- Saturday Night Live's writer and Fr. Guido Sarducci character, shares his "Yearbook for the Sheep School". He appeared as Sarducci in the video of Rodney Dangerfield's "Rappin' Rodney", and on many subsequent television shows, including Married... with Children, Blossom, It's Garry Shandling's Show, Unhappily Ever After, Square Pegs and The Colbert Report. the 1970s, Novello started to write letters to famous people under the pen name of Lazlo Toth (after Laszlo Toth, a deranged man who vandalized Michelangelo's Pietà in Rome). The letters, written to suggest a serious but misinformed and obtuse correspondent, were designed to tweak the noses of politicians and corporations. Many of them received serious responses; Novello sometimes continued the charade correspondence at length, with humorous results. The letters and responses were published in the books The Lazlo Letters, Citizen Lazlo! and From Bush to Bush: The Lazlo Toth Letters.
The Lazlo Letters, Novello's first book of stilted letters to celebrities, caught the attention of Lorne Michaels, producer of Saturday Night Live. Novello was hired as a writer for the show's third season in 1977-1978 where he remained through the fifth season, and returned as a writer in the eleventh season. He also appeared numerous times on the show in the Father Guido Sarducci character.

He appeared 31 times as Fr. Guido on SNL, the most of any recurring character. More than most cast members probably.
My favorite
first time i ever saw novello as himself!
The first time I saw Novello, as himself, was on the Tomorrow Show with Tom Snyder. He was promoting his Lazlo Letters book and they read a few and the responses -- very funny and Tom really got a kick out of 'em. When Tom asked what else he had in his comedy repertoire he mentioned his Father Sarducci shtick and tried to explain the concept to Snyder but Tom just didn't seem to get it -- "gossip columnist for the Vatican newspaper." Even I had my doubts until I saw him in character on some later show and thought him hilarious. Still do. It never gets old.
Been looking for that Snyder interview on the Tube, but have yet to find it.

I love this book! It's very strange--not everyone gets the surreal quality of the humor. But if you get it you'll be laughing all the way through this tribute to high school yearbooks.
He is just another caring dude who becomes a fantastic wit when he puts the hat on. First time seeing Don and not having a cigarette in his hand was refreshing.

I love his sense of humor...very original and underrated comedian. Kinda reminds me of Pee Wee -- in that he created a whole complete person with a life, job and all the problems that go with it. But not for a sitcom series...for his own creativity. 🌠

I assume amazon or ebay. It was printed in 1984 by Collier books, and was called Shellville High School Blade. It sold for 6.95 back then.
