- That is the longest road in America?
Most people have no clue that there is such a thing as the pan American highway.
It's an enormous mega project that sought out the connect Alaska with Southern America, in one continuous stretch of roads to allow for efficient transportation and resource distribution.
However, despite being constructed in the 1920's and 1930's, the Pan American highway still remains incomplete.
It's like 99% completed, but there is one stretch of the road that still has not been built, and may never be built.
The tiny incomplete region is called the Darien gap, and it is a zone of approximately 66 miles where no drivable roads exist that connects Panama to Columbia
There are a few reasons for this.
The Darién Gap is a challenging region to conquer.
Its dense forests, mountainous terrain, and marshlands have made road construction expensive and environmentally detrimental.
Political consensus for road-building has waned over the years, with attempts in the 1970s and 1990s halted by environmental concerns.
Traversing the gap on dirt bikes has been done, but virtually any other vehicle would not be possible.
An alternative to the highway is a river ferry service, which saw a brief stint of operation but closed due to being unprofitable.
So, while the Pan American highway stands as one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects ever undertaken, the Darién Gap remains a testament to the challenges and complexities of connecting the Americas through continuous roadways.

The Darien Gap is an area that is positively lethal.
Yeah, but all those illegal aliens managed to make it through there pretty easily.
Thousands of migrants have crossed it in the last 4 or 5 years with kids and pregnant women and moved north until they reach the USA.
@@JoseJimenez-mx8so So what. Birth rates have plummeted in the United States. We need more people who will have babies here.
@thenaturalmidsouth9536 you are right but my comment is about the resilience, determination, fear and hope of all those people who emigrate from South America and have to cross the Darien jungle. About the decline of births in America, have you noticed how many people in the age to bring babies to this world decided to switch sex and unfortunately they don't reproduce? Man with man and woman with woman = zero babies.
@JoseJimenez-mx8so those people have always been here, and they don't reproduce. You can't blame low population growth on trans people. It's straight people who aren't having children nowadays and that's their choice, their individual freedom to choose. Elite reactionary right wing types don't get to make those decisions for other people. Although they'd like to, because nobody hates freedom more than right wingers.
Find out to be BS I’ve seen Mexican tunnels. These people can make it happen.
Search for great footage of Landrover's attempt in 1972.
The longest road in the United States is U.S. Route 20 from Boston to the Oregon coast.
Yes, but he said America
Thank you for that. Appreciated.
Refugees travel Darian gap everyday.
Mostly on foot.
Panama was a province of Colombia. The Darian Gap is in Panama. The last thing Panama wants is a road the Colombian army can use to reacquire Panama.
My nephew is attempting to bike. He wanted to do it all-in-one trip but unfortunately made it about half way for his biking companion had a family emergency but he still plans on finishing the other half. He's not quite sure how he's going to handle the gap.
That's pretty cool. He should post his journey onto UA-cam.
The United States will never allow the Darian Gap to be completed because there is a fear that the completed road will allow cattle with Mad Cow Disease to come up to the US from South America.
I’m sorry you think that the US is the reason why it’s not been done
There's a kernel of truth there, but it isn't mad cow disease. It's FMD, Foot and Mouth Disease.
US has all the mad cows it needs already ?
I raced from Cartagena to Buenos Aires in 1988 in a road rally
Because the US taxpayers haven't paid for it yet.
An attempt by the Kingdom of Scotland to occupy the Darien Gap in 1698 lead to Scotland's financial ruin. As a result of the Scottish collapse, England seized the opportunity to corruptly annex Scotland for England. A very bitter time for a great Gaelic Nation..
Also full of Narcos
Mostly environmentalists have stopped this
Land Rovers crossed it. The Toyotas tried but ran out of gas shortly after starting.
Its so cheap (about $100) to get into a ferry in Colon, Panama and go to Cartagena, Colombia
Little fact,Scotland tried in the 18th century to start a business ferrying goods across the darian gap, from the Caribbean sea to the Pacific.England put countless spanners in the works so it failed and nearly bankrupted Scotland.
If it’s not completed then it doesn’t matter
Awesome editign
"editign" 🥴❓

Thousands of people Traver’s the Darien gap daily on their way to the US border.
The only reason why the road has not been finished is the drug cartels period.
The longest road in America does not run through Panama!
281. The freedom park at Canadian border is special.
Space Karen should throw some of his money at finishing it, instead of destroying Twitter.
What a stupid comment! The era of all mighty american influence in Panama is long gone! Actually the era of american influence in the world is gone... A dwarf with a huge debt has no relevance!
I thought the pan American Hwy was thru
California Hwy 1
There is absolutely no political will to motorise the Darian Gap. This area is essentially the bottleneck that impedes US bound migrants 🤓
Longest road in America is Reisterstown rd in Maryland. Runs all the way from Africa to Israel...
The road to critical thinking & secularism.
NOT ONE CONTINUOUS STRETCH OF ROAD.
Nah it's 100% politics, money has nothing to do with it
The Chinese people can make bridges with control posts , electronic surveillance, etc , etc
USA doesn't want to finish the project , they prefer america separated and manipulated
Technically there is only one road in America…. 🐰
So.... what about going over the water? Building across similar to the keys
I rh8nk it is also because US violated the sovereignty of Colombia; a democracy after the US, that can threaten US invasion there.
Colombia; even after losing Panama to US, still helped the US with World War II and North Korea.
So if this video proves one thing, it's really not the longest road because you can't drive it
IN AMERICA!
I just noticed that majority of Mexico is mountainous
🤭
The biggest problem is they need to bring professionals like myself and not have locals do the job like on the excavator they show . that dozer could rip through that in minutes compared to him spending the day😂
Say how long the road is in 2 sizes
And will never be.
Its in Canada
When are people (and AI) going to learn the proper use of apostophe? Should be 1920s - 1930s, with lc "s".
He said America. This is NOT America!!
America = North America and South America. 35 countries.
@@mountainguyed67 nope America is a country not a continent north and south America are continents
@@genewilkerson8528 You’re thinking of the United States of America… Or USA for short.
@@mountainguyed67 nah it is called America
@@genewilkerson8528 I live in the United States, which is located in the America’s.

Umm? In America?
There's a lot of cocaine down there funds the Mexican restaurant
Might be just as well😊
You said longest road in America Canada and Mexico is not America so the answer would be I-40 and I-80 run parallel cost to cost
Lol, Mexico and Canada are America.
If you say "America" and mean US, it doesn't mean, that Continent can't be called America.
CoAst!
Exactly he said the longest road in AMERICA not the United States in America
@@user-iv2dj5so4d ok my bad
Context and common sense are useful.
Unfortunately you don't have enough common sense to realize the context.
Also, you're wrong. US-20 is the longest road in the US.
🐐
The name America was made in 1507 way before the United States and based in the Spanish expeditions and refer to all the continente noth central and south america.
Amorique is origin of word America and refers to western most France and goes back to the time when Andelusians of the Iberian penninsula traded with mysterious mariners from the west.
A lot of it depends on context. We get that fairly early in the short.

Alert this is a lie.
Longest rude in America is named Karen.
And you would be the dumbest person in the comment section, because you used the uneducated Karen comment. And what's worse, it had nothing to do with the original comment.
BS.
you also forgot about allowing more migration towards the USA!!!!!!
The title said America, not north and South America. Be highway 2 and 20 for the real answer
The country is not named America. It is the United States OF America. Even the name tells you that you are wrong.
@@user-wn5tu8mf5o it’s called the United States of America ( North America) also known as America. There’s nothing else with America in it as a country. Question was the longest road in America? United States is called America-American flag. So it goes to highway 2 and 20 from Maine to Washington coast.
America is not a title. We're the United States! That should have come up in the first or second grade.😢
@@user-bj8se2me5o says a person talking on an international communication forum. "We" are not from a specific country. English grammar (either US, Australian, Indian, Canadian or British) is pretty clear that the preposition "of" means a part of, or decended from. In either case, the actual name of the country on North America whose capital is Washington DC is the United States OF America. Words have meaning. Just because you were indoctrinated into the fallacy of "American exceptionalism doesn't mean everyone was, or that anyone should have been.
East to west is route 9 longest
