Jason Garrett Kunaigirl Actually, Chargeman Ken is a lovecraftian horror. Just see: An alien race arrives on Earth for no know reason and does unexplainable things. A young boy in weird clothes always stops them. Why do they fight? What makes Ken invincible? The actual idea of the anime is that the "superhero" is as unhuman and unknowable as the aliens. Earth becomes a battlefield of two godly forces of chaos, there is no good or evil, Ken is seen as good only because he fights his main enemies first. Who knows, maybe Ken would go to destroy *humanity* if he had no enemy? The episodes are so short and badly written simply because they accurately portray the conflict, which is by itself out of understanding. The logic and actions of Ken are so different from our possible understanding that if we had 20-minute episodes, we were unable to perceive the story. The best thing in the entire universe is the inability of human mind to correlate all of its components. Also, Ken episodes are so badly written and short because you can see only a tiny part of the grand cosmic struggle of Ken vs aliens (being a separate alien scheme and a fight) without losing our mind because of sanity-shattering revelations. The hand and letters are actually a glimpse into the huge, unknowable, unexplainable universe.

Actually it seems like it was the main selling point of Tatsunoko, like the newer Doom games contain ridiculous amounts of violence which makes them THE Doom games.
Anime back then used to be pretty off the rails. Mushi wasn't as absurdly violent, but Leo played with his dad's corpse for pranks, Astro used to wreck shit, Princess Knight had rape attempts. I have to assume they didn't think things through for the first decade or two of tv anime.

I adore Tatsunoko, but this is a disappointing show because, unlike Gatchaman, or Mach Go Go Go, or Kurenai Sanshiro ("Judo Boy"), it never really settles on a tone. It's just part comedy / part Bruce Lee (for that time). Beautiful designs, really well drawn; in the late-Gatchaman style, but played like a stupid sitcom, and it's not funny either, so it looks great, but it's a villain of the week show with stupid gags.
