topic that matters. I see it a lot more in present media than I did as a youngin - sports especially is when I first started to truly notice it.
Same! I was also a latchkey kid and am still to this day a little autistic and a lot adhd. Those shows have me something to dream about. They taught me my low quality life wasn’t the end for me and gave me something to work toward. I don’t see anything like that available for kids today. They all want to be TikTok stars and I can’t get them to realize that all the work they put into their dances to give away online are just being stolen by a certain type of “influencer” who is already rich, already has a following and is pale as the driven snow.

Appreciate your insight and depth on this topic bro cause i talk about a lot of these points with friends. Even as a light skinned man whos had relationships with unambiguous black women, i didnt realize i never really saw my type of romantic dynamic until, ironically, seeing american fiction. At the end of the day im rooting for everyone black but it was cool to be an adult and go "damn they look like us".

I agree w/most of what you're saying, but the family on "Everybody Hates Chris" weren't broke. They were middle class, owned a brownstone, in NY and had tenants. The mother only worked occasionally. They weren't rich, but they weren't any type of broke. For, "The Harder They Fall", IRL Stagecoach Mary was a dark skinned woman, but like you said, was played by a mixed woman. That's done a lot in Hollywood, ie., Zoe Saldana playing Nina Simone literally, in blackface.
yes!!! To add to your take on "Harder They Fall", Cuffee would have been more true to life if she was named Stagecoach. As it is said that Stagecoach Mary was a gun using, dark skinned, masc woman with a wifey in a nunnery. That would have left in some nice tongue-n-cheek jokes and comments, and represented a portion of the community on the "hero" side

@JawnLouis Not gonna lie, they do treat certain biracials like shit ie. Rashida Jones always plays the "other" girl. The woman who is NEVER chosen by the white guy she is initially dating. Even if she is perfect, he wants the messy white girl or the alternative white girl like in Parks and Rec. I wouldn't want that role either. O figure that's why Maya Rudolf's love interests tend to be off screen when she's paired with a white man like in Bridesmaids.
