  • The suburb was named after James Oatley, a convict clockmaker, who was granted land on the George River. Today, it is a riverside suburb with a village atmosphere, natural bushland, walking trails and panoramic views.

Thanks for your complimentary comments and our apologies for not replying sooner, but we wanted to see if the high hopes we initially had for Oatley, coupled with your remarks, might have meant a good many viewers. We’ve even checked out the 2023 census and seen that the suburb has something over half of over thirty fives, which UA-cam analytics tell us are the people who are watching our video. There is still a challenge even after producing sixty two videos in four years, it is still hit and miss, as to whether people are interested in a suburb. We suspect a number no longer live in many of the areas, or never lived in the area, but their grand parents or parents did. With Oatley not taking any through traffic by road, but through traffic by rail, does this affect the number of viewers? It has indeed scored a first with one of our viewers not knowing where it is. Other comments we make maybe of interest.

Always love your presentations. So informative. Didnt know where Oatley was situated, or anything at all about the suburb. It's great to learn new things about the lovely city of Sydney. I especially enjoy the very early years and how
the colony began to grow. Great work.

Congratulations you have scored a first! I must say thank you for your magnificent compliment which in its own way is unique. You are the first person to admit to not knowing where a suburb is, and still watched it. Your phrase, “I especially enjoy the very early years and how the colony began to grow,” is something we never expected to hear, for UA-cam analytics, have pointed out on several of our videos, that a time line from 1900-1975 is what people are repeatedly scrubbing over. That we think is their time, their parents or grandparents association with the suburb.

Well done again, always great research and interesting history. I've loved Oatley since I was a kid and was employed by Tom Riley from River Rd, just up from the bowling club in 1972 as an apprentice plumber.

Thank you not just for your compliment, but rather your comments on Tom Riley the plumber and bowling club. Our videos become all that much richer, because people like yourself, leave information that add to the pile of nostalgia that people are looking for. That comment, “I’ve loved Oatley since I was a kid,” does that mean you lived there? Your words remind me of a similar sentiment, voiced by a former resident of Arncliffe, and his love for his childhood there.

@@stpeterscooksriver1873 Thank you, I grew up in Sans Souci. I found, quite by accident, on Facebook, Tom Riley's daughter and was able to talk to him again after 50 years. He is 88 and lives on the Central Coast.
