The story of Ashab e Kahf is one of the most famous stories in the Quran. It is the story of a group of young men who were persecuted for their faith in Allah. They fled their city and hid in a cave, where they slept for many years. When they woke up, they found that the world had changed a great deal. But their faith in Allah had not wavered.
The story of the Seven Sleepers, also known as "Ashab al-Kahf" in Arabic, is a well-known narrative in Islamic tradition. It is mentioned in Surah Al-Kahf (The Cave), which is the 18th chapter of the Quran. The story revolves around a group of young men who sought refuge in a cave to escape religious persecution.
According to the Islamic narrative, during the time of a righteous and just Christian king, there were a group of young men who believed in the oneness of Allah. However, the majority of the people in their society were polytheists, and the king was oppressive towards those who did not share his beliefs. The young men refused to renounce their faith, so they decided to flee and seek refuge in a cave.
Once inside the cave, they prayed to Allah for guidance and protection. In response to their sincere prayers, Allah caused the young men to fall into a deep sleep. The sleep was intended to be temporary, lasting for a number of years. Allah mentions in the Quran:
"And you would think them awake, while they were asleep. And We turned them to the right and to the left, while their dog stretched his forelegs at the entrance. If you had looked at them, you would have certainly run away from them, and you would have certainly been filled with awe because of them." (Quran 18:18)
The number of years they spent in the cave is not specified in the Quran, but various traditions mention that they slept for around 300 years. During this time, the environment around them changed, and the people of their city eventually converted to monotheism.
When the young men woke up, they were unaware of the time that had passed. One of them was sent to the city to buy food, and he was amazed to find the currency and language had changed. Suspicion arose in the city when he tried to purchase food with outdated currency, and the authorities were alerted.
The story of the Seven Sleepers serves as a reminder of Allah's ability to protect and preserve those who are steadfast in their faith. It also emphasizes the importance of seeking refuge in Allah during times of difficulty and persecution. The narrative is often cited as a lesson in patience, trust in Allah, and the transient nature of worldly life.
