Super Hero V2 Stirling Engine

  • This is a two cylinder Stirling engine that I bought on eBay.
The two cylinder pairs are arranged in a V2 configuration.
There are two things special about this engine:
First, it looks like a superhero with huge muscles.
Second, it has some very strange displacer pistons. They are not airtight cylinders but aluminum cups that are open on the hot side.
In fact, they are no displacers at all since they don't displace the air because they have almost no volume.
These "displacer pistons" are sometimes called "transferators" (Transfering Regenerators). Search "Transferator Engine" on Google!
They are similar to "displacers" made out of steel wool.
They work as follows: when the aluminum cup dives into the hot air, it cools down the hot air and heats itself up.
When it moves to the cold side it dives into the cold air, heats the air up and cools itself down.
So it transfers the heat from the hot side to the cold side.
At the end of the video, I let the engine run on one cylinder pair driving the other cylinder pair and hoping to make it a refrigerator but unfortunately it's not strong enough and stops running.

I love Stirling engines, I only have 1 LTD engine but it's been running continually for around 2 years now.

Very interesting this engine, but what really caught my attention, was this hot piston leaked. I did not imagine it could work.

    That's brilliant! Well done!

    suggestion:
inside VCR's is a really super high quality spindle that's perfectly balanced (especially the Japanese manufacturers). they would be pretty easy to use in these engines and the VCRS can be found for free or very cheaply.

Now that makes me wonder if a Lanchester type flat twin can be built: that would be really smooth-running.

thanks for posting. interesting displacer design. because one end is closed, air is still being displaced. a pinion gear on the crankshaft between the flywheels would allow power to be taken off.
historically, stirlings ran slow. these days, they can be made to run pretty fast. unfortunately, most people don't realize that the best way to take power from a low-torque source is to use reduction gearing. some energy is lost, but reduction gearing isolates, somewhat, the engine from the load. consider the design of a gearmotor. cheers

Does it actually improve efficiency, or merely simplicity?

some late thoughts. you may know that an engine that Cannot do work, is a Do-Nothing. at :28, i do Not see an output shaft. this Inverted-v design, and Convection, is guaranteed to, rapidly, get the metal parts warm and keep 'em warm. Including the Cold side. googletranslate
