    Thank you so much for sharing this video. I am about to embark on a quilting hobby and I've just purchased a sewing machine, it will arrive on Monday. My plan is to start off by making aprons in order to become familiar with my machine, different fabrics, etc. Your video has really helped me see the reality of selling your handmade crafts and I can now better approach my venture with a good attitude. Thank you again and may you do very well.

    Hi Nia
    Thank you so much for this valuable advice on running your craft business. I will be taking your schedule pointers into my schedule and using them myself. I also a full time crafter and a mother of three here in the UK. You make this look easy.
    Right now I'm up at 10:15pm making my products with my baby sleeping next to me.
    This is not what I envisioned running a business......but hey you gotta start from somewhere.
    Thanks for sharing. Can't wait to see more of your videos.

    I have been thinking about opening an etsy shop but I didn't know the logistics of running a craft buisness. This video was both encouraging and inspiring for me. And now I feel more confident about having an in home buisness. It's so wonderful to see a woman lifting other women up and sharing her wisdom with them. Thank you Nia.

    This has been so helpful! For a few years now I have wanted to open up an etsy shop but have talked myself out of it because of three kiddos under 5.... But the things I make for my kids or home or parties everyone loves or wants me to make them and they constantly ask why I dont have a business... I think I am finally ready to take the leap!

    Thank you so much for this uber-honest video! I've been thinking about starting an etsty store for AGES and I am finally biting the bullet and getting some products together to sell. I (like so many others) am just scared to take the leap, but I'm sick enough of my day job now to just GO for it! I also want to have a creative job, something I ENJOY doing, and something I can do from home when I become a mom. Thanks again for your words of wisdom!! :*

    This is literally come at the most perfect time for me!
    I've made a small amount of wreaths for family and friends and a baby announcement board for a friend of mine to. I made them after seeing the ones you had made and loving them!
    Now I've done it I'm really eager to do a Facebook ground and etsy shop, I'm from London and feel like wreaths aren't as huge here as they are in America except at Christmas time. So I feel like i may have found something that I love making, it really excites me and makes me feel like I've achieved something and that people may not be used to so might really enjoy it. I've been so nervous and constantly worried about it. You've answered so many of the questions I've been asking myself.

    I love this video, Nia!
    When I had my little girl 3 years ago, I started my own ceramics business from home. I get frustrated at times because I feel like people don't quite understand how big of a process anything with ceramics entails, and how NOT EASY it is, but I won't give up because I really want to be successful! I made a profit in my first year, and sold about the same the next year, but interestingly enough, I noticed that my 2nd year orders were much larger orders. I find myself having a hard time with being consistent though. Some months all I do is create with clay, and then I have months where I don't even want to touch it, or just simply can't because I don't have enough time to do it the way I feel like I should, and I do notice how business lags a little when I do take breaks, and then it takes me a longer time for business to start back up again. I'd love to start my own etsy shop, but don't yet have a way of doing what I do via mail. Someday though. I'm trying to figure something out. =)

    Thank you so much for this! I love your family vlog but didn't even realize you had your own channel! Questions: Did you register as a business? I thought I could just open a shop on Etsy, which I did, but am hearing that to do it the "right" way I need to register with my state/city/county and charge tax and all that fun stuff. That's the biggest hindrance for me right now because my profit would definitely not cover all those fees right now! Any insight on this would be appreciated!

    Thanks for this video. I started my own Etsy shop/business about a year ago, because I had a strange feeling that my job was not going to last, and my husbands health forced him to drop his hours at work. So I thought, hey, if this helps us pay for gas for a month, its worth it. In November, I was let go from my job, and through that time, I kicked it up on my production, but sales were not matching. (I have a storage bin and a half full of Christmas wreaths not sold). And now I am getting ready to go back to work and wondering if I should continue. But you mentioned doing this on top of 40 hrs a week, to help bring in a little bit more money and I have decided I WILL keep moving forward with it. There is no reason I can't make a wreath/craft a week.

    • @NiasNest
      @NiasNest  8 років тому

      +Heather P (MamaMIA) good luck to you! One thing with wreaths is that making a ton before hand is hard to gauge sales. I always make 1-2 and then I'll make more as orders come in. You might try to sell your bin full in early October for auction prices and start fresh with new ideas to present your audience with!

    Am just getting up nerve to sell. Although everyone's been pointing out there is no fee on etsy, I am comparing online sales to brick & mortar sales. Seems to be a bigger risk and expense if I pay rent, utilities, taxes, etc, on the shop. I'm sure I'd be happy with a small fee. (But glad none). Your q&a was great.
