The Columbia Power, Gas & Electric Company built the Miami Fort Power Plant in 1924 about 4 miles west of North Bend, Ohio. The company soon realized that at that time the power plant was located in a very remote location and they needed a way to entice workers to come out and man the plant. When the plant was built, Brower Road didn’t even exist. It was just a dirt farm road so the workers would have to go up Cliff Road past Harrison’s Tomb to the end where Dugan Gap Road begins, park their cars at the top of the hill and then walk down the road to get to the worksite. That road is now closed and no longer exists. The area was so remote there wasn’t even a railroad built in the area yet. The rail line had to be built to bring materials out to the power plant.
The answer to entice workers was to build Columbia Park Village directly across the road from the power plant so that workers could live in the village yet be able to literally walk to work.
Construction began on Columbia Park Village in 1925 and by 1926 people were living in the village.
There were about 38 homes built for supervisors and laborers. The village also included a clubhouse and a school.
By 1956 Cincinnati Gas and Electric had taken ownership of the power plant and Brower Road had been built making access much easier for workers not living at Columbia Park Village.
Please watch the video to find out more details about the village and why it eventually disappeared.
