What the verse actually says is "kept by the power of God THROUGH faith". In order to be kept by God´s power you have to have faith. And as Paul said, he KEPT the faith (2Ti 4:7). God doesn´t believe for you.
@@D12Min Actually, saving faith DOES come from God - it is both a fruit of the Holy Ghost and a gift from the Holy Ghost. It is this supernatural faith from God that allows us to believe and stay saved.

Calvin also believed in "evanescent grace" which is the idea that one can accept the truth of the Gospel and show all outward signs but later fall away and be lost. He invented that idea because that is what he (and everyone else) observed. Of course this brings us back to the realization that you can't know if you're "elect" until after you die. Not a very practical doctrine, is it? You might as well believe that you can fall away and not be glorified in the end.

It isn't--but unfortunately, people do put a Gnostic, heretical interpretation on that verse. Understood rightly, John 10:27-28 only teaches that Jesus' sheep are actively, presently, listening and following Him in an on-going, continuous sense-this is the condition that is present in that passage. The passage does not teach unconditional eternal security. Also, "snatch"=forcibly remove.
Notice nothing can snatch us out of God’s hand. That implies EXTERNAL. The same goes for Romans 8:38-39. However we know based on many scriptures that sin always separates us from God and that could begin WITHIN ourselves if we allow it. Meaning, that in order for us ti be plucked from his hand, and cast into hell would be essentially plucking a piece of himself out, and casting it to hell. The book "The Myth of Pelagianism" puts forth the theory that Augstine invented Pelagianism as something to compare his own novel teachings to. In his accusations of Pelagius (who didn't hold to his invented Pelagianism) the focus was on this mythical heresy on not on Augistine's own views. So he hoped, it seems, that his own views would be uncritically accepted by the Church without having to be subjected to the critical scrutiny of a Council. With respect, this entire documentary series creates some pretty extreme strawman fallacies about Christians who believe in "eternal life." It's also ironic, because they're saying we support gnosticism (we don't), yet they themselves are more gnostic by definition than we are. They also seem to love to fixate on 'church fathers' for some reason. No one needs to ever study Iraeneus or Augustine. It sounds like their gripe is with these church fathers, not with Christians who believe in the Biblical phrase "eternal life."
All Christians believe in eternal life. That phrase isn't up for debate. The question, can we know with 100% confidence that we are saved now and that we shall remain in a state of grace until the day we die. In the parable of the sower, Jesus talked about believers that converted with joy then fell away in a time of trial. Paul wrote of his own fears he would apostatize. Because we can not know for certain that we have the gift of perseverance until the day we die, we cannot be 100% eternally secure. But that's just the iceberg. There are also the Free Gracers that believe we are free to sin as much as we want after the ascent of faith without any actual conversion whatsoever. Protestants and Catholics alike deemed that the antinomian heresy in the 1630s.
First, scripture confirms we are saved, have eternal life, shall never die, that we shall never perish, that no one can snatch us from God's hand, and that we are sealed by the Holy Spirit. Scripture also says we were bought at a price, that our bodies are not our own but are God's, that our bodies are a temple of the holy Spirit, and that Jesus is in us and us in Him, and that we are children of God, a new creation, and co-heirs with Christ.. So even if we wanted to lose salvation, we aren't our own anymore. Second, Loss of Salvation Theology (LOST) is not found anywhere in scripture. It always requires the same degree of eisegesis that Calvinism does. These are predominantly people who are philosophizing and engaging in a negative inference fallacy, that if one can believe and be saved, then they can un-believe and be un-saved. It's simply not Biblical. Third, the implication of LOST are anti-Christian and anti-Biblical. If we are saved and can lose salvation, it renders the term "saved" a misnomer (and implies no one alive is actually saved). If one has eternal life and loses eternal life, then it wasn't actually eternal. If God's word says "NO ONE" can snatch us from God's hand, and LOST people say 'actually, someone can snatch you,' they're opposing God's word. If I can lose salvation, then it indeed implies that Jesus's sacrifice was insufficient to save, which is opposed to scripture. To imply that I have to maintain my salvation or persevere to the end to be saved is works-salvation, which is opposed to scripture. LOST is equally as as bad as Calvinism, and both are antichristian.
All I know is that the Greek word translated 'believe' used repeatedly in the gospel of John (and associated with salvation eg John 3:16) has an ongoing inference to it. One of many pro supports scriptures of eternal security is that we receive eternal life now not when we go to heaven it is a present possession, that is it is a present reality. The emphasis is a life of obedience and fruitfulness, If I understand the doctrine of Justification by faith, we are not guilty because of our trust in the finished work of Christ. Therefore having been Justified by faith we have peace with God. Being Justified is an act of God Soley due to the finished work of Christ. Thus how can one undo what God alone did by bringing one in a state of justification? Repent means a change of mind. I was also taught this "once saved always saved" thing, but when I turned off the TV and read the Bible, I found something very different. You are saved by grace. But faith without works is a dead faith that cannot save you. If your faith is dead, and you are not in Christ, how will you not be one of the ones that fall away? Did you think that the great falling away was talking about fake Christians? I did, but then I also found that false Chrstians are not "falling away", they are on the rise. The falling away are saved Christians that fell into the pattern of the world and gave up - perhaps because they thought they were once saved always saved! I had to re evaluate the American Christian tradition of telling people to invite Jesus into their hearts, and say a prayer and you are saved, and there is a pre trib rapture, and once you are saved by grace you cannot ever used your own free will to renounce that faith. You didn't trade your free will for your salvation did you? These are all hard facts to reconcile, think on it before you just fall back on "what every pastor on TV or UA-cam" says. I did. Pray on it. It took me months of study to find what I find true, and this video is the closest I could find to what I now believe. This is the narrow way. Not works for salvation, but certainly not dying in sin with a dead faith either, denying the blood that bought me.
This is a “straw man” argument because the real argument isn’t about someone who got saved and then begins to go around murdering Christians, worshiping Satan, cannibalizing, etc., but about someone getting saved and then smoking a cigarette, drinking a beer, having an affair, etc.. Someone who gets saved according to scripture has been born again, given a new heart and is indwelled by the Holy Spirit who convicts them of sin while their unsaved neighbor who’s never been saved is fine with all of that.

A little humility by both sides is probably in order, because the debate between freedom and determinism goes all the way back to the ice age, it did not start with Augustine's later writings. Even Augustine is bi-polar on the issue (early writings vs later writings). I like the consensus view that faith leads to faithfulness, and you don't want to stop being faithful because you will go down the wrong road and end up in a place of regret. Regret is its own form of hell. For the record, nobody, not Wesley, or Luther, not Calvin, not Augustine, not Jesus Peter or Paul, ever wrote or said "just believe, then don't worry about it, you're in." There are two ways (Psalm 1, the gospels, the epistles, the Didache, the law, the prophets). You either keep the faith or you don't.

This documentary aims to make one believe that one cannot live with the assurance that he is once saved so he is always saved. Rather this documentary takes away this assurance of salvation and focusses on working out this salvation on daily basis. However the examples sought to be given of the early faithful disciples or apostles etc to support the case that once save is always saved was not their belief, are not convincingly presented in this documentary. One has to understand that these early disciples and apostles did not have the canonized book called Bible in their hands to quote or support this belief. The only holy text they had were Torah (first five books of Old Testament) or some fragments of the writings of the prophets who came before Jesus. Moreover, these texts and writing were not even easily accessible to all, and could hardly throw any light on 'once saved, always saved' or 'once saved, not always saved' thought, as this would have been pretty fresh idea after the death and resurrection of Jesus to these disciples and apostles. Now whether we talk about agnostics, stoics, heretics, disciples with different types of pagan backgrounds as against disciples from Jewish background, or Gospels and Paul's letters or letters by others compiled in the form of New Testaments after the said writing s were generally accepted as New Testament books in 200 to 300 years from the from the birth of Jesus, the fact remains that the presence of different point of views are based on ones own understanding of the concept of salvation. Salvation is a matter of faith in Jesus' own sacrifice on cross which definitely came to be not because did something good but due to prevalence of corruption. Yes, faith in Jesus' ultimate sacrifice does expect one to live a life without corruption, however the corruption will take away the salvation that is the result of Jesus' sacrifice is unpalatable. This kind of thought would show that it the corruption is more powerful to nullify Jesus' sacrifice, whereas one needs to understand that it is Jesus' sacrifice that triumphs over all corruption. Otherwise, as @Bob.55 has commented "Loss of salvation doctrine makes an absolute fool out of the Almighty." So, should be just keep living in corruption after we put our faith in Jesus? Of course not. Then, should we live a very cautious life, like walking on eggshells and making no noise? Of course not. Then, the question arise how should we live? My answer. Anybody that says that calvinists don't believe in "free will" should in no way be teaching on the topic. It's the definition of "free will" that matters, there's not just one and the biblical definition of it is the one that Paul and Jesus taught which is aka "calvinistic". Don't believe me? Pharisees are recorded by Josephus as having been "determinists". Paul was a pharisee and he wrote that way. Go look it up. Also Luther and Edwards wrote extensively on the topic and they are intellectually challenging to get through. In no way could you hand wave what they shared in a sentence or two. If you're not going to put in the work to truly understand (which applies to 99.9% people) then don't bother, just keep your eyes on Christ and move on. Paul was a Pharisee in regards to the Mosaic law (Philippians 3:5). The early church believed in free will, as Calvin himself admitted... adding that the denial of free will started with Augustine, who was a Manichaean Gnostic and brought that error into Christianity.

I love how these guys go out of their way quote 1 John but ignore 1 John: "Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. This is works based salvation. Without once saved always saved we would never know if we are truly saved. Jesus said his burden is light and his yoke easy. That our sins our forgotten and that NOTHING can snatch out out of his hand. We are a gift to Jesus by the father and that gift will not be taken away. When Jesus died and was resurrected, all of our sins were in the future. He died "Once for all". And once we call I the name of the Lord and put our trust and faith in Jesus, we are saved. Would you save someone and then throw them back into the fire? Nope. And God is "faithful even when we are faithless". We can rest in our salvation. Amen.

Jesus: "MOST ASSUREDLY, I say to you, he who BELIEVES in Me has EVERLASTING LIFE," John 6:47, and "shall NEVER DIE." John 11:26. There's your air-tight guarantee from the guarantor Himself.

Phil 1:6 is in the context of v.5 fellowship with Paul in the propagation of the Gospel (in case of Philipians financially especially). koinonia (fellowship) of 1:5 includes “all that belongs to the defense and propagation of the gospel.” (“the finishing” of our salvation is glorification of our bodies. But that is not what Phil 1:15-16 is concerned about)
Concerning your verse “you shell know them by their fruit” it is in the context of Mt 7:15 “beware of false prophets”. The outcome (fruit) specific to a prohet is “what they prophesy (teach)”. So false teaching and prophesying (authoritative communication of the Word of God - “thus sais the Lord”) is the litmus test. (calvinists (in application) fall into this category, which is sad and funny in the same time, if you think about it)

I think it is pride to reject the plain word of God that repeatedly warns us about forfeiting to salvation and instead pseudo-piously choose a fake humility that exalts human wisdom over the word God.
I think Paul warned us of teachings like OSAS. in 2 Tim 3: 3-4, Paul wrote "For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine but, following their own desires and insatiable curiosity, will accumulate teachers and will stop listening to the truth and will be diverted to myths." Paul warns about novel doctrines. Calvin introduced eternal security in the 1500s and the Free Grace version of it first appeared in the 1630s with the antinomian heresy. What better doctrine to fulfill my own sinful desires than one that says I can sin all I want, live by the flesh, disobey God and still keep my salvation?

Maybe it isn't what Paul was warning about but it does fit the bill which means you should at least consider that possibility.

Just because the Gnostics had a erroneous understanding of the security of the believer, doesn't negate the fact that the believer is 'kept by the power of God' - and anyone kept by God can not be lost.
What the verse actually says is "kept by the power of God THROUGH faith". In order to be kept by God´s power you have to have faith. And as Paul said, he KEPT the faith (2Ti 4:7). God doesn´t believe for you.
@@D12Min Actually, saving faith DOES come from God - it is both a fruit of the Holy Ghost and a gift from the Holy Ghost. It is this supernatural faith from God that allows us to believe and stay saved.
@@robfowler908 faith is not monergistic. Paul says he has kept the faith, Jesus rebuked people for their lack of faith or was surprised by their faith. Thus, being kept by the power of God THROUGH faith includes a human component and choice.

Calvin also believed in "evanescent grace" which is the idea that one can accept the truth of the Gospel and show all outward signs but later fall away and be lost. He invented that idea because that is what he (and everyone else) observed. Of course this brings us back to the realization that you can't know if you're "elect" until after you die. Not a very practical doctrine, is it? You might as well believe that you can fall away and not be glorified in the end.
Calvin was a lawyer (his education) and not theologian btw. That explains a lot.

It isn't--but unfortunately, people do put a Gnostic, heretical interpretation on that verse. Understood rightly, John 10:27-28 only teaches that Jesus' sheep are actively, presently, listening and following Him in an on-going, continuous sense-this is the condition that is present in that passage. The passage does not teach unconditional eternal security. Also, "snatch"=forcibly remove.
Notice nothing can snatch us out of God’s hand. That implies EXTERNAL. The same goes for Romans 8:38-39. However we know based on many scriptures that sin always separates us from God and that could begin WITHIN ourselves if we allow it. We have a free will to choose everyday if we will serve sin and jump out of God’s hand or serve Jesus and remain in His love.

The book "The Myth of Pelagianism" puts forth the theory that Augstine invented Pelagianism as something to compare his own novel teachings to. In his accusations of Pelagius (who didn't hold to his invented Pelagianism) the focus was on this mythical heresy on not on Augistine's own views. So he hoped, it seems, that his own views would be uncritically accepted by the Church without having to be subjected to the critical scrutiny of a Council. Apparently, as the video points out, since he wrote in Latin, it seems some of his theories collected dust for over 1000 years before Calvin imbibed them.
This misunderstanding of St. Augustine is tragic. No serious Roman Catholic either believes in OSvdASvd, nor do we interpret Augustine as saying so. We hold that he meant all Good things from first from God ~*

With respect, this entire documentary series creates some pretty extreme strawman fallacies about Christians who believe in "eternal life." It's also ironic, because they're saying we support gnosticism (we don't), yet they themselves are more gnostic by definition than we are. They also seem to love to fixate on 'church fathers' for some reason. No one needs to ever study Iraeneus or Augustine.
It sounds like their gripe is with these church fathers, not with Christians who believe in the Biblical phrase "eternal life."
All Christians believe in eternal life. That phrase isn't up for debate. The question, can we know with 100% confidence that we are saved now and that we shall remain in a state of grace until the day we die. In the parable of the sower, Jesus talked about believers that converted with joy then fell away in a time of trial. Paul wrote of his own fears he would apostatize. Because we can not know for certain that we have the gift of perseverance until the day we die, we cannot be 100% eternally secure. But that's just the iceberg. There are also the Free Gracers that believe we are free to sin as much as we want after the ascent of faith without any actual conversion whatsoever. Protestants and Catholics alike deemed that the antinomian heresy in the 1630s.
First, scripture confirms we are saved, have eternal life, shall never die, that we shall never perish, that no one can snatch us from God's hand, and that we are sealed by the Holy Spirit. Scripture also says we were bought at a price, that our bodies are not our own but are God's, that our bodies are a temple of the holy Spirit, and that Jesus is in us and us in Him, and that we are children of God, a new creation, and co-heirs with Christ.. So even if we wanted to lose salvation, we aren't our own anymore.
Second, Loss of Salvation Theology (LOST) is not found anywhere in scripture. It always requires the same degree of eisegesis that Calvinism does. These are predominantly people who are philosophizing and engaging in a negative inference fallacy, that if one can believe and be saved, then they can un-believe and be un-saved. It's simply not Biblical.
Third, the implication of LOST are anti-Christian and anti-Biblical. If we are saved and can lose salvation, it renders the term "saved" a misnomer (and implies no one alive is actually saved). If one has eternal life and loses eternal life, then it wasn't actually eternal. If God's word says "NO ONE" can snatch us from God's hand, and LOST people say 'actually, someone can snatch you,' they're opposing God's word. If I can lose salvation, then it indeed implies that Jesus's sacrifice was insufficient to save, which is opposed to scripture. To imply that I have to maintain my salvation or persevere to the end to be saved is works-salvation, which is opposed to scripture.
LOST is equally as as bad as Calvinism, and both are antichristian.
All I know is that the Greek word translated 'believe' used repeatedly in the gospel of John (and associated with salvation eg John 3:16) has an ongoing inference to it. Hence Martin Luther's epiphany: the just(ified) shall live by faith.

One of many pro supports scriptures of eternal security is that we receive eternal life now not when we go to heaven it is a present possession, that is it is a present reality. The emphasis is a life of obedience and fruitfulness, If I understand the doctrine of Justification by faith, we are not guilty because of our trust in the finished work of Christ. Therefore having been Justified by faith we have peace with God. Being Justified is an act of God Soley due to the finished work of Christ. Thus how can one undo what God alone did by bringing one in a state of justification? I was also taught this "once saved always saved" thing, but when I turned off the TV and read the Bible, I found something very different. You are saved by grace. But faith without works is a dead faith that cannot save you. If your faith is dead, and you are not in Christ, how will you not be one of the ones that fall away? Did you think that the great falling away was talking about fake Christians? I did, but then I also found that false Chrstians are not "falling away", they are on the rise. The falling away are saved Christians that fell into the pattern of the world and gave up - perhaps because they thought they were once saved always saved! I had to re evaluate the American Christian tradition of telling people to invite Jesus into their hearts, and say a prayer and you are saved, and there is a pre trib rapture, and once you are saved by grace you cannot ever used your own free will to renounce that faith. You didn't trade your free will for your salvation did you? These are all hard facts to reconcile, think on it before you just fall back on "what every pastor on TV or UA-cam" says. I did. A little humility by both sides is probably in order, because the debate between freedom and determinism goes all the way back to the ice age, it did not start with Augustine's later writings. Salvation is a matter of faith in Jesus' own sacrifice on cross which definitely came to be not because did something good but due to prevalence of corruption. Yes, faith in Jesus' ultimate sacrifice does expect one to live a life without corruption, however the corruption will take away the salvation that is the result of Jesus' sacrifice is unpalatable. This kind of thought would show that it the corruption is more powerful to nullify Jesus' sacrifice, whereas one needs to understand that it is Jesus' sacrifice that triumphs over all corruption. Otherwise, as @Bob.55 has commented "Loss of salvation doctrine makes an absolute fool out of the Almighty." So, should be just keep living in corruption after we put our faith in Jesus? Of course not. Then, should we live a very cautious life, like walking on eggshells and making no noise? Of course not. Then, the question arise how should we live?

Anybody that says that calvinists don't believe in "free will" should in no way be teaching on the topic. It's the definition of "free will" that matters, there's not just one and the biblical definition of it is the one that Paul and Jesus taught which is aka "calvinistic". Don't believe me? Pharisees are recorded by Josephus as having been "determinists". Paul was a pharisee and he wrote that way. Go look it up. Also Luther and Edwards wrote extensively on the topic and they are intellectually challenging to get through. In no way could you hand wave what they shared in a sentence or two. If you're not going to put in the work to truly understand (which applies to 99.9% people) then don't bother, just keep your eyes on Christ and move on. This is works based salvation. Without once saved always saved we would never know if we are truly saved. Jesus said his burden is light and his yoke easy. That our sins our forgotten and that NOTHING can snatch out out of his hand. We are a gift to Jesus by the father and that gift will not be taken away. When Jesus died and was resurrected, all of our sins were in the future. He died "Once for all". And once we call I the name of the Lord and put our trust and faith in Jesus, we are saved. Would you save someone and then throw them back into the fire? Nope. And God is "faithful even when we are faithless". We can rest in our salvation. Amen.

Concerning your verse “you shell know them by their fruit” it is in the context of Mt 7:15 “beware of false prophets”. The outcome (fruit) specific to a prohet is “what they prophesy (teach)”. So false teaching and prophesying (authoritative communication of the Word of God - “thus sais the Lord”) is the litmus test. (calvinists (in application) fall into this category, which is sad and funny in the same time, if you think about it)

I think Paul warned us of teachings like OSAS. in 2 Tim 3: 3-4, Paul wrote "For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine but, following their own desires and insatiable curiosity, will accumulate teachers and will stop listening to the truth and will be diverted to myths." Paul warns about novel doctrines. Calvin introduced eternal security in the 1500s and the Free Grace version of it first appeared in the 1630s with the antinomian heresy. What better doctrine to fulfill my own sinful desires than one that says I can sin all I want, live by the flesh, disobey God and still keep my salvation?

@@philipmurray9796 SInce you can't find free grace or eternal security among the Church Fathers, and Free Grace didn't appear until the time of Anne Hutchinson, it is by definition a novel doctrine. Maybe it isn't what Paul was warning about but it does fit the bill which means you should at least consider that possibility.
