This is actually super entertaining to me and wish there was more videos like this. You know, for a guy who supposedly is terrible, Mr G sounds pretty damn good to me. James Carter is just in another galaxy and there is no problem in recognizing that.

I don’t think most people who dislike Gorelick think he can’t play the saxophone, I think they are perturbed that the music he chooses to perform on it is, to be generous, bland and corny and that due to its mainstream popularity young people coming up may assume that jazz is bland and corny. Everyone is welcome to enjoy anything they want.

    Perdeu?
    Quem?

Kenny’s sound is great and although his technique is killer, and great lines…once James starts his whole repertoire of tonguing, altissimo, and effects…well nobody does that like him (all’s conversation with elders) Wish there was more to the video!

I first heard Kenny' G' (Gorelick) on Jeff Lorber's early fusion albums 70s -early 80s where he played with with amomg others Denis Chambers on drums. He had a dynamic, hard driving bop - inspired style back then before he became 'Kenny G' where the music wasn't as demanding as the funk influenced fusion of the 70sand 80s . Nice to hear him returning to his earlier jazz roots

@@davidczajkowski5956 yes I've watch this video, this is just him shredding what he knows and let circular breathing do the magic,no jazz articulation or whatsoever like the other cats does it such as bob berg,Eric marienthal, chris potter,.. he used to do fusion line on Jeff Lorber album tho, but didn't do it now as his audience change,
But like you said, his style is more on classical based , should've just classify him classical music, rather than this "smooth jazz" or jazz in particular

Yo. I had no idea. And the rock means NO IDEA that G could shred. That’s insane. Guess that he is just a shrewd business man making albums that people would buy instead of stuff that jazz musicians would want to hear. Good on him.

  • @mmrobb73

Kenny G easily could have played that third riff, but he knew going against an icon like James Carter was heresy, so he gracefully bailed. I saw Kenny G play tenor sax on Arsenio Hall in the very early 1990s. He TORE UP that tenor. I was stunned because everyone on the planet knew Kenny G was a hack. While he doesn't have the chops of James Carter, he can improvise, bop and shred very very well. Instead of going the traditional route -- and struggling every single week to pay bills -- Kenny went for the gold, American style. By the way, making a soprano sax sound great (and not shrill) is harder than hell. It's the bagpipe of saxophones.

James Carter, the King of Saxophone Techniques a la Rahsaan Roland Kirk, is in the 🏠 with music performer, composer and businessman, Kenny G.
After a financially successful career of offering up to the general public commercial simplicity, musically speaking, Kenneth Bruce Gorelick has successfully mastered the Art - make that the Science - of " ... Win (ning) Friends And Influenc' (ing) People", to steal Dale Carnegie's book title.
Donald J. Trump's Ghost writers called Kenny G's marketing savvy and/or cunning "The Art Of The Deal".
Consequently, let's hail Mr. G. as one of the most skillful entrepreneurs to have tapped (into) the Music Industry - his gliding smoothly from hors d'oeuvre of Generic (Fake) Jazz - Lullabies, Nursery Rhymes, Hymnals, Christmas Songs, Soft Pop, RnB with a tea spoon of Funk and Fusion - to Organic (Real) Jazz 💪
    MY Thoughts, exactly!

You should be able to put together all that technique and produce an enjoyable piece of music, that's simple and enjoyable to the layman and not just to the music buffs. That's what Kenny does. Using his limited skill in the instrument, he is able to come out with more enjoyable music that's appreciated globally.
I have heard a few hardcore jazz saxophonists and I feel they tend to side too much towards technique forgetting to produce music that's enjoyable. Of course, when it comes to mastery over the instrument, we have to give it to the Jazz saxophonists.
