Wtf? The fact that almost every single patient she ever had ended up turning into a skeleton and dying didn't tip her off that her "treatment" wasn't working? This woman was clearly delusional. I realize times were very different back then, but it is mind-boggling that she was able to get away with this for so long. I cannot comprehend how people did not catch on to the fact that she was essentially running a murder house for decades -- or that the very few who did simply didn't do a damn thing about it. What an incredible story. Thanks for sharing, as usual, Sin. Keep up the awesome work, my friend!

Amy gasp when I saw the title! I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS!!! I grew up in Olalla and have been to this property many times before it was demolished. I know the family that lived in the house & they still own the property (build another house on the land instead--oddly enough, non Hazard-related hauntings still happen in there). Fair to say that even now people with easily diagnosed illnesses are left to die due to medics making assumptions, ignoring, etc. It's also been shown that women can still be very much ignored when presenting symptoms as we all know they're so "hysterical". Love this story! So glad you ended the series on such a good one! I was born and raised in Tacoma Washington and currently live in Bremerton, not far from Olalla, so I know the story well. I read the book Starvation Heights by Gregg Olson many years ago and Caitlin from the channel Ask A Mortician has a video on the subject as well. It’s fun to see different takes on the same story. And I just love the stories so close to home.
I do believe intermittent fasting can be good for you in certain instances. But intermittent in the key word here. I personally feel best when I do a 20 and 4, fast for 20 hours, intake all my calories in a four hour window. It’s not for everyone and certainly not a straight fast for 40 days! Astonishing that she was treated so mildly, not only given a minimal sentence, but allowed to emigrate, when it was perfectly apparent that she would start up her quack practice again.
Let me guess: she was softsoaped because she was a woman. Also, since the majority of her victims were women as well, maybe her crimes were regarded as less serious than otherwise.
Hard to speculate on the judge's conclusion that this woman posed no further threat to society, but I guess it does demonstrate one hard truth: that no amount of Law Degrees and Bar exams and legal practitioners' licences can help you if you were born a congenital fuckwit to start with.

Each of your Sinister Stories are so different from each other, being alike only in how interesting, even fascinating they are. Love it! As a nurse,, I was particularly drawn in by this one. Good heavens, the different emotions that coursed through me as I listened! Thank you once again, Jiles! (And Erik!)

The town name is spelled "Olalla" not Ollala. I grew up in that town and know this story well. Use to take friends driving out near the site, telling them the story as the sun would set.

oh my... I live in Union Washington RIGHT down the road from Olalla. Also two days ago got out of a 28 day treatment center 2 days ago that was in Olalla. 🙃 I do just love the PNW & all it's sinister secrets. The Olympic peninsula in particular is one of the most gorgeous places to live. Also many places to hide... secrets.

I’m sure that the two sisters became hypochondriacs and afraid of death when two of their sisters both died of scarlet fever and they were all still so young, they had no comprehension. The “doctor” used and abused and murdered these two women with the scared mindsets of teenagers.

I do a 7 day water only fast on the first of each month and have been doing this beginning at age 25. Even with this being a routine and I'm used to it and enjoy it every much. Still I would not be able nor would I ever think a longer fast would be safe. Although I know a person can safely fast up to 30 days I personally would not attempt it.

Gregg Olsen wrote a great book about this, the house used to be right down the street from my mom, now it's just an overgrown lot. "Patients" used to end up on the lawn of the house down the block 😱
