Rod, How do you pressure test the crankcase seals? Want to check this on a couple of saws I own. Great videos. Love the way you explain. Easy to understand. Thanks
the easiest way is to start the saw and see if you can get a good stable idle. Then richen Low jet and see if it will slow down and die. If so your seals are good. the other way is use a pressure tester. You need to block the exhaust and intake ports to seal them. Husqvarna makes adapters to do this. Some are meta with rubber backs. Some are just rubber that is cut to fit between muffler and head or carb and intake manifold. Remove the decon valve and use a plug that screws in. Remove spark plug. and use a plug adaptor that will fit the vac/ pressure tester. Add a little pressure and see if it holds for a bit. If not use soap bubbles and paint the seals. If you see bubbles you found the problem. If it still leaks and you can not see bubbles, you have to put the saw under water to see where the leak is. sometimes it is just easier and faster to replace the seals and forget the test.
Rod Simonian Thanks for the information. I will try and hopefully won't need to replace seals but if I do I know where to get the tool to split the case...saw your store on ebay .

Hi It is about the same except for the intake part but this is not that hard. Just put the intake on before you set the cylinder down on the base let me know Rod
I've heard the 268 was open port type cylinder and made less power than the 266 which was closed port. Any truth to that? The book says 4.8 hp on 268. And 4.5 hp for 266.
There was 2 kind of 268s..... 268xp was closed port pro saw and plain 268 was open port saw. When Husqvarna introduced 272xp it replaced the 268xp. Plain 268 was also introduced when 272xp came up, 268 was cheaper alternative(semi pro saw) to 272xp. 266SE was closed port saw indeed.
im a housewife but even i know you dont tighten a cylinder or a cylinder head clockwise or counterclockwise. you tighten a cylinder- cylinder head crossways, and half way. you tighten the next MOST opposite to the next to tighten (which leads to tightening crossways) and ONLY halfways. you go around at least 3 times on every nut on the cylinder-cylinder-head and use a torgue wrench to meet the maximum torgue, not a t-handle. because exceeding torgue is as much of a violation as undertighten the thing. same thing applies to tighten a rim on your car.(altough the rim of a car can be kicked because the basic rule in this is to tighten it as much as you are physically able to, but make sure you spread the tension on the largest surface area, i.e: tighten every nut bit by bit and crossways) i see you making a nice circle tightening the cylinder... nut next to nut making a nice circle. Even if it are only 4 nuts you just violated the most basic thing in mechanics. tighten the MOST OPPOSITE nut on a circular connection on EVERY occasion and you clean out ur crankcase, or anything greasy, with diesel. not gasoline with some shit in it. cheap good ol, easy to obtain DIESEL , the stuff you get at your local gassstation btw im here becaue im the only english speaking person in my family and tommorow we are buying a husqvarna 266 se chainsaw, and i have to translate the user manual anmd the oil u use to install the new piston is the very same oil as u use for the mixture to run the saw on, but even better(because its cheapo) just use motoroil. it will burn away anyway. and why dont you just elevate this top cover with some washers instead of grinding a hole in it? and nicasil plating is very nice, unless you need to bore the cylinder again, becasue nicasil doesnt allow oversized pistons beacuase you simply cannot machine the nicasil material, exactly like the chrome plated parts like the trottle valve in the carb of the motox machines , have em wear= have em shot and get an oversize piston to install (motocross 125cc two-stroke obviously basic knowledge, yea this girl happens to know about motocross 125 cc engines, i aslo know somethings about the 500cc engines for that matter, you know... back in the day when these were still made, when there were still men that dared to ride these kind of bikes...) and the kit is for those who dont know what cylinder porting is about, like they dont know what happens when you grind down your cylinder head, or in case of the 500cc two-stroke motocross engine .. add an extra head gasket(for certain occasions, like having your girlfriend riding your bike)) you might wanna consider a rebuild of your chainsaw done by me , and i can make a very nice set of cupcakes to go along with it
+Regan Teresa WoW very nice. You are correct. however I use the same fuel mix to wash out the crankcase as I do to run the saw. Sometimes I even use a pressure washer to do the first cleaning of the crankcase. I also have used motor oil as a pre lub. Makes lots of smoke on start up which is kind of fun. The problem with washers to raise the top cover is there is now a gap between top cover and saw body. I guess one could use silicon seal to solve that problem. So i will make that suggestion. It may cost more to bore out a cylinder or just replace it with a new one. Now for the cupcakes, sounds interesting. Where in the world do you live?
hahaha i live in the netherlands, ;) BTW i actually got use the husqvarna 266 se , it has a 24 inch blade and ive personally cut down 4 trees with it, thickest was 15 inches and like 25 ft tall (which were in a backyard) strained 2 fingers while starting it up, but that was better the next day tnx for reviving a teenage memory, i wasnt really housewive material in my teens haha lemme know when you ever get to visit, well eat cake and talk 2 stroke engines! And i actually have a tip: when removing the circlips for the piston pin i held down a piece of cloth against it so that the clip wouldnt shoot off and end up in the crankcase, i actually had that happen once had to bring the engine to the shop, i didnt want to split the engine myself because i feared messing up the gears. it costed like two second hand 266 se's.
+Regan Teresa I do not think any one can be a good housewife in their teens. Too much to see and do. That is a good idea on circlips. Where did you learn all of this? have you ever thought about repairing saws for other people? Just a little side business that you can work on part time. I also sell Sitka Gear. Are there any Sitka Gear Dealers in your area?
oh i grew up with all boys, i had a dirtbike like all of them to fit in so wouldnt be lonely i guess haha. (there wasnt much to see where i lived ;)) which i fixed myself for the same reason. We would be preparing the bikes together on saturday and ride the next day in the dunes. And we all knew best how to do it all. So i got familiar with the two-stroke engines, the only thing i never did was splitting the engine case and porting and stuff but i think i still know everything about it. Its just cool to get that stuff all coming back to me watching these chainsaw videos. It had slipped my mind ages ago . i couldnt even start the thing myself at first but i had a great time back then anyway. Kinda funny the saw reminds of it. I remember the inside of the cylinder looks the same with those ports and all. only the bikes engines had a cylinder head |Did i already mention i learned everything the hard way? hahaha nahh my repairing days are over, and there are barely any trees where i live in since i live in an coastal area. We just so happen to have allot of fast growing trees on our land, like willows and trees like that. soft wood that grows like grass. they need to be cut every 3 years or they will block the sun. there are no real chainsaw dealers around here, beside a franchise for husqvarna and stiga i believe, stuff for gardens nothing proffesional like you guys have.
I need to get parts for a 266 SE Husqvarna. It was run with out mixed gas so it needs a new piston and cylinder I know. It belongs to a friend in Africa and I am taking the parts to him in July. just remember to buy the parts form Simonian Saw Service Google it homes
