Using the latest “light truck platform” from the Acura MDX, the new, fourth-generation Honda Pilot takes a big step forward in driving dynamics, quality of the ride, and cabin isolation. The top-of-the-line trim only comes in all-wheel-drive, which includes a torque vectoring system called i-VTM4. And a brand new engine delivers respectable fuel economy and greatly reduced emissions compared to the outgoing model.
In this video, I take you through the car, show you what features are offered and how they work. And then I take you on a drive to get a sense of how well it handles, the quality of the ride, and the overall experience.

After being a long time Ford guy, I traded my third Explorer Sport on a Touring. First Honda I have owned. Beautiful vehicle inside and out. Very pleased with it.
Nice review. This is the first one that made me say I'd love to have that Modern Steel Metallic exterior. For some reason it looks super sharp in your video.
Thank you! I'm not sure why the color stands out, but am certainly glad it did.
This is a really well thought out review - thanks for posting. It's the best review I've come across and I've watched many on the Pilot. My 2007 Pilot (353,000 kms) has served me well and doesn't owe me a thing. Purchasing a new Pilot was always on my radar by default, but I wanted to do my due diligence before choosing my next vehicle. I've researched everything from Tahoe to Bronco to Highlander to Subura Ascent, Outlander, etc. Yes, that's quite a range, but I wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything. Lo and behold, I couldn't look past the Honda build quality, service and creature comforts. What I like about the Pilot is the engineering/design of things like the new engine/transmission, stowaway 2nd row middle seat, simple dash layout, head/shoulder/leg room (I'm 6'5"), interior cargo room (flat area with all seats down), low ambient noise, storage areas/cupholders/charging, etc. I seriously considered the Honda Passport, but having the extra passenger/cargo room was something I couldn't do without, which the Passport doesn't have since it's only 5-passenger - though for tall people who don't need the 3rd row it's an excellent option. Regarding trim levels, I didn't need the off-road features of the Trailsport, and the Touring comes with ventilated seats, 20" rims and just a nicer fit & finish. Delivery of my new 2023 Pilot Touring is days away.
Thank you! I hope your new Pilot suits you well.
@@viewsonvehicles Thanks - I picked it up 2 days ago and couldn't be happier. Keep doing what you're doing - it's much appreciated by many!
You got a new subscriber :)... I watched your other videos and I like what I saw. So I start searching for your video which leads me to subscribe. Great auto review videos :) and thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much! I especially appreciate you searching my channel.
I test drove the palisade, Telluride, and while those may have more features, this car is incredibly comfortable. I’m ordering mine soon. I’m getting the Elite as well.
I’m torn between the palisade and this, have you had any Honda vehicles before?
@@alphafiddlesticks5623 i had hyundais and Honda. I still have my 2012 Honda Pilot, I had a Hyundai Santa Fe with issues. Honda is the most reliable brand
@@doc8732 More than say, a Toyota? Was also considering a Grand Highlander.
@@alphafiddlesticks5623 Toyota & Honda are the most reliable brands! You can’t go wrong!
@@alphafiddlesticks5623 Me too. A Honda mechanic recently said that they still haven't solved brake rotor warp issues, and that we would likely have to deal with that if we buy the Pilot. I can't argue with him since I'm not a mechanic. Whether that's true or not is another questions.
I commented that Honda went kinda plain with the new Civic , Accord and Hrv but they will sell because they are Hondas
They did a great with Pilot , Passport and Crv
They squared them off to make them look like a truck again ( prior Pilot looked like a mini van )
I have the Touring, only thing I don't they downsized the gas tank from 19 to 18 gallons
You mentioned you're an engineer. What kind of engineer are you? Love me some engineer allies. Nice review! Ordered one today.
Thank you for the compliment! I'm a mechanical engineer. I worked in both slip controls and vehicle dynamics over the years.
I love your review, thank you
So glad to hear. Thank you for commenting!
I just traded in my 2021 Tahoe RST with 3.0 diesel for pilot after 2 years of use. I can honestly tell you it drives better and quieter than the Tahoe with way more features. Pilot is best in segment IMHO.
Thanks for a nice review, you got my subscription as a result. I like this a lot, and it is currently at the top of my list (with the Mazda CX-90). You are the only reviewer so far that has pointed out that the infotainment will show the trail views even though this is an Elite.
I wish the driver seat had 4-way lumbar though.
Can you confirm whether the 1st row side windows have 2 layers of glass (acoustic glass)? Someone else said it was just one piece of glass, but that Honda calls it acoustic glass.
Parting comment - please don't rev the engine (while in park or neutral.) I doubt many people care how a 3-row SUV sounds. Maybe they care under acceleration, but not in Park. Please? It made me unsubscribe from another reviewer who has 800k sub's it bothered me so much.
Thank you for subscribing! According to Honda both the Touring and Elite trims have "Acoustic Laminate Windshield and Front Side Glass" I do not know whether it is two-layers or a thicker single layer, or anther solution, but this is Honda describes it. EX-L and higher trims get the Acoustic Laminate Windshield, by the way.
@@viewsonvehicles Thanks for responding, I appreciate it.
Great review. Subscribed.
Thank you!
I wish more cars would offer a dash cam function (all they need to do is add a small SSD or something to record the feed of each camera.
Probably best let owner buy their own unit with desired features.
I should have had one years ago but haven't got around to it.
But plan on purchasing new Ridgeline when redesign.
So I have been looking into Dashcams. I would definitely get one with newer vehicle.
Hi again Robin. I'm watching this video for a second time and the weight difference between the bottom trim (4,262 lbs) and the Elite (4,660) is pretty stunning. Do you have a sense as to what options are adding up to 400 extra pounds? I'm surprised at the weight difference (but probably shouldn't be.)
I think that might be between a FWD Pilot and the AWD only Elite. So the biggest single difference is the second drive axle. Hope that helps
But I see you can fix that by removing the back cover and maybe chancing the tailpipe and make them straight?
Those tailpipes bother me. That's holding me back from buying
Wish they had more wheel options and a blackout package for the Elite
Canada has a blackout package I assume they’ll get it here if there’s demand.
Excellent! Where is the spare tire stored? and can a real tire be stored there instead of a donut tire?
Also if the battery dies, is there a key to get inside the Pilot to pop the hood to recharge the battery?
Can the oil be changed without having to jack up the vehicle?
Generally, Honda's have real keys built into the key fob, in case the battery dies. I hope you get answers to your other questions
There is actually a Touring AWD
Great review. I noticed you made a nod to the new MDX a few times. As I am considering both these vehicle, I’d love to hear more of your thoughts and comparison between the two.
Thank you! I personally prefer the way the MDX drives, but the space offered in the Pilot is impressive. I reviewed the MDX Type S last summer, if you're at all interested: ua-cam.com/video/nXwZ_yXQjC4/v-deo.html
I also reviewed the standard MDX when it first came out. I hope this helps: ua-cam.com/video/_7PW6-8A3tg/v-deo.html
Would you say this 4th Gen will be around in 20 years like my first generation, 2004, 198,000 miles on? Last car I'd like to buy. Great review!
Thank you! And I would like to think so. Honda did absolutely nothing to reduce the durability of this new DOHC engine. Power is essentially the same, for example. Same for the rest of the platform.
It still has the J35 V6, the transmissions now are a lot more reliable than 2004 models, and Hondas typically don’t have many electrical issues so it has a good shot of making it that long.
If you had to put this against the Palisade, ignoring some of the palisade’s quirky features, what would be your verdict and why? I’m torn between the two.
hmm... Good question! They both have strengths. Overall, it's a toss up that depends on your priorities. For me, putting Calligraphy against Elite (both the top trims), I would choose the Hyundai. It's a touch quieter on the highway and offers a lot of luxury at a slightly lower price. But the Honda definitely handles better and offers fantastic flexibility for space and more of it. Hope that helps.
I know you didn't ask me, but here are my thoughts anyway :-) Are you considering the new Mazda CX-90 or new Grand Highlander? I'm in the same boat, looking at the Telluride, Palisade, Grand Highlander, and this new Pilot. All of those are bigger than the CX-90, but the Mazda should be way more fun to drive with that luscious straight 6 and mild hybrid (plus double wishbone front suspension.) Also, I would trust the Pilot's 3.5L V6 over the Palisade's 3.8L Atkinson Cycle V6. According to a couple of reviewers, the Atkinson Cycle V6 runs hotter (has higher compression so it kind of makes sense) which is never a plus. And one of those two reviewers is not sure about the 8-speed in-house transmission in the Palisade. Personally I'm not especially concerned about it given the 10 year powertrain warranty. Just keep all your maintenance records and be sure to do the oil changes at the specified intervals, otherwise you could find yourself getting denied warranty work.
Idk? If i should get this or wait for the grand highlander or cx-90
Well, the CX-90 will almost certainly be more fun to drive if the 340 hp trims are within reach price-wise. If you are less interested in the driving dynamics, this Pilot (which has good driving dynamics for a 3-row, it just can't compete with the CX-90) is a great bet, as is the G.H. I will say that the hybrid G.H. drivetrains are more complicated than the Pilot's, and that I would *not* want to get the 2.4L turbo 4 cylinder variant - that's just *way* too much vehicle to haul around with a 4 cylinder engine. Toyota vehicles are great for longevity and reliability (assuming you keep up with maintenance) but I wish they had invested in a new V6 like Pilot did.
In every video I’ve watched about the Pilot Elite 2023, there was no mention of home link or buttons for your garage door. Is there any?
Homelink remote system is standard on EX-L and higher trims. So, yes, comes on the Elite.
@@viewsonvehicles thank you.
I would think an Elite Pilot would have Homelink. My 2000 ACURA 3.2 TL had it. I had to yank it out. The map lights and homelike part started falling. I didn't use it anymore. We have 2007 Honda Ridgeline RTL pickup it has it.
Where do you sit on the 2023 Pilot vs Palisade ?
They're both great Crossover SUVs. It really depends on your priorities. The Honda Pilot has HUGE amounts of space and its all very easy to move seats around to use. And I think it feels a bit better to drive too. The Hyundai Palisade is very comfortable on the other hand and offers tons of features at a lower price point. Do you have a specific attribute that's important? I can try to answer if so.
@@viewsonvehicles Pilot seems like the right one to own. Palisade seems like the right one to lease.
Vert handsome and masculine looking look. Rugged! Good job Honda. Very attractive and linear design overall
Go ahead, hop in the third row bro.
No thanks.
Look better than highlander
Roomier
@@Kanti12311 Highlander has more interior volume - that ought to translate to more room inside if they did their packaging homework correctly.
Japanese brand, but almost all Honda cars are made in the US.
When has the climate not changed?
It's ugly
Have you seen the previous gen? It’s pretty much a minivan 😅
I saw a few videos but only you explained third & second-row seating adequately, all others spend time on electronics. When looking for 8-passenger vehicles, I want to understand the third & second rows.
I just got the elite. Id say it has more leg room in the 3rd row than a sienna. It comfty enough for me but guess it depends on your dimensions.
@@spoofsd9363 Thank you.
