One small addition, for the rubber pan gasket, there should be some steel spacers on the old gasket that need to be transferred to the new gasket. This is to prevent over torquing the new gasket causing leaks.
Looking at the black stuff that was in there I recommend to repeat the oil change 2-3 times in a row with test drives in between. The filter only do once. After the second change you will feel the difference, it takes up to 4 changes to get back to an acceptable oil quality in the transmission!
Years ago, I thought I saw in an online thread that a dipstick assembly from a vanagon (or other VW model)with this trans can be installed ? That way you don't always have to have a ross-tech.
Good video, unfortunately I have to order a new transmission pan due to my drain plug being too tight. The ironic part is I already have a new drain plug and level tube.
WHOA! AT 7:12 he says check temp is 95C. 95C is not correct check temp! 30C -35C is correct. I would assume at the moment he spoke he confused F and C. It would be appropriate to do check temp at 95F. But vagcom doesn't have a "F" setting. Setting your fluid level at 95C will leave it low! Someone needs to edit this video, as folks watching this could be leaving their trans low due to info on this video. .
Hope you can help I have a2005 2.0 jetta automatic om1 Trans and it would jerk into first and then change all other gears well.. then after warmed up it will not engage first gear.. I replaced the valve body.. guy didn't replace harness even though I had a new one ... and it has the same problem goes into reverse fine but won't engage drive until completley fluid seems fine.. please help me!
Hello everyone I have this gear box in my 02 bora 1.9 tdi 130 It's has 88k miles. The car is literally in showroom condition. It's like a brand new car It has a problem! When I'm driving it 1st thing on a morning every gear change is perfect But as it warms up it slips! But it only slips after I pull off from a complete stop. Red light, round about etc This is how, it's pulls away ok which is 1st gear I'm guessing but then as it goes into 2nd it straight away starts free revving like a manual with the clutch to the floor! But as it gets to 3 rpm or so it kicks in smoothly! Other wise it's perfect?! An if I drive off very very slowly there's no problems with the shifts at all. It makes no sense. But I can't pull out of a give way slowly in an ideal world because something could hit me in the side of the car! So I need this fixing Please help Thanks
Which drain plug is which I'm not under the car so I not sure what I'm about to get into once underneath the car is it obvious which is the drain pan plug and which is the fill tube plug???
Hi. Thanks for the vidoe...i did transmission replacement on a 99 cabrio that has the 01M. After putting everything back and replacing the filter and ATF, I got 7 codes for the valves being either shorted or open circuit. Not sure what to do next! Can it be when i pulled the round plug by the shifter, i snapped the wires?
Hi. I have got a golf mk 4 19tdi alh engine auto. Would this be the same transmission? Or how do i get the transmission code from.? The car has 216000 miles and i dont know when the autobox oil has been changed and it slips in higher gears at times when you give it alot of throttle and a bit if delay when first pulling off. Would the oil change help or make it worse do you think? Also where can you get parts from. Great video
My 2003 jetta tdi once in awhile shifted from 1 to 2 hard but now it's just stuck in first only. Might this be because of the fluid being low to safe the trans or dirty stuck valves body?
Hi i have same car but with gasoline. which oil do you prefer ? atf III I know red one .and i had problem.transmission oil cooler broken and same water in automatic transmission.i changed oil twice but shift gears knocked.solution revision automatic transmission? thanks.
Thanks for sharing Corey. I just bought an 02 TDI Jetta and I've been hearing the 01m is junk. What do you think? And I hear some people are running there transmission/engine with the cooler line disconnected in order to do a flush. They run it until the fluid is gone or foamy. The theory is it drains all the fluid including the torque converter. What do you think about flushing like this? Do you have any tips to improve this method?
01M is not known to be a reliable transmission. At this point most of them are failing or failed. I myself would perform the fluid service twice in a row if you want to get more of a "flush". I don't think running the transmission dry is a good idea.
@ I think this is my case. We had realy belived it is a "sealed"transmission and the car never had the fluid changed for 135.000 milles. It works normal until now when is shifting very hard, starting two weeks ago. Only now I do this search and find out that people change the transmission fluid . I very much hope it still possible a miracle and keep it alife. Was a very reliable car from 2001 to now (Beeatle tdi).
We've seen a resurgence of requests for older models actually! Lots of common-rail owners who took the buyback are resurrecting older ALHs now. This video was done on a car that was in that exact scenario - owner previously had a newer model, but got an ALH replacement.
You need to do a video on changing the final drive oil on the O1M as well if you have not done so already. That gets overlooked by many and is a bit of a pain to do. Good job on this video. I'm always sold 4 bottles of Trans Fluid (from imparts) for this job, but have never been able to put in more than 2-2.5 bottles back in. I measure what came out so I know that I put a near equal amount back in at a bare minimum. Also, I heard you say the fluid should be "red". The new fluid is a clear to light brown/amber color. At no point is the fluid or should the fluid be "red". Just FYI. If you have red fluid, you need to flush your transmission as someone put American type ATF in your transmission by mistake!
You said the question I want to ask?? The original color of Volkswagen 01M gearbox oil is similar to the color of engine oil, while FOUSH 4000 is red, but the specification has G052162. Can it still be used?
@@P880739 If you have a 01M transmission, the fluid mentioned in the video is just fine for the transmission fluid. The "final drive" uses a small amount of "gear oil" such as 75w/90. If you received an approved transmission fluid from IDParts for your car, it should be fine regardless the color. I personal have never seen a new in bottle fluid that was the correct type for a O1M that was "red" in color. It has always been an amber to brown color. I personally have never used "FUCHS 4000". IDParts seems to change brands of fluids VERY often. They are currently selling a "Rowe" brand. Last I bought it they were selling "Febi Bilstein" brand which is amber/brown in color. OEM fluid is amber/brown in color. Verify you have the correct fluid and if it is, use it. Don't put "American" Dexron/Mercon or Type F fluid in your VW. I have a 2004 Jetta 2.0 BBW and FYI OBDEleven, one of the aftermarket scanners cannot see transmission temp. (It's great for most other tasks though). Haven't found another alternative yet either.
@@biggie900 new filter, put the old fluid back in and a tranny additive to avoid any slip. Only use new fluid to reach the level in the end. Always did that and never got any issues👍🏼
The trans oil temp should be between 35 and 45 C when checking. After that you're going to under fill the trans.
👍👍💖
Armed with this video and the kit I ordered from your web store, I was able to change my fluid + filter today. Thanks very much for posting this.
BINGO! This is the Correct video to watch if you have one of these Transmissions.
Beautiful condition on that car, and a beautiful sound of that motor.
One small addition, for the rubber pan gasket, there should be some steel spacers on the old gasket that need to be transferred to the new gasket. This is to prevent over torquing the new gasket causing leaks.
A good point as some of the cheap kits do not include the spacers, although the kit in this video did have them.

except that he gave check temp wrong.
Sure did!
nothing like draining 95C degree fluid onto your hands ! WRONG. 35C is the check temp !
He meant 95F. 35C equates to 95F

At 6:05 he said 85 degrees which I took to mean 85 deg F. I hope that's right. Thanks.
Lol cant get my trans temp to 95 degrees c!
The trans temp should be between 35 C - 45 C or 95 F - 113 F and fluid should be observed "glugging" before you screw in pan bolt.

Did you damage the wire harness on the vavle body?
use Mercon V atf fluid, because an incorrect fluid can damage your transmision.
The gearbox temperature reaches 35 degrees, should you shut down the engine or continue to start?
You need to leave the engine running, otherwise the fluid will drain out of the transmission and you will over-drain.
Clearly vedio !!!
May I ask if I use not OEM ATF ,I use Dextorn ATF would affect the transmission function??
