Brokeback Mountain is one of my favorite movies and this is honestly one of the best examinations of the film I have ever seen. Thank you for sharing this and keep up the good work!!

Oh, the poster was definitely based off the Titanic poster in terms of composition. The whole star-crossed lovers thing. I must have forgotten to mention it - which is frequent for me. Usually at the end of my videos in the credits there's at least one thing that I forgot to mention when filming, and thought of when I got to the editing suite.

Technically but who knows if they would have felt comfortable even today. Not every person feels comfortable coming out. It depends on the people and their circumstances. It's nice to think that they would but I'm not sure especially given Ennis' character.
I have seen this movie several times. Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger are excellent. Ledger mesmerized me in each and every scene. ….Ledger's death really saddened me. He had immense talent and I was looking forward to a superb career for him as a premier actor. But his life ended way too early, similar to James Dean's story. Both gone too soon.....Excellent analysis and review.
But James Dean asked for it and Ledger did not!!!
and the comment about the film being better than Titanic is so true, though I do think it's interesting to note that the theatrical poster for Brokeback Mountain was heavily based on Titanic's.
And it should not have!!

I truly believe that Brokeback Mountain is the real “Romeo and Juliet “ story of our time. Such a masterpiece, I hope one day it is treated as such, we need to treat all love with the great importance that hetero normative love is treated. This is such an exquisite love story, nothing else matters.
I stumbled across your excellent review here. And it's nice to know that the film had such a positive impact on young people coming out, well, for you anyway. I'm happy for that. I recall having very mixed feelings about its homophobia, I had to continually remind myself it was a period piece. It was a bit hard to swallow in '05, me having been out for decades with two longtime loves under my belt. But I remember my personal, almost suicidal, struggles in the 60s all too well. Still, an emotionally charged Shakespearean tale of love and tragic loss in the vein of so many gay films that we girls seem to relish through the tears. I remember being particularly troubled by Ennis' final words and would have changed them to, "Jack, I'm sorry." The symbolism of Ennis' shirt forever hugging Jack's in his lonely closet as life goes on without him is heartbreaking and had me crying all the way home. I get out my DVD once a year religiously and re-watch this classic tale and it always leaves me sobbing.
Brokeback Mountain should have won the award for best picture.
But It has won the best picture and the best director and the best actors and the best supporting actress.
I think Brokeback Mountain is fantastic and I most definitely cried during the last third or so of the movie the first time I watched it. I've never been a huge fan of arthouse-style films and have come to see a lot of media about gay people with a focus on AIDs to be a little _passe_ by now (Though I do rather like _Angels in America_. On the other hand I found _Philadelphia_ to be rather dismal and boring instead of emotionally moving), so it was extremely refreshing to see an epic-style love story focused on gay characters.
One thing that _did_ bother me though was the first sex scene. I mean, Ennis just _dives_ right in that first time and if not physically impossible (Usually, it would be), it's got to at least be really uncomfortable for Jack.
P.S. Concerning something you mentioned: I can rather like a gay, or ambiguously gay villain or anti-hero, as I can find myself relating to some of the qualities found in them that aren't found as much in heroes, such as interesting moral standings and less of a desire to fit themselves into the status quo. As long as a character is still a good character (as in, not simply defined as "gay" and "evil") I can appreciate them without thinking of them as being a statement of "gay people are bad".
There's Captain Jack Harkness from Doctor Who.But it's shitty that the only male character that isn't gay or straight and isn't manipulative and predatory in a tv show I can think of also fucks aliens.

I was pleasantly surprised to see ‘The Shell House’ mentioned here. It was the first LGBTQ themed book i had read, and definitely the reason i started to let go of my immature misconceptions around the subject. It’s a book that will always have a special place in my heart.
There is one polarity in the way Ennis and Jack approached their relationship that I hadn’t noticed until you mentioned it. It never occurred to me that Ennis’s aggressive and borderline animalistic response in the tent scene was probably not what Jack had anticipated. It is true that Jack is the more romantic, tender person who makes eye contact, emotes, and seeks touches. I’m amazed by how I learn something more about these characters with every rewatch.

I used to live in Alberta too (Alberta Canada that is.) I lived in Edmonton Milwoods area, so in a city.
But still I don't think I've met another Alberten in the comments on youtube before.
I really like this movie. It should have won the Best Picture Oscar. And let's get one thing straight: homosexuality was NOT what it was about. So many people believe that and it's a real shame!

IMO the best lesbian movie that's also a period drama would have to be "The Girl King"
Great job, really enjoyed it. One thing that always jumped out to me though, jack sought other relationships and encounters with other men whole Ennis never did. Would this not suggest that perhaps Ennis was bisexual where Jack was basically gay and couldn't get by with just 'a few high altitude f*cks a year.'
I think this is to further illustrate their different nature, Jack being more in the open with his identity while Ennis's whole deal of the story is to be afraid of society's regression against this kind of love, otherwise he would engage into the romance with Jack more and there would be way less tension. Brokeback Mountain doesn't really care about Jack's and Ennis's respective identities in my opinion, it doesn't rely on labels only on emotions and how their suppression can lead to lifelong suffering.
i think it is more of a self-acceptance thing. the two men are obviously Bi as they engage in sex with both Genders. Ennis refuses even further sexual or romantic relationship with other females after Divorce.

for me their specific labels of sexuality never really mattered but it was more just jack obviously felt more comfortable with his sexuality and if ennis did too hed probably be seeing other men- when he dates cassie its never implied that they have sex- i think its just genuine repression from him
Man, I just watched the movie today and I found it so sad.
Of course it was gonna end badly for them, there was almost no hope for gay people back then :(
the movie is a masterpiece, cinematography, use of backgrounds and delineation, performance , non verbal communication specially the eyes, just watch it❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
