This album has been hitting hard for me lately. I think there’s a subtle story lurking beneath it that ties together the emotional impact… coming of age and fighting addiction. I think Layla and Nadja bookend a sequence of songs about wanting to escape addiction, with Nadja kind of leaving the question open as to whether it was a success.
Just my interpretation tho…
Absolutely beautiful
I was so excited when this album came out. I 100% slept through the past two years because I had no idea there were any singles released. But I love this record. II is still my fave album.
Loving this more and more. But yes! II is just perfect. I picked it up on a whim and I remember everything about that experience - from seeing it in a crate to listening for the first time.
I found your channel because I've been obsessed with this album and i just needed to watch a video review of it. Everything well said! This album was a grower for me, unlike sex & food which was my first UMO album and which really blew me away. But V is content to take its time, like you said, and i think that makes it a unique and still very lovely UMO album. I love it.
Great review man
Thank you kindly
I agree with most everything you said but ’the beach’ is a rad song. And you didn’t mention ‘rear view’, another UMO gem.
‘
You're right, they both rip.
Great review man! Appreciate your points. I think he definitely dropped too many singles leading up to the album, but as you said it’s not a detriment to the album itself. Meshugga is probably my favourite track, or In The Rear View
Thanks! Yeah, I probably didn't say enough about the non-singles here. It's all growing on me listen by listen, and the vinyl just came 😎
My top 1 album of the year for listening time
Always played from the beggining to the end, its great
This one grew on me through the year
I wanna let you know that my feelings have been the exact same as you. I've been so unbelievably hyped for this album and I felt so conflicted when I finally got it but it's not a fault of the album. It's just that some of the album will not be as instantaneous as singles you've had for years at this point.
Yep. It’s convinced me to delay my gratification for other albums, especially if the release date is far away or unspecified. Thanks for checking out my review.
listening to some of this now. The music it self has its moments, however they have a bit of King Gizzard or Broken Social Scene approach to vocals that I don't know ultimately works for me (and I actually like a decent amount of music from both of those bands despite that). The background, low-fi approach can feel like it could be a short term novelty.
I can understand that. It's interesting to think about which vocal affectations or production trends will become representative of our time. There is a niche for everything, and the market's so saturated, that it's hard to imagine a sound like UMO or King Giz being identified with our time as strongly as the instantly recognizable 80s male vocal style or 90s grunge sounds.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
i cannot agree with you more on the singles. I thought i was the only one who thought that way. The album as a whole is great and sonically it's very UMO, but some of these songs are a year old and the others were shown of sometimes MONTHS before the album came out and every one of those songs WE'RE the album's banger songs', leaving a majority of songs unheard to be just the instrumentals - which are fine but, not exactly anything special left behind to hear. It feels like the Gorillaz approach of releasing a song at a time to gain hype, but if there's nothing even better left behind then the hype just builds to this disappointment I'm feeling.
I freaking love this album! UMO just never misses! if you haven’t listened to or reviewed mk.gee before please give him a listen and review I’d love to hear your take on his stuff!
I will definitely check him out. Thanks so much!
I found this album a bit irritating on my first listen and abandoned it for a few weeks, returning for another go more out of curiosity than anything else. I knew there was something there but wasn’t getting it. And then I did. In a VERY big way. This band and specifically this album are one of my best finds in the past decade and I am more amazed with every listen. I get your comment about listening in the car and highly recommend listening with quality earbuds or headphones to get the full effect. Great review!
This has grown quite a bit for me as well. Appreciate the comment!
Technically speaking there I wouldn’t confuse tame impala with umo at all. Great review you are right about the multi love album specially the way you describe the casual cruelty song. I agree with you about releasing all these singles …. I did feel it was too revealing…we felt we already knew the best part of the album before it was released … my favorite tracks of this album are the rear view más sugar and Layla… cheers for that umo sound.
Cheers! Yeah, the disco and psych thread is there, but at this point they're far off the Tame Impala path. Rear view is really a grower.
Smart words
🤓
so many albums sound terrible in the car!! Great review, thanks dude
Yes.. low mids are completely lost in the car. Thanks for tuning in!
Honestly i dont agree that the other songs are palying catch up. The other songs are probably my personal highlights of the album. Guilty pleasure, messhuga, rear view. Those are all modern masterpieces
It’s like eating a delicious meal, but I’ve eaten half of what’s on the plate every week for the last year. You’ve got me sticking to it, though! Those are my favorite non-singles.
This record is a lot better on vinyl. Not that the stream is bad, but the lofi thing comes through better and it sounds less compressed.
Noted. My vinyl came with two disc 2s... 🙃
@@MattOLearyMusic Yes, I know. I have it.
honestly i love this is not another Multi-love, that album has a like 4 bangers and the rest is just SB skits
that album is 100% bangers for me
@@MattOLearyMusic facts, it’s great front to back.
There are some bangers on this album. Weekend Run is such a good song.
No my friend, Layla is the best lyrical song on the album, The Widow is the best instrumental. Meshuggah follows that up and so does Nadja.
I’ll give it to you, because ya seem passionate
