I am still playing over 13 years later. I was one of the original closed Alpha testers on the Shadowlord server in March 2010. I have played consistently over the years and have loved every moment. I enjoyed a lot of 1.0 from the world being alive to the ferry rides like in FFXI. The world was amazing and there was no duty finder and people where in party in the world. I gave feedback with others in the Alpha test about them releasing the game in its current state and how it was not ready as it was buggy had no new content on release. I remember the game getting better though when we got a chocobo and some primal fights, they where really tough but such a challenge. I love the game but I did prefer the way the game was heading and at one point there where a lot feeling along with myself the game might be switched off completely and for SE to cut their losses. I with others begged them to keep the servers going and the game and to not give up and here we are today ^O^
its a great story but it couldve been so much better if it werent for the anime tropes like "The power of friendship" and all that but then again its a jp game so that kind of stuff is a given
I do love a clear and concise recap of how FFXIV rose from the ashes that is made for all viewers, not just us FFXIV fans and MMORPG fans. While the 3-part document done by NoClip tells this story from the side of the developers, there is another series done by The Speakers' Network that tells the story from the side of the players if you are genuinely curious.

You kind of got the order of events backwards on the decision to scrap 1.0 and YoshiP being brought onto the project. Yoshida was brought in first, and he was the one to present the board with the two options for XIV 1.0 - keep it on life support or scrap the whole thing and remake it. Fortunately the board trusted YoshiP enough to take the gamble on the latter route, and it obviously paid off.
I'm one of the rare people that actually enjoyed my time in 1.0 since I had come from FFXI. Sure it had some annoying features, but I was playing a lot right up to the start of ARR. Honestly, I hope support for this game doesn't last that long. I can't wait for a new MMO to be announced, because FFXIV has long since reached its limitations regarding gameplay, graphics and level design.
The crystal engine that was shoehorned in because of execs with their hands in the cookie jar, was far to limited for a MMO. The fact the developers got it working at all is an achievement in itself.
My favorite thing about the Endwalker release is that they had to suspend digital sales of the game because it was too popular. Yes, it was a result of them not being able to get additional servers they'd requested due to the computer chip shortage in the pandemic. But the 6-10 hour queue times to log in were at least eased by the fact that I knew that it was because the game was so popular, they almost kinda sold out of digital copies. That's insane
The comeback of FFXIV is a pretty well known story, but I like how you cited how Yoshi P, made all the teams go back to the basics and not only replay FFXIV 1.0, but also competing MMOs like WoW. That kind of humility is sorely lost on a lot of developers these days e.g. Bioware refused to let devs even acknowledge Destiny, when they were making Anthem. Perhaps, if they hadn't had such egos, they could have learned and even improved on what had come before instead of insisting they knew better. Great, concise expose!
This has nothing to do with humility, it's just common sense to observe your competition. In fact, Yoshida is pretty arrogant. He desperately wants to be seen as the savior of FF, and to achieve that, he is throwing all the other previous FFs under the bus, in his interviews.

I tried FFXI when "The Vanadiel Collection" was released, unfortunately though I had already been playing WoW for about a year and FFXI's gameplay felt extremely unforgiving in comparison, the idea of losing XP and levels for dying was frustrating because I was used to being able to solo level, and FFXI pretty much required you to join a party with other players, don't get me wrong I do like running content with friends, but sometimes I just want to play around on my own and FFXI's tendency to smack you for even thinking about running solo didn't mesh with me. So when FFXIV first came around, I could see some similarities with FFXI so I avoided it, I was still playing WoW at the time as well too so I had no incentive to try FFXIV. I didn't even realize how 1.0 turned out until I heard someone talk about ARR having a public beta, I tried it since it didn't require me to buy anything and was surprised as to how it seemed like the devs had been looking at WoW (which turns out they were) because the IU and gameplay definitely felt familiar, the beta didn't have any MSQ incuded though so I my experience was just doing side quests, but since I was still playing WoW it was kinda the choice of "do I play the WoW clone with an FF skin? or stay with WoW?" though funnily enough a couple years later I would end up quitting WoW when the guild I was in turned from being a guild about having fun to a serious raiding guild. fast forward to 2021 and my current circle of friends are raving about the Endwalker announcement, and I'm hearing about people leaving WoW for FFXIV, and then I find out that I could get a Magitek Armor mount in game that plays the March to Narshe Theme from FFVI and 2 years later, I don't regret subscribing to it one bit.
Even the random npc names that appear in this video at the end, i remember them, and the fond side content about them. 'The land's alive, so believe' - Answers
Tanaka's performance was just baffling. He had been with Square since before even Hironobu Sakaguchi (he even got Sakaguchi hired) and had been deeply involved with a large number of the previous titles but for some reason, he seemed like he didn't care one bit about 14.
It's his Seniority. In Japan, even if you are a complete buffoon at work, as long as you worked there the longest, you are still basically treated like a God in the Office. :)
Been playing since 1.0 (and still have my 1.0 character + screenshots from back then), Game was very difficult and confusing back then. Shout out to everyone that was on Besiad, Mysidia, and Balmung back then. While I liked the game back then, I just didn't play too much of it because it was so hard. and then 2.0 came out and wrecked the game so badly, I remember everyone rioting and quitting the game. then the other expansions that came later on made the game worth playing again for most people. But not me! I didn't like none of the changes! and I wanted the old game back. I remember it took 2 hours to queue as DPS to do a duty dungeon back in the lvl 50 cap days. Nowadays the game consists of 80% cats, 10% rabbits, 10% other races. Looks like a real mess to me, but the game has a very very large active community and player base. Always been on Balmung since the beginning, and that server is FULL of players from other servers, seems like its a central hub in NA now.
NO. How NAOKI YOSHIDA saved FFXIV. This guy had a vision, and convinced his team to stand with him on what most companies could only dream of accomplishing. Yoshi-P and his team are the phoenix team that saved a dying game AND designed its new life simultaneously. Now here we are in the beginning of the game's second decade.
FFXI was so profitable back in the day that i am almost certain that it was the game that was bankrolling XIV development in the first place, and after 1.0 had failed. it truly was an incredible game for its time, but it was clear that they were investing a lot less into it when XIV was in development. i still believe that FFXI walked so XIV could run.
Another fact, at least twice if i recall correctly, Square Enix had to actually stop sales of the game because it just got too popular and the servers couldn't handle the huge influx of players.
Still can say I honestly enjoyed ff11 gameplay way more then 14 pre 75 cap. Although 14 had better graffix and story everything else lacked. It’s a bit better now but I miss changing gear via macro during fights and making all gear u obtained valuable in some way. Also u skill chains/magic bursts made ppl work together as well as blue mage being able to do these solo! Super epic
FFXIV is the best mmo i play so far.. Main Story Quest (MSQ) best best best story ever compared to another mmo..Not to mention if you are not raiding player, you still can casual play which is crafter or RolePlayer..Thank you Yoshi-P never give up and may your journey rise and rise to never end.
...how in the world did you think that FF11 was a failure?? It did really well, and is still a functioning live service. You can literally still play 11. Go make a video about 11.
@@DaveControlLive 11 did not do poorly. By no measure did it do poorly. It got beat out by WoW in sheer numbers but it didn't do poorly at launch unless you're referencing the fact that it had a huge hardware and price hurdle for Japanese PS2 players?? The international release did perfectly fine. Show me your research that suggests it "did poorly."
@@hehashivemind6111 You're right, I was mistaken by "incredibly poor". It did so-so, but it failed to break even until more than a year after its launch. Square itself also stated in 2006 that FFXI had "unsatisfactory performance of subscription revenue". This was from Square. I don't think I can post links, so I'm sorry. This comes from Gamasutra and Edge. But, for me, specifically, the game came out when I was in High School, I remembered at the time hearing negative things (in terms of its performance), hadn't thought about it too deeply as I didn't play it, and I was under the misconception at the time. In the video, I literally laid out how successful it was, and just pointed out at the end that it was interesting to me as I was so wrong.
@@Ukaranyes, I know. I literally said that in the video. However, I never saw that news at the time. As I said - I didn’t play the game, so I didn’t look for news about it or keep up with it. He asked how I could have possibly thought XI wasn’t successful, and it was because I only saw/knew about the early reports. During the video I talk about its success, and just briefly at the end mention I had a misconception and was wrong as I didn’t realize how successful it had become.
I do have to argue with the constant quips agains subscriptions for mmo's. all those free to play mmo's are actually buy to play. and if they arn't then they don't put out nearly enought content as subscription mmo's.
Loved my time with this game but like any other MMO it aged terribly, i can't even bring myself to play Endwalker due to how dated everything is. I'm wondering what their plans are after releasing FFXVI, i doubt we'll see more expansions.
And just add furry ;) (And thank Blizzard for messing up their Chinese host, leading to many Chinese WoW player jump ship to FFIV) On the other hand, ESO is also…. Yeah so for fantasy MMO FFIV is actually pretty attractive.
No Xbox version final fantasy 14 because japan is done with Xbox after disastrous western version of phantasy star online 2 on Xbox as end of Xbox in japan is fast approaching
I wanted to start an MMO, and at the time I was between FF14, GW2 and Terra among the upcoming ones. Terra Didn't click, as it didn't have much beyond the action combat. FF14 the disaster you mentioned. Needless to say, I stucked with GW2 and never regretted it.
People treat yoship like a god. He’s let 14 become a stale content roll. Too much dedicated to 16. Hopefully with 16 being done, 14 will finally become good again.
That's one of my biggest complaints too, all the NPC's are just iterations of the same body type so they can recycle animations easy. It also took a long time for their individual personalities to shine through.
Enjoying XI a bit more tbh. The 4 month update schedule and focus on raiding has really killed it for me. Too much FOMO content and content that's designed to only ever be run once or twice. Vana'diel feels much more alive than Eorzea. Thanks for keeping the servers on Yoshida but your game's kinda hollow.
Hmm have you been playing xi for a long time? Because I tried it out but felt the community was incredibly rude and pushed new players away so I couldn't keep playing
Welcome to the future of games, my man. If you hadn't noticed already, we're already dealing with this kind of thing in the form of Games as Services. If they didn't work, or bad business models, companies wouldn't make them.
FOMO content? Only content like that are the holiday events and the rotational Unreal's and maybe the PVP sets but everything the average player needs to get done is still available . Even stuff like Eureka and Bozja still have an active player base
Genuinely curious what documentary? I’d love to watch it. This is part of an entire series of games that ‘saved’ their franchises, and FFXIV was a pretty obvious choice. It’s not exactly unknown. My info was from GDC, interviews, and various articles from the time. Glad you liked that other video more!
@@DaveControlLive I assume you're the person in this video. Yes, as the other person has mentioned, I'm referring to former GameSpot employee Danny O'Dwyer's No Clip documentary on the original FFXIV and Realm Reborn, from which you have rehashed the information and posted as another video. It's even in this video despite you implying you're not aware of it, take a look, see for yourself, click 9:18 and look at the top left of the screen. And to reiterate, you talk and attempt to joke around to your audience like they're children. It's really condescending. Stop it.
@@FLStyle You're correct, I'm the person in the video. Take a look at the end of the video, I wrote the video, I didn't edit it. I had no idea that clip was used, and I haven't seen the documentary. The information is widely available, the story has been known for an extremely long time. You could literally argue No Clip was rehashing information in the exact same articles I read. This is a well known story, in general. It's like saying No Man's Sky redeemed itself - it's ridiculous to think anyone who talks about it wouldn't find the exact same information. If anything - you're just arguing my research was correct, as we both apparently found the same info. I wrote the video for 'everyone', not just fans of FFXIV, and not just people who play MMOs. Obviously, people who play the game are aware of things like subscription services and fees. This series, as a whole, is more generalized. If you felt like I was talking down to you, that sounds like a 'you' problem. You don't like my style, great. You don't like me, great. I'm glad you had another video to watch you did enjoy.

Tanaka's performance was just baffling. He had been with Square since before even Hironobu Sakaguchi (he even got Sakaguchi hired) and had been deeply involved with a large number of the previous titles but for some reason, he seemed like he didn't care one bit about 14.
Perhaps he had zero interest in creating an mmo and wasn't trying as hard as he should have. Thankfully, Yoshi P was able to clean up his mess.
It's his Seniority. In Japan, even if you are a complete buffoon at work, as long as you worked there the longest, you are still basically treated like a God in the Office. :)
There was a feeling of "Its Final Fantasy, the fans will buy it no matter what" This comes from Yoshi-P himself during the no clip interviews iirc
I've quite enjoyed a lot of GameSpots videos lately. Keep up the good work guys and gals
Thank you! We’ve been really enjoying making these show! :)
This video has some late 2000s early 2010s vibe, I like it.
Thanks for this great explainer. I never knew a lot of the information you mentioned. 5/5!
GS really making some great content. Hurt Locker and this. Good job keep it up.
WHERes FIREARMS HISTORIAN REACTS?
greatest redemption for any video game PERIOD. nothing has matched it. As stated around the web, FFXIV is SE golden goose. But Yoshi P is our Primal.
You wrote FFVII wrong.
Awesome How Final Fantasy XIV SAVED Itself! Video.
Don't forget that FFXIV sold out of digital copies. Something that proves that FFXIV is just the best MMO out there.
The year is 2065 and there are still the same videos being made about FFXIV's redemption story.....
Super epic
Let’s also not forget u could actually beat primes then summon actual versions of them and use their ultimates 😂
I don't care for the title of "saved itself", nah, it was saved by a lot of hard work by yoshi-p and devs.
FFXIV what an EXCELLENT FF! it has THE BEST FF story i have EVER seen
Not only did FF14 save itself, but its kept Squareenix afloat given their bad decisions these past few years.
final fantasy xiv reborn as final fantasy xiv a realm reborn.
That Bad Boys 2 misdirect…Chef’s Kiss
Isn't he the guy doing FFXVI?
Yup!
That game is in good hands. Yoshi P is such a treasure. FFXVI will most likely be a game of the year contender.
Forcing your employees to play FF14 1.0.... that's just cruel.
...how in the world did you think that FF11 was a failure?? It did really well, and is still a functioning live service. You can literally still play 11. Go make a video about 11.
Because it did incredibly poor when it launched. I didn’t play it, so didn’t realize its eventual success.
@DaveControl
In 2012, Square-Enix's CEO said that FFXI was the most profitable FF game.
I've never played FFXI nor FFXIV.
And there is nothing wrong with that.
Before I watch, does this have any spoilers?
Yep, sounds about right
Now we need a new game that is ff14 everything but dark souls combat.
Really really late but welcome to the party Gamespot lol
It didn't save itself. Joshi-p did ♡
The game didnt fail for me when i first started on ps3 ffxiv beta to actual game to FFXIV getting the Yoshi- Job Class😂
#BringBackClericStance
I do have to argue with the constant quips agains subscriptions for mmo's. all those free to play mmo's are actually buy to play. and if they arn't then they don't put out nearly enought content as subscription mmo's.
I love you Yoshi-P and CBUIII
Loved my time with this game but like any other MMO it aged terribly, i can't even bring myself to play Endwalker due to how dated everything is. I'm wondering what their plans are after releasing FFXVI, i doubt we'll see more expansions.
And just add furry ;)
(And thank Blizzard for messing up their Chinese host, leading to many Chinese WoW player jump ship to FFIV)
On the other hand, ESO is also…. Yeah so for fantasy MMO FFIV is actually pretty attractive.
rip old smn
No Xbox version final fantasy 14 because japan is done with Xbox after disastrous western version of phantasy star online 2 on Xbox as end of Xbox in japan is fast approaching
yet other ff fandom still cant appreaciate 14 at all lol. yknow those remakes money? yea right bet
Final Fantasy 14
I wanted to start an MMO, and at the time I was between FF14, GW2 and Terra among the upcoming ones.
Terra Didn't click, as it didn't have much beyond the action combat.
FF14 the disaster you mentioned.
Needless to say, I stucked with GW2 and never regretted it.
People treat yoship like a god. He’s let 14 become a stale content roll. Too much dedicated to 16. Hopefully with 16 being done, 14 will finally become good again.
Ain't this video kinda too late?
Yeah, it's pretty late to the party.
おじいちゃんが若造りしてて痛々しい
Wish the characters in XVI didn't look so bland. I prefer characters more colorful and with more personality lol
I want them to do something like FFX again.
That's one of my biggest complaints too, all the NPC's are just iterations of the same body type so they can recycle animations easy. It also took a long time for their individual personalities to shine through.
Still better than 15’s design. 🤷♂️ but yeah I sort of get what you mean
Lol tifa’s colour is black and white mostly other than her red boots and armguard, one of the most loveable character anytime.
Tbh I still don't like much in this game and I think that MANY things were way better back in 1.x. But there're things that I do like. Meh.
Hm? dunno what content you are talking about but I've played the raids and such much much more than just once or twice
@@legendofswords And both the Unreal and events can be done in a single not too long sitting on a window of like 4 months.
You could just watch the documentary that this guy has ripped this video from instead of listening to him talk to you like you're a child
@@shiresiaAh, gotcha - thank you! :)
@DaveControl
Since when did FFXIV save the franchise? 🤨
Second 😉
First 😀
WOW is still on top today!
No MMO will ever be a real final fantasy. That is just a fact.
Try playing it first.
Imagine missing out on the most story-rich FF in the whole franchise.
🎣
Crazy how the not real FF has one of the best FF stories.
Crazy how it’s literally a mainline game and has one of the best stories in the franchise lol.
But “iTs aN MmO” while literally carrying FF at the moment. 😭
Not for pc? Boo
Rapelay is a 10/10 masterpiece and someone should remastered it
Rapelay is god tier
Rapelay is way better than every final fantasy game
