  • Yep, hipsters would love it. You used to be able to get movies on vinyl. That, and other technology which was kinda shite so went away, all featured in todays video. BUT ALSO, what you have all been waiting for: the zebra mask is finally here. I filmed this video like a month ago, so hence the delay. Enjoy.

Wooo I recommended this, because no one knows what these are, and I get a kick out of pulling out Starwars contained in a giant 13 inch square cartridge and showing it to people.
Video quality ranges from "about a VHS tape" to "a little better than a 50 mile away TV station on bent rabbit ears." The real issue is when the stylus wears out, or the silicon layer starts to wear... You'll get skipping, and a shotgun of garbled frame skipping back and forth over a scene.
I inadvertantly got a massive collection of these from a co-worker. His father 'had a bunch, and didn't want them anymore,' and said you can have them if you want. I'm glad I brought my truck, as 'a bunch' was about 800 discs, an a half dozen players. Since each disc weighs a pound and a half, I found myself on top of 3/4 of a ton of old movies, most of which no one has ever heard of, all displayed in glorious 240 lines of analog joy.

As one of the employees of the "mighty RCA Corporation" in the 1980s, I can tell you that one big driver of the CED format was that the discs could be pressed on the machines already used for LP records. Unfortunately, VHS VCRs dropped so quickly in price at about that time ($2000 to less than $150), RCA couldn't get anywhere making a profit on the Selectavision players. Agreed, they were late to the party, but I doubt they could have made a go of it anyway. Another failure for "the most trusted name in electronics".

    • @BoDiddly
      @BoDiddly 4 роки тому +1

I don't remember my first VCR, but I remember my best and most favorite one was a Mitsubishi with 4 heads and auto tracking!

I worked the front desk at a motel in 1981-3. We rented vinyl record movies. The 12" record would be in a plastic case, kind of like an album cover with the movie info on it. You would insert the entire case into the player (about the size of a VHS player.) The case would be ejected, leaving the record inside. At the end of the movie, the case was re-inserted and the record came out with it. The user would never touch the record itself or the needle which played it. It worked pretty well.

12:50 Under British law, I believe this would fall under "Back up copy", which was perfectly legal. Now if you gave or sold that copy to somebody else, that's Piracy and Illegal.
I'm fairly sure it is still in British law that entitles you to make your own backup copy of pretty much any media you have a licence for. This technically makes DRM and other anti-piracy measures Illegal, as they prevent you from being able to perform your legal right of making a backup copy.

It had probably bounced around the case all throughout the shipping process, but when I put it in, it worked perfectly and I was able to complete the game without issue. Contrast that to the 80s when you had floppy discs that were instantly destroyed if you touched that one exposed part. It's amazing how modern Blu-ray discs not only hold far more data than past formats but are also infinitely more durable.

We had a Selectavision, and we played some of those movies over and over for years. I was a kid, but I never noticed any degradation in playback, that's news to me. I played Rocky, The Bugs Bunny Road Runner Movie, and Airplane too many times to even guess. My mom watched Dragonslayer a couple of times a week for EVER, it was her all time favorite movie, she was weird.

VCR's were similarly expensive at 1st at well over $1.000,00. The price dropped fairly quickly and the VHS tapes grew in length past the 30-minute limit. Reel to reel was a system that used magnetic audiotape much like, but wider than, the later cassette tape, however, it was not enclosed in a case but rather was wrapped onto a large reel. Think movie film reels but smaller. You would simply put the pre-recorded reel on one spindle on the machine and then put an empty reel on the other spindle and load the tape by winding it past the playback heads and then attaching it to empty reel. Reel to reel was primarily used when talking about the larger tape machines used by hobbyists which had 7-inch reels which fit 1/4 inch wide tape (as opposed to 10-inch reels with wider tape sizes used by professionals) mounted on the side (horizontally) of a fairly large machine about the size of a medium-sized suitcase. The quality of the sound was very good but the machines were relatively expensive, heavy, and cumbersome to use. One advantage of these machines is that the recording length could be 2 hours or longer depending on the playback speed of the recording only held back by how much tape could be fit onto a reel. The better quality machines had different speeds at which sounds could be recorded with the quality of the recording improving the faster the machine was run. (Faster = more tape = more tape surface = richer sound recording much like density differences in digital recording for files on your computer, etc. today). One more note* - The biggest reason to keep making older technology devices is that people often have large libraries on older mediums which if replaced legally, (in fairness to the artists, engineers and so forth, particularly if buying music or movies for the 1st time, for all the hard work, expense, and talent which they put into creating them.) could be quite expensive. Library, now what is that?

I remember those laserdiscs. I never had any, but just saw them. There are some UA-cam videos about them. They also were apparently not digital, but analogue. One can say that they were the forerunner of the DVDs.
First time I've even heard of that forerunner of the laserdisc.

They only have 1600 different movies but there all classics i got a collection of 800.they were made in the early 70s but the ceo of rca thought people only wanted to watch movies in the theater and not at home so he cancelled the program untill lazer disk came out .

I just love the fact that the Duel Disk, having music and DVD content, was basically an early Playstation Disc. It's only made funnier by the fact that both the Playstation 1 AND Playstation 2 discs had this exact same setup (Minus flipping the sides and replace the videos with games), also developed by Sony.
Speaking of which, anyone else notice the alarming amount of failed tech in this involving Sony?

Man I haven't thought about all these old bricks for soooo long... Not that I'm old enough to have used these things, but old enough to know they existed. I think I remember asking my mom what an a track(?) was. I think that's what they were called, like right before VHS were a thing. Then like 10-11ish years ago in a video store my friends and I overheard some 10ish year olds asking what a VHS is. Our reaction was about the same as my Mom's those years ago.

Selectavision is RCA's brand name for the technology. It was eventually produced by other manufacturers, with the more generic term for it as CED, or capacitance electronic disc. So Simon should do a search for CED player as well, and it'll likely yield far more results. Incidentally, RCA recycled the Selectavision name for use in a line of its VHS players. To make things more confusing, there was a period where both the CED Selectavision, and it's VHS sibling were being sold along side one another.

I have a decent collection of Laserdiscs, but only one Videodisc- it's like a giant floppy disc, and the player is like a massive floppy drive. It's a fascinating format, and while it's not really worth using to watch your favorite older films (even VHS would likely be better quality due to the aging issues) it's still cool if only as a display piece- mainly because the giant floppy disks usually have the movie's official poster printed on the front.

My dad had a reel-to-reel. Back in the 1990s, I made a cassette of a recording he made in Detroit, when he took his reel-to-reel to a Dave Brubeck concert and recorded him. He also had reels from many big-name Motown musicians, although I was more into jazz at the time. Such live recordings from the 1960s may be worth something, but I'm terrified that playing that cassette today may snap the tape, and my dad has no idea where his old reels went after my parents moved.

For Wierd tech you want to talk to Tech Moan, VCD's were another contender for meh video play back, barely above VHS quality from the compression and usually were 2 CD's per Movie and to play them you either needed a Games Console with a card add on (Sega Saturn or PS1), a PC or a DVD player which rendered it pointless.
My first MP3s were also Lime flavoured with a 50% chance of Malware or dodgy movie.
