- It’s human to be caught up in the rat race. But how many of us truly want to be in it? At the peak of her career, Sadhana decided to leave behind everything she worked hard for in pursuit of purpose.

i don’t know how to feel about this. i’ve had a client referred to Pro Bono SG and the lawyer assigned to them really lacked empathy when conversing with them. you really start wondering - just because they are of lower economic statues, do they deserve to be treated like that? i hope we see more honest lawyers in the field.
As someone in the legal industry myself, sadly I'm not surprised to hear your comments. In Pro Bono Sg, there are good lawyers like Sadhana who dedicate all their time to it. There are other 'volunteer' lawyers who are assigned to it. Sadly many volunteer lawyers don't have their hearts in it and do it for reasons like increasing their exposure to court work, networking, or just accumulating merit for awards / senior counsel applications. In fairness to the lawyers, the legal industry is cut-throat and often overworked where lawyers charge based on the hour, empathy is not a valued trait in the profession generally. Adding to that, we also have a Singaporean culture which does not really respect Pro Bono work because we're focused on maximising profits. Within the legal fraternity, pro bono lawyers are not really respected unlike other countries where "human rights" or "social justice" lawyers can even become Prime Minister, e.g. see Keir Starmer who specialises in criminal defence work (includes work for minority groups) in UK versus Shanmugam / Edwin Tong who specialise in commercial litigation in Singapore (focussed on having wealthy big businesses as clients). Not knocking either of them but just stating what it is.
I am not surprised to hear this. lawyers here tend to not put their hearts into Pro Bono work - it’s often seen as a self-serving means to an end for senior counsel applications, awards, networking opportunities, or opportunities for more exposure to court work (as junior lawyers in big firms seldom have the chance to go to court until much later). In fairness to lawyers, the profession is overworked and empathy is not a commonly encouraged trait in lawyering even when interacting within the fraternity. Lawyers also bill by the hour so doing pro bono work can feel like it’s taking time away from the time that lawyers already don’t have. Finally, as much as lawyers are well educated in the law, you’d be surprised to know how little even senior lawyers know about ideas such as “privilege”, “intergenerational poverty”, etc, which are social science concepts most lawyers are not exposed to.
@@jbrkjferkjbekjb yea! agree with what you said about senior lawyers too - very sad indeed. can’t say i have much respect for them at all!
Wow, so most Singaporeans have this accent, not just the Chinese Singaporeans. Interesting
It's called a singaporean accent for a reason
Wow ..astounding ignorance
With this mindset , she should consider going into politics.
Huge mistake.
