the show really TRIED to gaslight me into believing Cory and Topanga were the perfect couple meanwhile Shawn and Angela were right there...communicating, sharing and respecting one another and not being perfect but loving each other enough to be real with each other during their 'weak' moments (Shawn saying they both don't have mommies) or one letting the other go in order for them to not miss out on any experiences (Shawn not proposing and Angela keeping that she still loves him from him because he wanted to have the full college experience)

The writers joked about the inconsistency of corpanga's origins in a throwaway line in Girl Meets World, it makes all the inconsistencies funny to me instead of annoying
You could also just blame it on the fact that human memory is inconsistent in general, they were just kids after all in most of the variations of their origin lol
@@prplaj The show complicates this by having the memories be so consistent like ‘when I was four’ and at least for the length of the episode, other characters will cosign this as fact with no variations or discrepancy. Making it feel like the hand of the writer making a retcon as opposed to the character having inconsistent memory. And because this is a TV show, the fact is the first two seasons (before the ‘we met when we were born’ thing) they don’t act like old friends who lost touch, they act like two kids in middle school who barely know each other. If he really went from her best friend to ‘throwing dirt at her for 6 years’ it doesn’t gel with how Topanga acted toward him in those middle school years. The adorable ‘high five’ moment where Cory has that stupidly adorable giggle works because of the newness of it for him, the discovery of it. It’s actually pretty impressive to meet the person you actually end up marrying at 12 but instead of being ok with that being a moment of change in his feelings, the writers felt the need to invent a time far before this moment that Cory was so aware of being in love with her, as a toddler, that he plots to get another competitor for her love out of the way. And that doesn’t read as inconsistency in memory, it yells ‘retcon’ pretty loud.
While I liked Cory and Topanga's relationship for the most part, it just seemed ridiculous that Topanga would give up going to Yale just to stick with her boyfriend in a local community college.
Actually, Cory wasn't the only reason Topanga stayed. It was revealed at the very end of the show that a bigger reason for her not going was being afraid to step out of her comfort zone and fearing that she would fail if she were to go to Yale.
Cory and Topanga are hard to take seriously because the show acted like they’d been in love their whole lives but you see in seasons 1&2 that that’s not true at all. Any damage control they tried to do to rectify that (ie. “The lost years”) didn’t work. The writers should have just let them develop their relationship naturally after season 1. It would have been a lot better that way.
They did but topanga was young she still wanted to be single Corey already knew and affter decades and graduation she did too because cory was always chasing her that time it was the other way but Yale we would have did long distance 😂but they were healthy fighting is normal sometimes they are not toxic just normal cory knew what he wanted that's all..
Wrong!! They definitely had chemistry in that very early episode that they were like 9 years old and they kissed, not to mention that it’s basically disturbing and inappropriate, but aside from that, they had some kind of perverted kissing connection
@@JamesChessman Lol they weren't nine, they were 12. But either way the point is Cory didn't know Topanga very well even if they did have chemistry. Topanga wasn't even sure if she wanted to be with Cory before he officially asked out in the beginning of season 3. While the later seasons blatantly say that they have been actively dating since they toddlers which just isn't true.
The thing that always made me uncomfortable in the first couple seasons was the audience reaction to literal 12 and 13 year olds in bathing suits, kissing, ect. Like those reactions are meant for adults. The wolf whistling especially made me feel super gross
The BMW studio audience straight up acted like the studio audience for Married with Children sometimes. Weird asf for what started out as a children’s show.
I really wished the show had had the courage to continue the weird version of Topanga or at least keep her textured hair. She was never ugly but she was considered "hot" once her hair was straightened and that stayed with me.

I'm so glad the Yale plot line was fixed, but Cory's reaction was bizarre. If my boyfriend had given up an IVY LEAGUE school to stay with me I'd give him an earful and a book about it. I expect him to do the same if I were to.
As someone who is with their high school sweetheart, if my partner got into an ivy league school I'm going with him! And knowing him, he would do the same. If I can get into community college in my town, chances are I can get in at another town 💀
I agree mostly, but Topanga and Shawn were also great friends who really did care about each other. I never got hung up on the kiss because it was on the cheek between old friends.
I've never watched the show but when Caitlin played the clip I was very confused on what the big fuss was about because it was clearly a kiss on the cheek. Idk if it's just some cultural difference or what, but where I'm from a kiss on the cheek is 100% a valid way to interact with your friends with no romantic feelings attached, not just in a sad moment like the one in the show but happy moments, celebrations, or even just casually, like greeting... So them talking about the kiss on the cheek like it was some make-out session made no sense to me
In American media that I've seen friends don't kiss on the cheek. If you've got tv or movie examples where friends have any kiss you can list them. I'd really like to see clips of examples, but it can be hard to find an exact clip.
@@melodyclark1944 There are examples, from around that time. I've seen shows and movies from the early 90s and before that with cheek kisses between friends. I'm fairly certain the show Thirty-something and the movie St. Elmo's Fire have examples. There aren't many recent examples I've seen, though.
i agree that the clip makes it look like it’s on the cheek but i think they shot it vague like that on purpose cause we’re seeing it from eric’s perspective. shawn never defends the kiss by saying it was on the cheek which is why i didn’t treat it as one.
I noticed that on a rewatch as an adult. He even gets up in her face angrily pointing his finger while yelling. That’s aggressive af! Topanga deserved better.
Ohhh I remember and I was not okay when he got that angry in those scenes… especially the one with his dad and his marriage. Like bro, you need to back it up. Allen was a good man.

Ugh, generation of snowflakes. People get upset, they yell. Now you call him a “red flag” in an attempt to paint the loving protagonist as an abuser. The writers weren’t dropping hints that Cory’s a bad person. Y’all took it upon yourself to perceive it that way.
Honestly I’m kinda glad Topanga dated a different guy after Cory cheated on her. She was loyal to him, and she loved him. So he definitely learned to appreciate her more
exactly but it also shows how spoiled both of them were and the fact that cory attacked shawn for having a nice apartment for him and Angela when they're not married. Later season Cory is so disgusting as a character.

I feel like the reason Corpanga's relationship never worked was because Cory never really loved Topanga. At first she was the convenient choice then 'she's pretty'. Then Cory gets too dependent on her, saying she's 'all he's ever known'. That's why he is always rushing their relationship like with marriage, how a relationship is 'supposed to go.' He constantly cheats because he knows Topanga isn't the one, but everytime the girl isn't perfect, he gets convinced Topanga is the one he loves. Topanga falls for his sweet charms and treats his like a support dog or child(blindly ignores his childish antics and puts them off as cute). To Cory, Topanga is just perfect, not perfect for him.
@@xanderkai6353 LETHIMCOOK i mean dude is right, this video literally shows how Cory is majority of the time chasing Topanga for physical things like her ass, sex, or making out.
Yeezus, Topanga’s wardrobe was so iconic. It’s been YEARS since I’ve even thought about some of these episodes and somehow I still remember the exact dress and the exact context of the episode each dress appeared in.
I think there’s a misconception here that when Shawn was comforting Topanga he kissed her on the lips, when actually he didn’t, he kissed her on the cheek. And let’s not forget that Topanga and Shawn had also been friends since very young childhood as well, so she wasn’t just Shawn’s best friend’s girlfriend, she was also his own longtime friend too that he was pretty close to. So I think it does make sense that when her whole world was being rocked and he saw her hurting over it that he would give her a sweet and innocent hug and kiss on the cheek. There was no cheating or inappropriate behavior or lines being crossed here. Just innocent affection between longtime friends who platonically very much care about each other. I think consensual platonic affection should be normalized more.
It definitely comes down to personal boundaries though as well. I mean I can't argue for fictional characters boundaries in a relationship. But it causing drama shows that clearly that it's not something they were cool with.
Well there’s also the problem that it was public display of kissing and it is corrosive to society because it leads to more and more kissing and affection in public until eventually it’s the fall of Rome all over again with orgies everywhere and empire crumbling around their orgies
I think even if he did kiss her on the lips, it would be fine. Me and my partner both have friends of various genders who we kiss on the lips when greeting or saying goodbye. I think we put too much significance on lips that's literally just a couple of centimeters away from an "insignificant" cheek. Both are just body parts. What matters is the intention with which you kiss someone, not the place, and most importantly whether your partner knows the meaning of a kiss you give to another person.
I think I would like them a lot more if they weren’t put on this pedestal of being “the perfect couple that have no issues” when that is far from the truth
one of the main storylines of the whole show is about their relationship and how it has ups and downs. the whole show Is essentially a kids show but educating on life lessons and the problems of growing up and dealing with friendships and relationships. idk how you watch the show and see them putting Cory and topanga as the "perfect couple with no issues"
I think the people resonate with them is that they weren’t perfect and had to grow together. At first very immature and volatile until they slowly turned into the couple they were meant to be. That’s how I think people see it. I prefer Shawn and Angela.

The most frustrating thing about these two is that it's constantly reiterated that they've 'always been able to talk about anything/everything,' and then a very large portion of their problems are communication issues.
I feel like 80% of their relationship is just talking about the fact they've been in love forever. They say that Cory makes Topanga laugh and vice versa and I don't think we see that more than once? If they did more showing then explaining, maybe I'd have been won over. I liked them individually just not as a couple.
That would make a lot of sense, considering how much they seem to have changed her character. I haven't watched the show for a while, so I might be wrong, but I remember she started as spiritual, an outcast, and confident in her unique "odd" self, in her first episode. Then she became a more traditionally beautiful, intelligent, popular girl in the later seasons.
I don't see why they felt a need to retcon it so that Cory and Topanga were together since they were babies. couldn't they just be classmates who fell in love when they became adolescents?
as someone who just got into BMW this year- i swear i feel like im being gaslit sometimes by the show and fandom bc of how much they swear cory and topanga are THE ULTIMATE love story when their whole relationship is built on retcons that destroy the shows already flimsy continuity. i liked them in season 1 but by season 4 they got so cheesy and unrealistic i just tuned their storylines out and focused on whatever eric and shawn were doing. love them individually as characters but im never gonna understand the hype lol
The fans probably think that their relationship is so ReAlIsTiC and BeLiEvAbLe and they'll agree with anything toxic happening in their relationship because apparently that's reality for them.
@@Alexandra-rb7ju The fans are stuck in a bubble of "when they were young it was so adorable" which, yeah, it was, but once you pop it and they get older it reeks of denial and backstories. 25:00 I do want to say, Shawn only kissed Topanga's cheek. Thats pretty innocent, unless they all had a stance that cheek kisses were only romantic, those kinds of kisses are wordly recognized as innocent. And it was one time too. It is a bit questionable why Shawn went to 'kiss her on the cheek' while comforting her, but its not like they were making out.
i haven't seen the show, but, from what i've seen, i'd probably be more suspicious about shawn and cory's relationship if i was topanga. they play it for laughs because "HA, GAYYYY", but it almost crosses the line into actual romance sometimes. also, yeah, it's not that strange to kiss someone on the cheek (where i live, that's how we greet each other) and i wouldn't be concerned. a kiss on the forehead would have made more sense, though.
And I want to add that Topanga isn't only "the girlfriend of his best friend ", she was also one of his closest friends so I don't see the Hugh and the cheek kiss strange at all
I can see why this show was as popular as it was. we saw these two two grow from to kids to adults. its a great showcase of how grwoing up can be full of ups and downs.
I feel like Cory and Topanga in the beginning were very cute, inconsistencies apart, but after the pittsburgh story i didn't like them that much anymore. That whole story just showed me that their relationship was more emotional dependency than love. Every single fight, break up, cheating and getting back together that happened after that could be explained by them being depend on eachother. Everything about them became the same cicle of: Cory messing up, them breaking up, them trying to move on but coming back to eachother even though they probably shouldn't. Their problems (ex: having sex, cheating and even just fights) were just walking flags that they were incompatible and never on the same page. Their relationship became something that lasted out of comfort and not love. Even when they were in college, which is arguably their more lovey dovey era, their relationship didn't change or evolve. It never did, because if it did, it wouldn't be a comfort anymore. Topanga grew and matured, Cory did it as well, but their relationship didn't and it pushed them down. They shouldn't have gotten married because the problems they had weren't superficial, they were rooted in the nature of their relationship.
my sister has been dating her now husband since his first year of university (her second year), and they waited until they were both finished university before getting engaged, which was a long wait since she's a doctor
Watching this back over after not watching this since I was a kid, Cory is legit super aggressive when hes mad! He gets close to you and starts pointing and shouting like naaawww 😭
He IS a man, after all. He is too tame and sweet in other situations, being borderline feminine, so it is good that he can stand up for himself when needed.
Every sitcom from this era had continuity eras. In the streaming era this happens less because people literally watch blocks of full seasons. In syndication, which this era of TV was written for, it was common for things like full relatives to show up and suddenly disappear and not get mentioned again. Because in syndication things are rarely watched in order so as long as things made sense within an episode, how much season 3 retconned season 1 if they thought it made a good story was pretty much ignored.
@@TheDawnofVanlife you are not wrong and i think that limited a lot of shows of the time even though it was the nature of shows like this. its clear they were not desgined to be watched more then once(unless you caught a random episode on a rerun while channel surffing or something) and every episode in order.
I'm still upset at Shawn for telling Cory to lie to Topanga about his kiss with Lauren! Like I know Shawn had good intentions, but that was a bad idea, especially because of all the times Cory has cheated on Topanga previously.
True but shawn we all know guys like that very rarely unless the guy is a family man or just more mature they are going to say lie we have grown men still lie to their spouses rather than explain the truth they lie and then it comes out making it worse. .

I just felt like they were more interesting relationships to me, especially because some Corpanga plot lines annoyed me a little and I wasn't the biggest fan of Cory in general
Agree 100%. Corey was just an annoying person. He was spoiled, and whiney and his problems with Topanga seemed so superficial. Shawn and Angela were much better characters overall and when they came together they were even better.
Wdym he was whiney. The only time he was really whiney was the few times when him and Topanga broken up with each other and oh my gosh I see it now 😢@@SocialExperiment232
I'd love to hear your thoughts on Shawn and Angela - I don't think they were toxic, so maybe not in this series, but in general, cause I honestly prefer them to Corpanga. Also, one thing that I thought was weird when I watched the show myself: they have this whole moment that's supposed to be subversive and cool (I think?) because Topanga asks Cory to marry her, meaning it's the girl asking the guy, and after that, we get all the drama - and the resolution ends with Cory proposing to Topanga. I just find it weird that they essentially took that moment away from her by bringing up a valid point against their marriage (the age), pretending that the point was a different one, and then having a happy ending where the roles are reversed. And in Girl Meets World, Topanga references Cory's proposal, even though her own proposal was arguably way more iconic. I'm not calling the show misogynistic or anything, it just seems like a strange choice is all.
I also don’t really think they were toxic. I think they were children who had their own traumas. However, when alcohol wasn’t involved they actually spoke to each other. They communicated much better, they had no cheating scandals, and Shawn loved her enough to let her go and be with her father. He didn’t propose because he knew she missed her father so much, and he knew that she would do the same for him, which she did when she broke up with him, so he could fully experience college and college dating. They should’ve ended up together compared to the couple that had all these inconsistencies, and Topanga was always giving up things for Cory and Cory would always make the fact that they’re not having sex an entire personality trait. Oh, and the cheating…numerous times.
@@NyikoDoris exactly!!! shawn and angela definitely had their struggles but one thing for sure is that they *always* wanted the best for each other and wanted to look after one another, whether they were together or apart.

@nitely2345 Um what? You realize that parents don't have to be abusive to their children for their children to not have their parents issues. lauren and cory had SO much chemistry... dont get me wrong i love cory and topanga but i think if they dated for like half a season it would not have been the worst thing. it would also have let us truly see cory with another girl since he only briefly dated other girls and also had no chemistry with those girls.
I don't know what kinda chemistry you're talking about. She was such a sleazeball for what she did. Cory is too nice by not telling her to go away. He made it very clear he had a girlfriend and she still decided to kiss him. She was so selfish by only caring about her feelings for a boy she knew for half a day and all of one night. What they could've talked about, I don't know. But from what I saw, none of it was what you call "chemistry." She basically pulled an Ariana by getting with someone who's seemingly in a loving relationship. That's low and I have no respect for her. I don't care if she has feelings for him. When she met him, he was dating Topanga, yet she still chose to pursue him as if Topanga isn't important now since she inserted herself in the picture. If their progression was slow and they started off as just friends, I might accept it if they ever dated in the future, maybe after he and Topanga have a fight where they break up again and mutually decide to see other people since they're still young. But she made Cory a cheater by pushing her lips on his because she has feelings for him.. this is like liberal logic. Feelings matter more than facts. I despise it all and anyone who does it.
For the most part I didn't really care about the inconsistencies, the only one that really bothered me was when they changed their first kiss (and yes, I find their first kiss problematic in that it was non-consensual). Also yes, please do K.C. and Brett next, they were such an interesting couple.
to be fair, it's normal that she'd mature and grow out of some of her quirks she had as a young girl, but it would've been nice to see more of that old weirdness make a comeback occasionally or be meshed in with her a "new" personality in the later seasons.
@@leilanyx yeah but lets be real, they never allowed topanga to be the geek she was hence why they did the haircut episode to make her more "appealing"
Just gonna be honest, I never saw much of BMW but I liked Shawn and Angela WAY more as a couple. It didn't feel creepy at any point, felt more natural and it was honestly more adorable to me because of how much Shawn changed and let himself be vulnerable around the time they first started dating. Don't know why GMW decided to break them up tbh. You can argue that it's more realistic but for Cory to cheat on Topanga and also for her to skip out on going to Yale for him makes way less sense to me. Then again, I'm also ace and somewhere on the aro spectrum, so I'm extremely biased. It's just that first impressions matter and as someone who didn't grow up watching it or watched from the beginning, the red flags in their relationship is honestly a major turn off to watching the full show for me.
Trina McGee’s comments in recent years (including her appearance on a Pod Meets World episode) adds a lot of behind the scenes context to what happened onscreen. Essentially, the producers did her dirty in the end, telling her the rest of the cast didn’t want her in the last episode (which wasn’t true), so she was written out. And there was also the racism and other types of toxicity she dealt with on-set, especially in regards to how she was somewhat pitted against the rest of them, especially Danielle.
@@cakt1991 That is extrememly disheartening and it just makes me want to watch the show less tbh. They ruined a whole character arc because of some stupid prejudice? Wow.
Exactly! Shawn also never made comments about needing to be sexual with Angela all the time as well, they actually had interests and she was at his level when Topanga was out of Cory's league in s4. She was more popular, smart, and wasn't "weird" anymore.
Yeah they really did give me ick vibes, especially when Cory would only talk about her body n stuff. It reminds me of my last relationship too, my ex would emotionally cheat on me with other people just like the ski lodge thing. They have some heartwarming scenes like any relationship, but there were just too many breakups and miscommunications like,, idk just leaves a bad taste in my mouth
The sad part of “sometimes a breakup is better” is that sometimes no matter how long you’ve known each other or what that relationship means - compatibility matters; they don’t have it in the way that counts. 😅
@@nikkieg158 In that case, I’m glad it’s a ship you are able to enjoy. I know I have some that others don’t. But Corey’s yelling and cheating just gets under my skin. I don’t think he treats her well.
Ok, tbh the Disney thing bothers me. This is essentially stalking. And it sends this message that if a guy never gives up, she'll suddenly realize how much he loves her and give in. In this case, it's Cory and Topanga, and we know they still have feelings for each other. But like you said, they broke up for a reason. And if Topanga didn't want to get back with him because of that, that would have been valid. She didn't owe him anything because he made a long trip for her.
Despite the craziness they went through together Cory and Topanga relationship is truly The definition of love can get through anything if two people are truly are in love.
a lot of the stuff that the show did when the characters were younger makes me uncomfortable, especially the silver mittens episode, when the audience was whistling at topanga in a swimsuit when she's like 12 years old
I think the biggest problem is that (to me) their relationship feels so fake and forced. I understand that the writers weren’t going for realistic expectations but you can still make the characters connection feel real within a high school sweetheart trope. It just feels like Corey loved the idea of Topanga and being in a relationship with her instead of her as an partner/ person. Literally every time they want a sappy moment about the two they HAVE to bring up how they were together since they were kids. It makes it seem like Corey is more into the idea of a childhood friend to lovers arch than their actual relationship. The inconsistencies even makes this worst because it starts to feel like he just saying these random delusions that never happened because he wants to brag so bad about their childhood friends to lovers arch so badly ( even to his friend who he knows struggles to obtain relationships). This yet again makes everything feel a fake and forced. THEN the multiple examples of cheating definitely nails it in the coffin for me. All I know is that if I had a friend in a relationship like theirs and for that long I would be considered lol.
Yeah..he's always talking about when they were kids. What about now? What about the milestones they've reached since then? It's awesome to look back at how long you've been together, but thar can't be the only highlight in the relationship.
I always said how Cory and Topanga were overhyped and extremely toxic and boy meets world fans look at me like I was crazy. They changed how they met about 6 times throughout the show, Cory couldn’t stand her when they were kids & didn’t romantically link until S3, all of a sudden they were in love since they were toddlers? Don’t even get me started on how they broke up after Topanga’s parents divorced “because she no longer believed in love,” and gave up Yale for him. It was hard to believe that they lasted after he cheated on her at the ski lodge.
Lol kids act like that, also it’s a show so the changing how they met isn’t toxic. No relationship is perfect but I’ve known couples who have come back from why worse and are ridiculously healthy. Life’s not perfect and to expect relationships or ppl to be in relationships to be perfect is a fantasy.
@@BigBen7576 okay let the writers say they're suppose to be the "perfect couple" bruh. Cory cheating on her MULTIPLE times isn't mistakes but intentional. They're toxic and when Topanga gets her own success, Cory feels oversensitive or insecure about it.

24:22 to be fair Shawn grew up in an abusive household, he was used to seeing fights, meaning poor social skills but also an understanding of having no say and no voice on things, so when he went to comforts her he was trying his best, he didn’t kiss her on the lips but on the cheek, is very innocent considering that they were friends since early childhood 37:59 the way Shawn imitates Cory makes me think that he’s heard this many times in many different versions 54:23 Cory grew up with a best friend who grew up in a dysfunctional home in a trailer park and still has the nerve to say that everything’s impossible and life’s too hard… yeah
Finally someone said it!! While Boy Meets World was a great show and had amazing characters with really good storylines, Corey and Topanga were toxic asf and honestly should have broken up mid way through sophomore year lol
Idk there’s been WAY more toxic couples. I feel like they kept them together to show kids like, it’s okay to grow apart and come back together cause not every on screen couple that’s meant to be is all sunshine and rainbows. They’re two people with a lot of differences trying to figure themselves out and their feelings for each other. Idk that was my take on it as a kid cause so many shows just keep couples together just for the fan service or just cause they want them to be but Cory and Topanga were more realistic cause they were so on and off and for valid reasons… but that’s how teenagers are. They’re irrational and emotional.
Three, but it made it all the more ridiculous when they had only a scene or two each Michael McKean does a great job playing narcissists btw. It was hard to watch the way he was speaking to his wife.
I don't think they were toxic as much as they were a bit unhealthy. Cory's cheating and Korniness was the main issue. He managed to pull back before he crossed the worst line and generally had decent communication. He needed to be called out better when it happened but he just made stupid decisions. He wasn't a bad guy necessarily and he wasn't a bad boyfriend so much as he's a stupid boy prone to getting carried away. I think better communication was all they needed. Especially Topanga telling Cory how she feels about his emotional cheating tendency.
I loved Cory’s parents in this show. I was sad when they weren’t showing up as much in the later seasons because they felt like such an integral part of the show for all the characters
I think that Cory and Topanga's relationship was soured by all the unnecessary drama. It literally made me afraid of getting a boyfriend in high school LOL
I’m glad they weren’t portrayed as a perfectly healthy couple the whole time. They got together so young and it would have been super unrealistic and a real disservice to their journey if they hadn’t been allowed to make mistakes and grow from them. Yeah, in real like it’s not fair for Topanga to have to wait for Cory to reach her level of maturity, but it is realistic. They had to change and grow as they got older and that’s going to come with a lot of pain and discomfort, but it’s so sweet that they were able to keep the bond of their friendship throughout and use it to get them through the growing pains.
I do love their ship, but its really weird how early storylines related to sex and intimacy came up. And then the college girl predating on Corey (he still is partially at fault in the big picture there bc he was in a relationship and chose to entertain the idea of accepting the college girl's advances, but I think its also important to highlight that ick there)... and rewatching it, the moments where corey after like he was being deprived of something bc Topanga wasn't ready for that level of intimacy really triggered memories of an abusive ex of mine....
the thing that got me the most was in one of the last seasons when they were fighting and they said “this is our first fight” like what?? they had broken up multiple times before this (once because he cheated on her) they had had multiple fights why were they trying to pretend they were perfect
Personally it might just be me, but I don’t think the continuity is that bad, we’re just learning more about them, often it’s the second season of a show that Sets up the rest of the show and from season two onwards everything about their relationship since they were kids is pretty consistent, learning new things about them as we go along, peeling back different layers, but all in all, they met when they were kids and hang out, but then once they got to middle school, Corey started treating Topanga differently because she was the weird kid until he realised how great she really was, this is very normal to have friends like this and I think it makes sense for her Corey and Sean to have all been friends since they were little, I really like this storyline about the show and it’s pretty consistent throughout the whole thing, I think most shows have some plot holes in them, but personally I think all things considered, the show did a pretty good job.
Yeah, it's definitely a thing when you watch the show back as an adult that you realize how much Cory and Topanga's relationship wasn't exactly great haha. For me, the true heart of BMW will always be Cory and Shawn's friendship! Theirs was genuinely one of the most beautiful, strongest relationships I've seen on screen to this day, platonic or romantic. *They* were the true soulmates, and that's not an exaggeration nor a shipping thing; they just understood each other and were consistently mutually there for each other in a way that gets me all emotional just thinking about it. That said, on the romantic front: Shawn and Angela all the way baby! ^__^
@@juli8288 Everyone mentions that, it’s the first thing anyone says about Eric that his character drastically changes. The actor has said that he wanted that change and preferred it, so I don’t mind and he’s also the funniest character on the show and probably one of the top three or five characters on the show to fans, so I think he’s doing alright.
Wow, the writers really should have made a lore book for the show. These two have apparently met for the first time eight times. I guess, love is beyond time and space.
love this so much haha, thanks for the dedication - i def want kc and brett, they are my faves, I'll especially never get over the fact that when kc got to be in her dream fantasy life she was with brett, like please kill me that's so sweet
Ok, my head-canon for the lost years is basically that Cory was in a phase where we wanted to be "cool" and treated Topanga that way mostly bc of peer-pressure.
The inconsistencies make me laugh as I’m sure when the series was bingeable via DVD/streaming the writers were probably like oh damn they’re all gonna figure out how bad we planned this thing lol
I remember watching BMW all the way through this time last year and I was like WTAF THEY WERE SOOOO toxic personally I feel like Corey was the main issue in a Lot of the problems they had. It ERKED me to no end how DUMB he was being.
As a kid I always seen them as relationship goals. But as an adult who is currently in a toxic relationship (but trying to work on it) I can see the red flags
Their first breakup was so weird to me. Like, Topanga was pushing for it, but then they kept talking about how he broke up with her. If they both did the same thing, it’s not really either of their faults, but Cory took all the blame for it? Anyhow, I think a lot of their problems were his fault, but that breakup was obviously mutually beneficial.
I wanna say THANK U 4 showing the inconsistency of timelines in this relationship, I had been scratching my head over and over thinking “maybe I’m nuts” but u confirmed I’m not thank u 4 showing.
them changing their backstory on how they met every single time annoyed me so much. that first episode where they meet is still canon in my heart, i hate that the showrunners tried to make them a couple since they were practically toddlers. why would they retcon so many important moments for them? is the episode where they finally get together just not canon anymore? like??? what?????
23:55 i don't understand why eric immediately interpreted this interaction as romantic. yeah, maybe it's a bit weird but shawn was clearly comforting her because she was upset and i don't think that it's that weird for friends who have known each other for YEARS to kiss one another on the cheek to cheer them up. if i were eric, i would've asked shawn about it in private and then told cory, but i wouldn't have assumed that topanga was cheating on cory. seriously, i don't get why a kiss on the cheek is seen as bad.
the fact cory kept saying ‘get away’ and ‘no’ when Topanga was trying to kiss him for the first time. and they allowed it. Such an uncomfortable scene.
All of the inconsistency comes from Cory. I assume it is because he doesn't really know when they first met. I assume he alters the length of time they have known each other to suit the story he wants to tell to the person he is talking about. My issue with their core relationship is how often it is Topanga forgiving Cory for his hurting her. It comes across as "Topanga is more mature" so it is her job to do all of the emotional labor.
The wolf whistle sound effects when topanga showed her bathing suit caused me physical pain

Season one Topanga’s hair was SO cute, straightening her curls was a crime.
It’s because her Danielle’s Mum would spend HOURS braiding her hair and when she became a regular it became too much
@@kristinmartin2899so then it was naturally straight? So she didn’t straighten it but that was popular at the time flat irons were popular in the 90s 00s
No it's not naturally like that, I braid my hair sometimes and when I unbraid it looks just like that.
The writers joked about the inconsistency of corpanga's origins in a throwaway line in Girl Meets World, it makes all the inconsistencies funny to me instead of annoying
what episode was that from
You could also just blame it on the fact that human memory is inconsistent in general, they were just kids after all in most of the variations of their origin lol
GIrl meets first date. She jokes about all the consistencies, she even got mixed up with one of Cory and Shawn’s moments
@@TheDawnofVanlife I treat this kinda show just same as SpongeBob, they are inconsistent, like every episode has its own universe and continuity
While I liked Cory and Topanga's relationship for the most part, it just seemed ridiculous that Topanga would give up going to Yale just to stick with her boyfriend in a local community college.
She didn't, Pennbrook is a straight up university, one that Mr. Feeny respects and later attends and works at, it's just not Ivy League like Yale.
Actually, Cory wasn't the only reason Topanga stayed. It was revealed at the very end of the show that a bigger reason for her not going was being afraid to step out of her comfort zone and fearing that she would fail if she were to go to Yale.
It's literally just a show calm down

@@Lazlinez Like most people going from high school to uni?
Cory and Topanga are hard to take seriously because the show acted like they’d been in love their whole lives but you see in seasons 1&2 that that’s not true at all. Any damage control they tried to do to rectify that (ie. “The lost years”) didn’t work. The writers should have just let them develop their relationship naturally after season 1. It would have been a lot better that way.
Agreed, it was always back and forth between them. They couldn’t be happy for long without something happening. It was too much.
I loved it! I bought into the lost years explanation

The wolf whistling especially made me feel super gross
this whole show feels weird to me, maybe cause I had my first bf at 17 but even then, we didn't have that much relationships drama at school
The BMW studio audience straight up acted like the studio audience for Married with Children sometimes. Weird asf for what started out as a children’s show.
Exactly, it was so gross the way they cheered and whistled over little children.

Right? I Saw it was on the Cheek, that's not a big deal
i agree that the clip makes it look like it’s on the cheek but i think they shot it vague like that on purpose cause we’re seeing it from eric’s perspective. shawn never defends the kiss by saying it was on the cheek which is why i didn’t treat it as one.
I don’t remember Cory yelling like that when he got upset about something. That genuinely scared me. Cory was a walking red flag

I think we put too much significance on lips that's literally just a couple of centimeters away from an "insignificant" cheek. Both are just body parts.
What matters is the intention with which you kiss someone, not the place, and most importantly whether your partner knows the meaning of a kiss you give to another person.

And I want to add that Topanga isn't only "the girlfriend of his best friend ", she was also one of his closest friends so I don't see the Hugh and the cheek kiss strange at all
Yeah, kissing a long time close friend on the check and hugging them to comfort them is not weird. And Topanga appeared to be totally okay with this.
He even kissed her cheek later on in the series and I just thought it was a cute friendship moment
Exactly he looks at topanga like a sister literally they were like his family he took it harder than they did during the breakup 😂

Shawn and Angela were superior. And you’re so right, this ENTIRE SHOW, not just Cory and topanga’s relationship was riddled with continuity errors
Every sitcom from this era had continuity eras. In the streaming era this happens less because people literally watch blocks of full seasons. In syndication, which this era of TV was written for, it was common for things like full relatives to show up and suddenly disappear and not get mentioned again. Because in syndication things are rarely watched in order so as long as things made sense within an episode, how much season 3 retconned season 1 if they thought it made a good story was pretty much ignored.
because they had to do anything to sell their story while shawn and angela effortlessly was better
@@TheDawnofVanlife you are not wrong and i think that limited a lot of shows of the time even though it was the nature of shows like this. its clear they were not desgined to be watched more then once(unless you caught a random episode on a rerun while channel surffing or something) and every episode in order.
The main problem with the errors is definitely S1 and S2
I'm still upset at Shawn for telling Cory to lie to Topanga about his kiss with Lauren! Like I know Shawn had good intentions, but that was a bad idea, especially because of all the times Cory has cheated on Topanga previously.
True but shawn we all know guys like that very rarely unless the guy is a family man or just more mature they are going to say lie we have grown men still lie to their spouses rather than explain the truth they lie and then it comes out making it worse. .
But ultimately the decision was up to Cory and he made that choice.

I liked them as a couple but I must honestly admit while watching the show I was way more invested in Shawn and Angela, and also Jack and Eric.
I love the show, but sometimes I really wish Shawn was the main character
Right, because Mr Rider Strong would always show up on set and put a lot of these actors to shame
I'm not calling the show misogynistic or anything, it just seems like a strange choice is all.
angela was so patient i envy her
I found them to be a more realistic couple. They both had attachment issues to work through.
It was only toxic when Shawn was drunk.
@@NyikoDoris exactly!!! shawn and angela definitely had their struggles but one thing for sure is that they *always* wanted the best for each other and wanted to look after one another, whether they were together or apart.

after hearing ALL of this, it’s no wonder poor riley had no communication skills or the ability to see others’ perspectives. these two walking red flags showed her this warped version of love and relationships and that’s what she knew. in a weird and twisted way, gmw is kinda brilliant because it shows what happens when two people who are codependent and selfish raise a child together. almost like a cautionary tale.
Man y’all are too much. Having two loving parents is enough. Nobody needs their parents to be perfect and as kids were just grateful our parents are trying and didn’t abandon us in an orphanage. Man this world is ass backwards and people are hella ungrateful and spoiled.

@nitely2345 Um what? You realize that parents don't have to be abusive to their children for their children to not have their parents issues. Yea honestly they had more stuff in common and they actually talked more.
@@alllittlethingzz plus it's clear Lauren was at his level compared to Topanga that always seem like she was settling for Cory

Despite the craziness they went through together Cory and Topanga relationship is truly The definition of love can get through anything if two people are truly are in love.
a lot of the stuff that the show did when the characters were younger makes me uncomfortable, especially the silver mittens episode, when the audience was whistling at topanga in a swimsuit when she's like 12 years old
the way Cory yells at people is hellish actually i hate it so much
I just hate how close he screams in the women in his life's face.
sorting the chapters with the correlating theme music is so satisfying

I forgot how bumpy their relationship was
Yeah, it's definitely a thing when you watch the show back as an adult that you realize how much Cory and Topanga's relationship wasn't exactly great haha. the fact cory kept saying ‘get away’ and ‘no’ when Topanga was trying to kiss him for the first time. and they allowed it.
