Licenses are good for 10 years and you do NOT need to take the tests again to renew. It is worth getting your HAM license and opening all the opportunities that HAM radio opens up to you.

In 2020 I used Ham Radio Prep and Ham Study. Got my Tech ticket shortly after starting and today I received my General. I was not going to go for extra originally but looks like I actually will within the next few weeks. Everything you mentioned are great. I stuck with the two I mentioned do to my learning style.

@@HR4NT My dad was a Ham, but very little of the info actually stuck, he would be stoked to know we are doing this, but he passed away a few years ago. He actually gave us a transceiver years ago when my husband originally planned to get licensed. We actually know several Ham operators here locally, our boys were in scouts and our troop would go to the Field Days for support, then the club would help the boys with a merit badge. The tech stuff is bogging me down, but a late morning espresso may have helped me focus better today, ha ha ha. So I will try that again tomorrow. I've been working through the Ham Test Online all week. My husband got the book/study guide, but he's worked as an electrician through various jobs, so his this sort of thing comes more naturally for him. I downloaded that app last night that you mentioned, so that should help. Thanks for all the tips!

30 years ago, I had about 2 years of electronics in the Navy, mostly RF, Radar and Crypto, equipment. I pretty much forgot everything I knew, but I'm sure it will all come back to me. I recall being in the upper 10% on the exams. I think I could do this, no problem. General test goes more into RF electronics, right? Back then, I was thinking about getting a ham radio license, and they called it the 'General Radio Telephone' license. But ham operators just called it the general. At that time, the first level was morse code, and I'm glad they are no longer requiring it.
You should be able to breeze through the Tech exam just fine. General will be a bit harder, but certainly doable. Getting your general will definitely open up a lot more features and privileges to you in ham radio including the HF stuff which is where I spend most of my time. Although the do not require morse code to pass anymore, I do highly encourage you to check it out once you pass and have the time to focus on it. It really is fun and more so when it is not a requirement...LOL Go study and knock out those exams! Best of luck to you! Thanks for watching and for the comment. 73!

Thank you such a wealth of information I was curious on how to go about getting my ham radio license. And you gave me all the information I needed and answered just about every question I had. As a teenager I was very much into cb radios and single sideband and had my face license. I am now retired and like to.pick up where I left off years ago as a hobby. Thanks again

i made a comment to a friend about being interested in comms and she came over a couple days later with a duffel bag filled with aarl manuals. her father and uncle were super ham nerds. after opening the manual i pretty much made the choice that im not smart enough for the subject so ive been looking for beginner level videos. this one here helped with the confidence level. thank you

On my website, I have book suggestions to help you pass your exams and they are based upon HOW you learn. If you like the technical stuff,. I have books for that, if you just want to memorize the questions an answers and learn at your own pace, I have books for that as well. Check it out, don't get discouraged. I am new to you channel but I love the way you explain things. For a future video, I would like to see someone walking through the knobs and buttons on a radio. The tests teach you how the inside of a radio works, but no one teaches how to operate the radio on HF. Please make a video on that!
Hi Steven! First, welcome to the channel! Glad to have you here! As to your suggestion, that is a good idea, however the buttons are different on various radios as to what does what. If you go to my website, hamradiofornontechies.com/ , on the top menu thee is a section called Ham Radio Suggestions. Hover over that and a drop down menu shows up with four of the most popular radios out there. Pick one you are interested in and the page has images of the front of the radio and the screen with hotspots that you can click on for a description of what that button does as well as what the different screen icons mean. After spending hours on researching HT's, I bought an Anytone 878UVII Plus. I will not open the box until I become licensed. (An incentive to pass the tests) I did go for the $49 combo Technician and General tutorials and after completing the first section I tell you what... This program makes learning easy! Thanks for the info. Great video!

Really great video! It is quite overwhelming trying to figure out which way to go but your video nailed it and made it crystal clear for me. I was here in Texas when that storm hit and know exactly what you talked about first hand! Just bought my first old TS820S that I will be setting up and going to get all the licensing done. Don't think I can go all 3 at once but heck if I can pass a LE TCOLE exam I can pass this one I am sure. Again thank you for the great direction!

Thank you! This was the information I needed as a total newbie with zero knowledge. The information was well presented. The who, what, why and where. I now feel like I have a route mapped out. It's so close to July I'm going to ignore the ones that end June 30. I'm won't be able to take an exam before then. I'm shooting for studying for all three throughout July and plan on testing in August.

I find the phone-based exam apps to be highly effective. The one I used allows for sub-element quizzes and full tests. It tracks quiz results, test results, and specific questions you got wrong. I also use the approach of focusing on the correct answers and not confusing myself with the wrong answers. Just got my general license this past weekend and now studying for my extra. You got this!👍🏻
I would like to see a video of how a newbie does some of his/her first talking on the radio...a little conversation...something like that. It would show us new guys how to talk during our first times.

Hope this helps motivate someone out there:
My approach, some 25 years ago, was to use a computer based program to regularly test my knowledge and focus on remembering the correct answers. I easily got my Technician back then and later got the written part of the General, but never learned the Morse code to finish getting my General. The FCC later dropped the code requirement for General, but it wasn’t till this past month that I decided to go for my General again. I employed the same study method, using a phone app this time for knowledge testing and again focusing on the correct answers. Got my General this past weekend with a score of 34/35. Studying now for my Extra, with a target of early December.

I used Ham Radio School for my Technician License. I highly recommend Stu. His class was very knowledgeable and you learn the hows and whys. I am a classroom learner and I needed a classroom type. There is no way I could have learned by reading a book since I have very bad dyslexia. I enjoyed his class. Check it out.

I am a retired Microwave Engineering Technician, know some electronics, worked in the Industry in the design, test, manufacture 'microwave stripline ampliers' 4 - 18 Ghz, and I know how to use the Smith Chart to tune an antenna, Impedance/Admitance, VSWR electrical engineering stuff...now retired, I have always wondered what HAM Radio professionals do... I want to learn how and be an AMATEUR Radio to apply some skills I have attained in Electrical and Electronics education schooling / knowledge!!!!... Thank You for the Inspiration.
Hi Roderick!! With your background, ham radio might be a perfect match. With the skills and knowledge you already possess, you will find many things in the hobby to grab your interest, most notably, building antennas. Your radio is only as good as your antenna, which may be one of the reasons hams seem to collect them. Not only to just have a variety, but building and experimenting with them is a great way to learn more about ham radio as well. I have a few videos on how to study and pass the exams and whether you are just going for the first one, Technician, or planning on taking all three down the road I think they will be helpful to getting you licensed and on the air fast. I was all excited to get a Ham license! I'm 72 and when I received the new ARRL manual I quickly found out the material was too much to retain. I returned the manual and converted to CB. At least in an emergency I'll be able to reach someone. Too bad there is not an easy course for us old guys, or at least an in for vets.

I failed the technician exam twice and I been studying for it again this third sunday of March 2023, I hope I pass it. If I do pass the technician I want to go higher, to play with a HF, QRP, CW, POTA and SOTA.

As a officers son I spent the first 23 years of my life with the best America has to offer, At least those with the courage aka ball to defend her with their life. That being said the Department of Defense School System needs to start doing their job and start these classes.

I only want to do grms
A GMRS license is easy to get, just fill out the form and pay the fee. No test involved. I think you would have more fun in ham radio, but that is my opinion. Thanks for the comment and for watching. 73!
What gets me is the electrical parts I deal with some at work but I always think the capacitor question is resistor amd so on with tec license. I've only studied for a couple days now though
Just keep at it and find a way to trigger the correct answer in your mind when you see that questions come up. You will find a way to retain the info and pass your exam! Hello I’m 29 and just starting in ham radio and I took my technician test and i have a retevis rt5 handheld and I found my local club and their frequency they talk on but I’m having trouble with how to put those in to be able to talk to them if you could maybe help that would be great by the way awesome channel

I am not too familiar with that particular radio, however I did find a page that shows you a step by step instructions on how to program the radio. You will need the frequency that your club uses and hopefully the CTCSS Tone in order for your radio to be heard by the repeater. Hi, I am looking to take the HAREC exam but I have a dilema, I currently live in Spain and my Spanish language skills are not that great... I was wondering if I can take the HAREC exam online with a Spanish translator sat next to me or if I can take it in English through one of the Irish test centres even though I live in Spain. Would appreciate any help on this subject.
I was not able to find any information tat would help you except to say maybe ask them if they have a copy of the exam in English. I can't imagine it being proprietary to a single language of a particular country. I could be wrong. I would contact the folks giving the exam and see if someone can understand and answer your question. They may have an answer that they just don't mention on their site. I really like how you cater to us non techies, all I want from ham radio is to be able to talk to my brother and my cousin in Missouri and Washing state. Do you think that’s a good enough reason. I have my GMRS license and that came with an frn number, can I use that or is it a different one for Ham radio?

I had my General ticket in the 1990's but I let it lapse and went over the grace period. Can I retake only the Tech exam and get my Call sign back to being o general again? Thanks.
Within two years of expiration you can retake the test and get your license back, but I am not sure it will regrant your General privileges being that it was so long ago. If your call sign wasn't reassigned to another ham, you can probably get it back by requesting it from the FCC. I would find a local testing facility in your area and talk to someone and see what your options are. You may have to just go and retake the tests again. I hope this helps. That is a very good question. I think that because of different regulations by other countries authorities that administer the tests that they would be very different questions than what the FCC dictates here in the USA. You can definitely get a good basis for amateur radio by reading the material for the US, but if you are studying for a test in a different country you should get the study manual for that country in order to have the most accurate information to help you pass that test. I like your confidence but I been trying for the last 3yrs and I about to just give up.
Hi Wade, first, do not get discouraged. How do you learn best? What method allows you to retain information? Are you good at just memorizing, or do you prefer to know the background of what you are learning? I ask because we all learn and remember stuff differently. If you are a memorizer, then use those books I have listed on my website by Buck K4IA. His book is literally just the test questions and answers. If you want to know more background, then the other books on the site may be better for you. Learn a section at a time and then go to one of the many online free practice tests and see how you do. Couple of them books only cover up to 2022. How do you know if the questions have changed since then?
The books will most likely have on the cover the info telling you what question pool years it is valid for. Honestly they only change about three to four questions when they do this so the information will most likely still be valid. The online practice tests will all be updated automatically. Sooo....if one takes a test and screws it up is there a period of time where as you can re-take it ?
I think you can just repay the fee and take it again. I never heard of a grace period between exams upon a failure. If you do your studying and use those online tools for the practice exams, as long as you are around the 80% consistently, you will be just fine on passing your exams. As you go UP in the testing, are the questions in the Technician also in the General and Extra or are they different all together?
They are completely separate pool of questions. Technician covers the basics, like a foundation for amateur radio. General goes further into the hobby with a bit more technical stuff like frequencies and more operational info. Extra wraps it up with a lot of technical stuff, more components and what they do and more on antenna theory and frequencies and such. Thanks for the question!! 73!
I am a truck driver will I need a ham radio license if I buy a Ranger 99n2
According to the research I did on this specific model "Transmitting using this radio requires an Amateur Radio License." It took me a bit to find out, but it looks like it may transmit on frequencies in the 10M band that hams use. However, getting your tech license is super simple and if you follow my other videos on how to study and pass, you will do fine. I’m a retired truck driver and I am interested in getting my HAM radio license mainly traveling and off road use.
That is definitely doable as there are a bunch of mobile radios perfect for what you want to do. The first step would be getting licensed and passing your Technician which will get you privilege's on VHF/UHF and "some" HF bands. If you are interested in doing a bit more HF, then study for and pass your General and that will open up a whole new world of radios and bands for you. My website details everything you need to get started and I have suggestions for study guides based upon how you learn. If you like to just memorize questions and answers to pass the test, I have a book for that. If you want to know more background on each subject on the test, I have books for that as well. Either way, the tests are not too difficult as long as you study and take practice exams until you are proficient enough to go take the test. One concern that I would have about getting a HAM license is that if someone knows your call sign, then it is a simple matter to look up your name and physical address on the FCC's website... For example, I know that you are off of Cartwright Rd in Missouri City... I live fairly close to you (on the other side of TX-6) and often shop at the Wal-Mart, Lowes, and Home Depot that is just south of you on TX-6... Is there some way to prevent the FCC from publishing that info?

It took me 3 times to pass the technician ticket. I don't do go on tests.
I got my Tech in 2018. And even still today. Been trying to get my General.
After spending much money on ham courses, and then buying the new 2023 general books.
The General blows my mind and is much harder I believe.
Where I live in Birmingham AL. Tried to get into a ham club. No help at all.
For me it's been miserable for me. After being a OTR truck driver for 20yrs.
I could speak to anyone with no problem.
I have a hard time learning this stuff. The Elmer's where I live aren't help
After critique after critique on the radio it's driving me away and spending much money on radios.
To me this has been a bad experience. You say the wrong thing no response.

I am sorry to hear that. The trick I figured out is that you have to find HOW you learn best. Are you good at memorizing? Do you prefer to know the details on how things work? Once you figure that out, it makes it easier. There are tons of videos online that have FREE classes to get you licensed. Ham Radio 2.0 has an entire series of free classes. I'm a little worried about taking the test because of memory problems from a TBI and what do you suggest?
If you watch my video on passing your ham exam in 10 days, the technique I used was to get the book from Buck K4IA called "Pass Your Exam The Easy Way". It only has the questions and correct answers. Everyone learns differently and you will have to find the formula that works for you. I suggest reading the front section of the book a couple times to get an idea of what it is you are learning. THEN go to the Summary part on the second half of the book and just study, study, study. As you go through the sections you will start to see that in some of them you will start to know the answer before you finish reading the question. If this happens, I would focus on the sections that you are having more issue with until they become easier. Make sure you take practice tests at hamstudy.org. Maybe twice a day until you start getting above 75% success rate. Once that is consistent, you are probably good to go and will do fine on the test. I hope this helps. Sorry it was long winded. There are so many things that are available to do in ham radio that it would be hard to list them all here. It would be based upon your interests. One thing for sure is that when communications go down (i.e. cell phone, etc), you will have a way to communicate with the outside world. MORE POWER!!! 🤣 All the "public" radios with no license required tend to be QUITE limited in both range and capabilities. A UHF or VHF "walkie talkie" radio here in the US is typically limited to 0.5 watts which might work for a mile or 2 tops, a ham radio handheld will typically run 5 to 8 watts and with a killer antenna I've talked to a station 30 MILES away! Mobile ham radios for your car typically run from 50 to 100 watts vs say a CB radio which can only run 5 watts! Even with the lowest level technician license and a cheap DIY radio off ebay you can use Morse code/CW to talk halfway around the world on HF bands such as 40 meters!

No I would say pick one based on how you learn the best. If you just want to know the questions and answers and are good at memorization the book by buck K4IA would be my choice. Is there an updated info for 2023 ?
The only thing that has changed is a few questions in the Technician test pool and the fees have gone up. It is how $15 to take the test and $35 to the FCC to get your license once you pass the exams. The general test is also changing a few questions this month or next. Other than that, the same principles I touched on in the video are all still valid. I hope this helps you. Can i bypass the arrl technician test and just take the general test?
LOL...unfortunately no, however IF you take the Tech and pass they will offer you the General right there free of charge. If you pass that, they will offer you the Extra free of charge...if you pass that, then you just paid $15 and passed all three tests. The reason for this is that there is very different information in all three tests. The Technician test lays the foundations of what you can and cannot do whereas the other two focus a little on foundations and new rules pertaining to that license level, but also adds more technical stuff about antennas, frequencies and bands and electronics knowledge. From the research I did on your question, the FCC turned down the idea of offering ham license exams in any language other than English back in 2007. I am not sure if that has been updated or changed as of 2021. I would contact a local ham club in your area and ask them if that is possible. I hope this helped you a bit. If you just want the questions and answers, I highly recommend the book from Buck K4IA. They are about $15 easy to follow and if you use them to memorize the answers, you will do just fine and pass. I used his books on all three exams and passed. Again, it depends on how you learn. Some like to just have the questions and answers while others like to have explanation and background.
