Thank you for the video. Definitely helpful. I brought 3 of the MQ. 1 BG 4000 which i had to send back. Started binding upon reeling. A tatula 2000 MQ, which i use for perch and small spinners. No issues and love it on a tatula rod. The last one, tatula 4000, just got it in the mail, with a bent bail wire. Debating on getting a stradic when i take it back to get it replaced. They are great reels, light, smooth but all that doesn't matter if they dont work or last.
I have two ballistic MQs and I never thought about this issue so I had to check. After examination there is very slight play. I wouldn’t call it a knock. It’s not audible. I’ve had my MQs for a few years now and I love them. I use exclusively daiwa spinning reels and shimano casting reels. Just a personal preference and a braid to leader guy.
I have a bunch more expensive spinning rods, but I do very much enjoy this 7'1 MH Fast. I'll move up to 15# braid to a 12# leader where I need a bit heavier/stronger line, and when I can do a job with spinning vs. casting, I'll go with spinning every time. I also have the non-ags Elite spinning in the 7'3 M, extra fast (Howell - shakey head/underspin) and absolutely love that rod. I have a couple AGS spinning rods and enjoy them too but they're kind of a headache being extra careful with those guides (although I've never had a problem with them). You talked about somewhat diminished sensitivity but on par for price point but imo that softer tip (which I love about these rods) kind of covers for that dimished sensitivity because that tip offers tremendous feedback while deflecting bottom when dragging. I haven't felt regret in purchasing these non-ags models. I think they're great, and not just for the price point!
Just checked mine. I just got mine in May and haven’t used it hard and do notice what you are experiencing with yours but it doesn’t click as much as yours. Most expensive spinning reel I purchased is my Shimano Vanford 3000 and I really like that reel.
I have a few dozen exists and a handful of the certate and no knocking on any. I just tested. Must be something with the lower end mq reels. Interesting
Nice video! Thanks for the review of the rod and reel! I don't currently have any Daiwa reels, but will definitely keep this in mind. Thanks as always for sharing some good information. Keep up the good work! And as always, #PunchFishing rocks!!!
Shopping for a new spinning reel, looking at either the tatula MQ, or the Shimano ultegra. It's going on a custom 7' ML spinning rod (NFC x-ray blank) I've tested a few reels and it balances perfectly at that 7 oz range. What reel do you suggest in the 150-200 range?
@@PunchFishing wait this is a thing?? i would love it but......I already got it and the tatula but again handle play i thought i was the only one thinking about selling it and getting the vanford but scared lol
You're not alone to feel knock on a Daiwa reels. It's not only about MQ body. I bought a Fuego lt this spring and after one day of use, knocking appeared. I then exchanged it and the second did the exact same thing. I just returned it and still stuck with my old Sienna RE
I have a Vanford and the 1st gen Tat LT reels and still happy with them. No issues for me yet. No play in anything. Bummer on the MQ's. I sorta don't like the profile look of the MQ body but that's secondary really.
Great video always look forward to your gear reviews. I wonder if it’s the ZAION-V body that they are using in the lower end models that doesn’t hold the gearing tightly together, unlike the Exist and Certate use the standard ZAION.
That could be an issue for the new MQ reels, but the Kages are made with the original Zaion material. So that would be what is causing the Kages to knock. And I have noticed the same thing on some of my JDM Zaion body reels. My 2018 Caldia LT reels developed this same knock Brian points out. For some reason Daiwa reels lose some of their tolerances and that is leading to excessive play in the gears that you feel in the handle.
I have several Daiwa Procyon LT reels and all have far less handle play then my Shimano reels. I have Stradics, Ultegra, Nasci, and Sahara reels that all have the play you're showing with these new reels. A little disappointing to see from Shimano, but again seems like most brands have similar issues, but at least both Shimano and Daiwa have no other issues to talk about. They stay smooth over time, with exception of Nasci that feels a little geary when retrieving hard lures. I think most these issues can be solved by adding a thin shim on the gear side. I had to do that on a brand new Penn Battle 3 DX, it was way too sloppy from the get go. Cheers
I have 5 of the elite bait casting rods and for 190 (including Omnia discount) they are hard to beat at that price point. I do prefer the reel seat on the newer model quite a bit more. Great rods
Maybe I’m just lucky haven’t had any issues with my tatula mq lt reel. I checked it as well and it’s buttery smooth. The fact you have 3 different models doing it is definitely concerning.
This is speaking to me as a free-rig rod. I often fish free rigs in grass and the Medium spinner I’ve been using is underpowered if I start picking up significant slop.
Brian what we need is a Review of Rod Lines at Price Point like $200 $300 $400 $500 and Unlimited what are the best Rods in each price point for value and as you say Punch Above there Price. TC
Alconite rings are fine, but I wish spinning rod manufacturers would put tangle free guides on all their spinning rod builds…the tangle free guides are superior to the outdated guide frames of yesteryear….I’d imagine it’s a cost issue why all spinning rods aren’t built with tangle free guides today…gotta keep costs low for low/medium priced spinning rods. About the reel knocking….I don’t have those two reel models of Daiwa, but I have a certate and a couple older model non-monocoque ballistics…no knocking on the certate, but there is some play/knocking on the ballistics….I did modify the reel handle on my older ballistics (added ball bearings instead of shims to remove handle play, but slight frame/body knocking is still present, but it really doesn’t bother me…the ballistics are still as smooth as they were the day I bought them 5 yrs ago)…..startup inertia on my old ballistics is superior and quite noticeable compared to my 18 stella J series reel….the lower gear ratio of the ballistics and an air rotor add to the easier startup inertia.
i agree with the rod. mostly. but it lost a few fish with treble baits. otherwise single hook stuff was great. sensitivity was soso. i think action overall is great.
I'm thinking of getting the 7'1 with tatula mq, but his knocking is concerning. I've heard more stories about dry and grinding daiwas than I'd like to.
I have the big top water/spinner bait/chatter bait rod baitcaster in the old model and I’m not crazy on it I think I’ve only had it out 3 times maybe a few more times out and maybe try some different reels on it I’ll start to like it we’ll see
Good review, it's obvious you are a knowledgeable fisherman and I appreciate that the video was to the point and did not drag on for a long time . I don't have any of the new Tatulas yet , but I've been happy with this previous gen that I own
The knocking sound is fairly common on daiwa spinning reels. I have some LT reels that also knock when retreiving. Once a reel gets some usage, that's usually when it gets more loose and has play in the handle and rotor. Like someone mentioned above, its a tolerance issue. Sometimes a ultra thin sim will help. Sometimes it makes it too thight. Shimano spinning reels seem to have a slightly better tolerance with their gearing. None of mine are as noticeable as my Daiwa's.
Even some brand new Tatula MQs knock straight out of the box. Super annoying, I’ve opened all of them at the shop. Almost 60-70% knocks. I got one that doesn’t knock as much. Hopefully the Stradic FM is a good reel. So I can replace it with the tatula out.
THAT TATUTLA REEL LOOKS SO MUCH LIKE A 21 CALDIA LT. ALSO, YOU CAN GET A EXPRIDE FOR 190 IN JAPAN AND I SERIOUSLY DOUBT THE TATULA EIITE IS AS GOOD AS EXPRIDE.
Seems the examples you give for the knock is any of the Mono reels built using non metallic frames. Also hate the foam grip on rods, They are built for holding junk Ie dirt, fish slime, Fish stink. Thanks for the video. I don't hear much talk of the 6'6" and 6'8" Tatula rods. Any thoughts?

Brian, have a knock in my Tatula TW 80 it happens when I wind the reel fast. It's inside the handle side.

That pretty much describes all of my videos.
I have 2 Daiwa tatulas (100hs,and CT) both have the same knock,it's annoying compared to my Shimanos,or Lews. Thanks for the great review!
Thanks for watching!
How does that rod compared to a diawa rebellion??
I wonder how it compares to the St Croix 7'1" MH spinning rods, and the Loomis 843s SJR rods.
How would you compare this to the Victory? I love shakey head fishing but didn’t like doing it on the victory. Was far too whippy.
Which victory?
mine also do the same thing i would love a fix for the reel play
Nice warranty on the rod. Sure wish other manufacturers had a similar reel handle on some/more of there versions. Have a great weekend!
Thanks 👍
They do make 1 spinning rod with cork split handle. The 7'6 hair jig/neko rod.
This is speaking to me as a free-rig rod. I often fish free rigs in grass and the Medium spinner I’ve been using is underpowered if I start picking up significant slop.
I forgot to mention free rig! This rod could absolutely do it.
The new Elite's are so much better than the previous version. Looks way nicer, too.

Have you tried the same rod with the ags guides?
I have not, they didn't exist when I bought this originally.
I have the Procyon MQ LT and I have no knocks. Yet.
The reel seat on the new ones are also thinner than the old...much more comfy.
i agree with the rod. mostly. but it lost a few fish with treble baits. otherwise single hook stuff was great. sensitivity was soso. i think action overall is great.
Wired question but what do you use to clean your rod Handel ?
Just a damp magic eraser
That rod would look nice if it had cork handle on it better than that form or rubber handle
I don't understand the thinking behind the EVA foam..it kills sensitivity.
@@BottomLineBassin2wrong
I am wondering if It might be lack of grease causing this. Daiwa’s are often known to be shipped fairly dry..
I highly doubt it, to me it's more of a tolerance issue.
Is Throrne Bros still a service center for Daiwa? Maybe take them in and have them tell you what’s up with them.
Its a powerhouse rod

Yeah maybe the Zion frames are the culprit?
can you throw a non weighted fluke on it?

I would say the windbuster bends deeper down into the blank, this thing has more of a traditional action.
