So something important to share about this experience: Recorded footage doesn't do it justice. It's like taking a photo of something amazing like the Grand Canyon vs actually being there. With recorded footage and photos, you lose out on so much depth. Worlds appear flattened. With the headset on, this was not the case at all.
Dang, kinda want to try this out! My favorite place to go would probably be the Forest Temple, the music is pretty calming to me, although seeing it in VR may change that feeling into spooky.

Quicksmith Genius I have a idiom I made for that. It’s called “taking off the headset.” It means to return to reality after being in some other paradise world. Whether that’s a LARP camp, or a video game, or just some form of escape, you eventually have to take off the headset and return to reality. Taking off the headset doesn’t diminish any of those experiences you just had, but it simply says that they are over. You experience taking off the headset usually whenever you return from a camping trip, or any trip, for that matter. Hopefully it makes sense enough for you to use it and pass it around.
@@Solrex_the_Sun_King Love that. That's how I would feel after an acid trip. It was always so beautiful and you'd have plenty of wonderful ideas for the happiness of the world. But as it's effects wear off, you start realizing the next day you have to go work, make money, pay your bills, and just get back to the droning of a work life. I always hated "removing the headset" coming from an lsd trip lmao
This video made me feel really good for some reason. Whenever you said that the experience reminded you of being a child, being free from any responsabilities, just being free to sightsee and enjoy the world for what it is without being forced to do anything, I felt nostalgia. Amazing work, SwankyBox!
This was AMAZING, and for the first time in awhile actually made me excited for the future of VR because I have hope that some of our favorite games (like OoT) could actually be reworked for VR so it feels natural (rather than a hackjob, the game being built ground up for VR). Also you connecting the experience to feeling like a kid again was surreal, I have so many ancient memories of playing the game when I was like 7 and going back through VR feels like a timewarp. Basically, I'm shook (in a good way!)

I want to say it could be possible, but just not entirely sure how. I'm playing Half Life VR for the first time on Oculus Quest, and it's haunting to me. It may be an older game but dang it's freaky in VR. Monsters coming for me, never sure what's behind you, etc.
@@TayoEXE A roommate had a horror VR game. I didn't like it because the zombies come from everywhere! A normal adventure like Zelda would be really fun though.
Of all the Zelda games that have potential for Motion Control, I'd say it would be Breath of the Wild. It's possible to do something like this actually. Half life got a Quest VR update from modders, and I've been playing with motion controls in 6DoF. They managed to get the Oculus SDK working with the Android version of the game.
Namii chan -I remember having to have my dad do the shadow temple for me when I was little and hiding behind his chair when he fought the Boss - terrifying lol lil me was a pussy looking back at that precious moment now haha not much has change still a pussy but no dad to hide behind anymore rip😑
I feel like I’d have a similar reaction coming out that I do when I finish watching an old black and white movie. “Wow! Reality is so high definition!”
I really wanna do something like this, even if it ain't Ocarina of Time, but I can't really afford a headset This is on my bucket list before I die for sure.
This video makes me want to tear up a bit, not because how much nostalgias the game brings, but it restores the feeling of being a carefree child that run around in the wild. It's an idyllic feel I rarely experience as an urban kid.
This sounds like...just as you stated...an experience. I'm sure it was an adjustment by the looks of it but if you can get past forcing an older game into a VR platform (especially with controls and odd camera movement) I could only image how amazing it must've been to capture the precious moments of this title that personally.
Furthermore the fact that you were almost trapped in the world of Ocarina of Time, needing to find a place to sleep, working out on Death Mountain, etc....it just seems magical
@@hylianlad I think that's the feeling SAO originally tried to go for. Imagine the immersion, isolation, and wonder of being trapped in a virtual world for 2 years.
I did this before. Back in the good ol' year of 2000 I put my TV, N64, and a beanbag in my closet and I locked myself away for 24 hours with headphones and a box over the TV that wrapped around my head so all I could see and hear was the majestic world of Ocarina of Time. Started playing at night and when I finally emerged from my contraption and looked out a window, it was already nighttime of the next day. Hey... it was the closest to full immersion I could get back then
Just imagine how hard it is to make a game from the Nintendo 64 to computer, and then putting the game into a VR headset from the computer. That is crazy.
Of course that would be a haunting experience, any game with old graphics would be a haunting experience. Don’t even start with the Golden Skulltula....
Exactly. That's how I got motion sickness - by playing a game in *ego perspective* - Unreal 1, after all these years when Playstation 3 was out and I had played with graphics like Crysis.
I'd pick Theif II, but yeah, that would be intense. Possibly too intense. Not sure how I would deal with seeing a random Mechanist bot spot you and start attacking.
They remade this game in 3d, I know for a fact that can run in vr smoothly. Its phenomenal beyond belief how well playing 3rd person games works in VR. Unbelievably good.
imagine if nintendo made a official vr headset like valve with similar capabilities of switch and we got an official updated visual of oot through twighlight princess. next you gotta try the witcher 3 tho
Twilight princess music at the end made me think what would be for me playing the zelda game of my childhood in vr. It wold defeinitely be an experience.
I'm not a huge fan of VR, I've just never really understood the hype, but this video was actually really cool and makes me think that a full-on Zelda VR game would be one of the most magical things in the history of things! Also I like how you did "normal" things ... like just chillin' on the roof after a rough day exploring a cavern of explosive dinosaurs, which was probably as exhausting as it sounds IRL. And respect for keeping the headset on the whole time, that must be horrible on the eyes when, after spending so long in Hyrule, suddenly the pseudo-3D turns into REAL 3D. D:
Man, the that idea of playing your favorite game as a kid vs now is really felt. I have memories of playing twilight princess in my room a decade ago vs now and the feeling definitely isn’t the same. That’s not for the worse though, because remembering those times is what makes the game so incredibly special to me.
This game is so wonderful, everyone has their cozy little secret hiding spots. sequel too. You just wanna... live there. This VR setup looks pretty unsuited for the game and could be made better
I spent a lot of time adventuring around our farm & the woods pretending it was Hyrule...then 1 special day while climbing around the huge barn...I find a real, full-length SWORD hidden on the rafters...man oh man...I can't really convey the pure joy & wonder I felt at that moment...no more wielding Deku sticks for me, I had a freakin' sword now! Eventually I was caught by my grandpa with it, he was pretty amused, but he allowed me to keep it as long as I promised to always be careful with it. There was nothing like making a campfire in the woods, my sword stuck in the dirt in case any coyotes came around. Those years have passed on...but somewhere on that farm, it's still hidden, waiting for the next adventurous kid daring enough to find it.
Playing through a game in VR? Sounds like an awesome and familiar idea. By the way, I finished my set up guide for Luigi's Mansion VR if you are still interested in that.
This really is haunting, N64 games in VR look like after birth mixed with sludge. I mean props to you for a 24 hr game sesh in vr but really...what was gained

Awesome job on this man. I was expecting this to be much cornier.. you proved me wrong. Actually looks beautiful. I hope someday someone can improve the FOV and let people enjoy their childhood gaming environments some more. Great idea!
I love this kind of experience. I started playing The Talos Principle and making puzzles but I saw a nice beach area and I just couldn't resist sitting down and putting my hand on the sand. It feels good even though it's fake.
have you modified fov settings somehow? I think everything looks pretty "zoomed" with the defaults. detailed explanations on how to set this up would be great!
I'm calling for a full week of this. I think it could be done with regular sleep schedule where after every 16 or so hours you sleep 8 hours or so and complete the game. I'm sure it can be done a lot quicker than that though.
I know this is an old video but I had a spot in zelda that I claimed as my home as a child as well. It felt safe and somehow removed from all the bad things in hyrule. At the back of the lonlon ranch in the little door with the cows inside where you move the boxes to crawl for the heart piece was it. I would pull the box in behind me and it was like my little haven. ALSO! when fighting king dodongo if you're wearing the hylian shield just crouch and he rolls right over you with no damage!
Im cry over this video, I just got an oculus go and I have the potential to do what you did and it's almost bringing me to tears that such a nostalgic thing is in my reach, something I have thought about since childhood.
hearing the excitement in your voice throughout the video is glorious, these are the kind of things we could only dream about as children, yet technology brings it closer and closer each day. Your video makes me want to rush out and buy a vr headset, despite knowing i am very prone to motion sickness and would not have a similar experience, the idea of just being able to live in a fantasy world, even if only for a few minutes, sounds amazing. Added onto that. i could not help but be afraid when you were on death mountains highest peak for a workout. i would have freaked out due to the hieght (heck, i had to look away from the video just to not panic.)
this actually made me cry at the end knowing it's over and he had to take the vr off knowing how sweet and nostalgic the game is. it made me so happy seeing him be able to just be a kid and have fun without a care in the world and seeing it end to go back to an adult life is saddening
Trueblade -I mean as a child and the game being new it was terrifying without VR ( rip shadow temple that shit was scary) if the graphics were better and you actually felt like you are in the game they would have to give it a higher rating to keep kids from playing it and having nightmares and stuff
You’re a pioneer my friend. I go into watching this video thinking, this sounds stressful I don’t think he can trudge through. You did! Your perseverance in this task is uniquely inspiring. Just think in. 20+ years you’ll be visiting again in your haptic suit and be able to nap within Korkri village in peace.
This has so much potential , makes me want an MM/OOT remake for VR like an actual game instead of the toyish things they have that they call games. When he was refering to the area you first meet Zelda in as young link, my first thought was "do the Easter eggs with the windows" but he didn't sadly. (Both the bomb and the secret portraits were great imho) I feel like the shadow temple, the sand temple the fire temple and the well would've been a major pain though lol the redeads would be hella scary in VR especially if they were made with modern graphics , I think part of why this runs so nicely in VR is because of the polygons they tend to work well with current VR systems.
So something important to share about this experience: Recorded footage doesn't do it justice. It's like taking a photo of something amazing like the Grand Canyon vs actually being there. I feel like this has a lot of potential for improvement and Kaze could be the one to do it. Imagine he gets it fixed to the point of motion control
Ninty doesn't like that
@luichinplaystation610 oh, I call it that to!
"And honestly, I can think of no complete world that immediately grabbed my attention the way that Ocarina of Time did." -SwankyBox
Yup.
When I was a little kid I legit was scared of the stalchildren
I could've sworn they had laser eyes..
Namii chan -I remember having to have my dad do the shadow temple for me when I was little and hiding behind his chair when he fought the Boss - terrifying lol lil me was a pussy looking back at that precious moment now haha not much has change still a pussy but no dad to hide behind anymore rip😑
Jesse Harris I had to pause at some parts but I did it all on my own
@@jesselee1031 damn I wish I had my dad play for me that's actually smart strats
I just ended up not playing the game for like 5 years until I thought to myself “why was I scared of the temple… I need to play through and see this”
I feel like I’d have a similar reaction coming out that I do when I finish watching an old black and white movie. “Wow! Reality is so high definition!”
Lmao same.
James! 🌹
I really wanna do something like this, even if it ain't Ocarina of Time, but I can't really afford a headset
This is on my bucket list before I die for sure.
Who else is completely jealous of this guy right now? Like is there a way that we could download this version or something?
What’s an emulator?
A program designed to simulate a system. That’s how people play old games on PC
It runs off Roms
This video makes me want to tear up a bit, not because how much nostalgias the game brings, but it restores the feeling of being a carefree child that run around in the wild. It's an idyllic feel I rarely experience as an urban kid.
Wow, this was a fantastic watch. It must have been one incredible experience to truly relive a part of your childhood in this crazy way.
Nathaniel did super Mario 64 Vr, swanky Box did ocarina of time vr, now we need antdude do banjo Kazooie VR for 24 hours
Hey... it was the closest to full immersion I could get back then
The future of gaming isn't streaming. It has no right or purpose being the future.
VR is.
The Legend of Zelda: Link?
Nah, streaming will always be around, vicarious enjoyment is not a force to underestimate.
@@MrChocolateDinosaur I think he meant cloud gaming like Stadia
Just imagine how hard it is to make a game from the Nintendo 64 to computer, and then putting the game into a VR headset from the computer. That is crazy.
Of course that would be a haunting experience, any game with old graphics would be a haunting experience.
Don’t even start with the Golden Skulltula....
Exactly. That's how I got motion sickness - by playing a game in *ego perspective* - Unreal 1, after all these years when Playstation 3 was out and I had played with graphics like Crysis.
I’d be more worried about seeing the cursed Skulltula family up close.
Try ET
I'm waiting for a GoldenEye VR mod. Could go live in the bathroom in Facility for 24 hours.
At least you'll have a place to go to the bathroom, if you need to.
Live ya know IN THE BATHROOM lol had to do a NintendoCapriSun reference here.
I want to play a virtual reality version of Thief: The Dark Project
The haunted cathedral would be far more terrifying...
I remember that game haha.
Imagine being able to do that on the 3ds version
Sean C That would be amazing!

At least you didn't spend 24 hours in a worse VR Zelda, like the *_CDI Games_*
*_-twilight princess, majora's mask-_*
@@marcusmccloud6907 oh no you didn't
At least the music will be nice, unless it's Zelda's adventure of course.
[Approaching hour 21] Gee, it sure is boring around here!
@@marcusmccloud6907 Dont ever disrespect tp and mm
imagine if nintendo made a official vr headset like valve with similar capabilities of switch and we got an official updated visual of oot through twighlight princess. next you gotta try the witcher 3 tho
I think it will happen at some point. Might take a few console gens though.
They tried doing that
Twilight princess music at the end made me think what would be for me playing the zelda game of my childhood in vr. It wold defeinitely be an experience.
This makes me want a legit vr ocarina of time.
Literally living the dream. Inspiring nice
I've seen a 24 hours in Super Mario 64 and now Ocarina of Time.
Now just Banjo-Kazooie left. And Tooie.
@Random Person Or both
I'm not a huge fan of VR, I've just never really understood the hype, but this video was actually really cool and makes me think that a full-on Zelda VR game would be one of the most magical things in the history of things!
Skyward sword with an emulated nunchuk will be lots of fun.
This makes me want to see a full VR remaster of Ocarina of Time. That would be so cool.
Swanky, i can't imagine being pleased about fighting the Dead Hand.
link: sleeps on mido's house
mido: wait WHAT THE?!
How did you go to the bathroom?
Piss jugs. like a trucker lol
He pissed off the waterfall in Zora's domain.
And how did he see the time on his phone when he never took off the head set...
Rai Sie 😲
Rai Sie Siri?
I love how much you appreciate the pleasantness of the game, it's so nice :)
imagine doing this on acid lol
was looking for this comment 😂 this would be the ultimate experience
Now imagine experiencing Ben Drowned in VR.
I’m so glad you exist to do these things for us. Just watching this is giving me a freakin’ headache
Working out on Death Mountain?
That makes me wonder… has there ever been a bodybuilder goron character?
The Three Goron Brothers of BotW (Bayge, Heehl, and Kabetta) are supposedly dedicated to working out and getting super ripped... but you realize soon enough that they are lazy af :V
@@angelsmile6942 As a super lazy bodybuilder, I can't hate on em. The gain train's gotta slow down sometimes
I wanna sleep in the Forest Temple on VR with the song playing. I bet that would be a magically surreal experience waking up with a few seconds of a delirious perspective taking in that world.
Sounds like the mod needs a bit more tweaking, I hope someone upgrades it further
Awesome job on this man. I was expecting this to be much cornier.. you proved me wrong. Actually looks beautiful. I hope someday someone can improve the FOV and let people enjoy their childhood gaming environments some more. Great idea!
Imagine a vibe check while you are a day into the vibe
I love this kind of experience. I started playing The Talos Principle and making puzzles but I saw a nice beach area and I just couldn't resist sitting down and putting my hand on the sand. It feels good even though it's fake.
have you modified fov settings somehow? I think everything looks pretty "zoomed" with the defaults.
detailed explanations on how to set this up would be great!
I'm calling for a full week of this. I think it could be done with regular sleep schedule where after every 16 or so hours you sleep 8 hours or so and complete the game. I'm sure it can be done a lot quicker than that though.
That sounds like a side project in OoT: Master Quest.
lol
Imagine playing this in VR in 1998, awesome!!
Why do all youtubers want to suffer with vr+nintendo 64.
I used to be horrified of the larva peahat in this game, seeing it in VR would probably give me a heart attack.
Can we take a moment to appreciate Kaze? The man's a god damn genius and the work he puts into n64 games is incredible.
I would like vr metroid prime :D
Im cry over this video, I just got an oculus go and I have the potential to do what you did and it's almost bringing me to tears that such a nostalgic thing is in my reach, something I have thought about since childhood.
Me:sees redead coming near him
Also me:gets scared
hearing the excitement in your voice throughout the video is glorious, these are the kind of things we could only dream about as children, yet technology brings it closer and closer each day.
Your video makes me want to rush out and buy a vr headset, despite knowing i am very prone to motion sickness and would not have a similar experience, the idea of just being able to live in a fantasy world, even if only for a few minutes, sounds amazing.
Added onto that. i could not help but be afraid when you were on death mountains highest peak for a workout. i would have freaked out due to the hieght (heck, i had to look away from the video just to not panic.)
then he was turned into link & he never came back
this actually made me cry at the end knowing it's over and he had to take the vr off knowing how sweet and nostalgic the game is. it made me so happy seeing him be able to just be a kid and have fun without a care in the world and seeing it end to go back to an adult life is saddening
Hey, at least it wasn't Majora's Mask where the moon literally kills everyone....
Ocarina is far scarier.
videos like these makes you realize how early we are in VR technology....excited to see what's coming in the next few years.
Imagine playing the unreal engine version of Ocarina of Time, that would be neat
This guy created the most legit definition of Nostalgia goggles
Imagine spending 24 hours inside elder scrolls 3 moorwind
Oh, dude!
The scenery, ambient sounds and music!
I feel more for Morrowind and Oblivion than I do for Skyrim :P
I watch this once a year, to bring me back to one of my only happy experiences in life
5:17 imagine seeing this when you were a child
Trueblade -I mean as a child and the game being new it was terrifying without VR ( rip shadow temple that shit was scary) if the graphics were better and you actually felt like you are in the game they would have to give it a higher rating to keep kids from playing it and having nightmares and stuff
@@jesselee1031 Same.
My first ever nightmare was of this boss
You’re a pioneer my friend. I go into watching this video thinking, this sounds stressful I don’t think he can trudge through. You did! Your perseverance in this task is uniquely inspiring. Just think in. 20+ years you’ll be visiting again in your haptic suit and be able to nap within Korkri village in peace.
Why didn't you play the game in HD? Everything is so pixelated otherwise.
Cryzen has an amazing hd mod.
