I have a 2022 Wilderness and can give my 2 cents worth here. First, great video. I've had BMW X5, Audi Q4, Lexus RX. My Wilderness with roughly 30k miles on now knock on wood, has been the best vehicle I've owned for a couple of reasons. First, the all wheel drive system is very very good. Been through several snowstorms in Northern Vermont/Northeast, never once gotten stuck. If anything, I cannot count how many times I've literally driven past Jeep Grand Cherokees who were stuck (for whatever reason). Ground clearance is on par with a Toyota 4 Runner. Its comfortable, its quick out of the gate. Has all the bells and whistles I could ask for. Put rear seats down, plenty of room for bikes, skis, etc. Really anything. Finally, and i cant stress this enough, again coming off of several European cars, this car is very and I mean VERY easy to maintain. I havent had anything go wrong with it but things like tires, maintenance, relatively inexpensive to repair/replace compared to many others out there. Japanese build quality speaks for itself as well. I've been reading that Subaru will be coming out with a complete re design in 2025 of the Outback model lines so I'll be curious to see what improvements they launch. Subaru also appears to listen to their consumers on what we want, need in our vehicles and they put them in.
Cant remember must be at least 6-7 years ago. I’m convinced, once you hit 70k miles on BMW’s someone in Germany presses a button and oil just starts leaking out of them. I’d never go back. Eyeing up the new Lexus GX Overtrail now which looks absolutely insane. Off road capability, Lexus fit and finish. Reliable to say the least I’m sure.@@ryanb8736
Thx for a great review,. As you say " I want an off-road vehicle, but I don't need an off-road vehicle" niche; I reckon the Outback Wilderness provides an excellent compromise...
Traded in my 2021 Outback for the 2024 Outback Wilderness. Loved them both just wanted the Wilderness cause they beef it up more. Great car, took a nice long road trip to Utah with it back in Oct 2023. It ran and drove like a dream.
How was the fuel mileage? My 23 outback non turbo premium gets into the low 30s on the highway but I feel it is a little underpowered especially with more people in it. I was thinking of upgrading to a wilderness but I heard the turbo engine does not get the fuel mileage that Subaru claims it does
@@ddphotoadventure2657 the mileage wasn't bad. But then again I don't drive the posted speed limit. But still wasn't bad. You feel that turbo kick in when you step on the pedal. Depending on how you plan on using it, I would upgrade to the turbo. It's still a Subaru so you can't go wrong. And it looks so good.
Hey thanks for this video. I’m getting my wilderness outback at the end of November just in time for the Canadian winter. I’m excited about it my other vehicle is a Land Rover Defender and with all the car thefts over hear I needed a vehicle that people aren’t really stealing and is safe for me to drive in all weather and this was the best vehicle. Again thanks for this in-depth review. Cheers
Really enjoy your videos. Especially on the Wilderness. Had an Outback loaner for 2 days and fell in love with it. I really liked how it felt like I was driving a car as opposed to an SUV and all the room inside for both passengers and cargo. I test drove all of the Outback XT’s and liked the Wilderness best. I like the looks and it seemed to ride and perform the best , this video convinced me to get one in Geyser, Love the color with all the black and gold trim. To me the Wilderness rode the best ,felt the fastest and I liked the seats better than leather . I liked the higher seating position for ease of entry/exit and even for loading my bikes in the back. Very pleased with the OBW.
Thanks for the great review! I recently bought a 2024 outback wilderness.I had a 2023 Subaru outback onyx xt loved the car but I like camping so decided to trade it in . I can't wait to take it out with my A Liner camper!
Excellent review. I appreciated the off road comments and the detailed observations based on your experiences. Just purchased (first Subaru) 2024 Outback Wilderness. This review adds to my understanding of expected behavior. I appreciate that you have no wasted/noisy dialog. Well done.
I would love a Crosstrek Wilderness with a 2.5 Turbo but I don't think those are available. Maybe they are, I'm still learning. We just moved from TX to Colorado Springs & a Crosstrek Wilderness would be great 👍
Thanks for the video! been looking at the premium trim, really just care about space for future baby and current 90lb dog daily driving and road trips, premium seems to be good bc of cheaper price than this one
The Jeep was great, but we didn’t use it as intended. No serious off Roading so the outback made more sense as a day today car and weekend warrior for us.
@@robfrasier9412 Yup, the outback isn't the off-roader we want, its the off roader we actually need. Capable enough while still being comfortable day-to-day.
Door tags gotta go,with trails and off reading I woulda been more aggressive on the cladding along the sides and mirrors and around the door handles. Why do car companies put carpet in off-road vehicles, wish they’d put in rubber for easy cleaning.
Great review!!, I like outback for great visibility, good interior , comfortable seats, lots of space in second row and in cargo area. Only think I did not like is that engine sounds like 20 years old car. Engine is very loud, my 07 camry is more quite than outback. Not good for long drive on free way with noise. I feel Forester is more quitter than outback.
My 2022 is a road magnet in ice, snow, and rain. Handles curvy mountain roads no problem. It will match my lofted Chevy 3/4 ton l bed 4x4 in about 80% of the situation s you could be it in. Its a LOT of car for the money. As I tell people: Subaru - funny name, serious ride!
They are not forever and will need to be changed. Still too new to know. Most are claiming 150k, which is terrible. Not cheap. That’s why most stay away.
Just picked up my 24 last week. All I can say about the tags and “black plastic cladding” is “why?” It serves no purpose and makes no sense. So far I’m fairly happy, but there is a lack of storage available which is a penalty for the full sized spare. I have found the front camera useful, but it is no replacement for the Birdseye camera on my wife’s RAV4 Hybrid limited. You didn’t mention the ability to tip the headrests forward, which was new to me in the Subaru and really makes the seating move comfortable to me at 6’ even
You really think it lacks storage compared to the RAV4? I just recently traded my RAV4 for this car and I feel like I have more trunk space compared to the RAV4. I know because my baby’s stroller fits much better in the outback than the RAV4 🤣
@@dannyhoward3437 I can appreciate that, but wouldn’t pay a 10k markup on anything these days. You can get the new Tacos at a discount and Jeep has realized they priced themselves out of the market too
@@GTGarageTalk The Outback's limited visibility (compared to Forester) does not bother you? Between these 2, which one would you take on a family road trip?
I don't feel a significant difference in ride or road noise between outback and forester. However, my wife has back problems, and she feels a drastic difference. She is very comfortable in the outback but not as good in the forester.
I have a 2023 Forester Wilderness in this Geyser Blue and it indeed pops like this video. Awesome color and changes substantially in different lighting
Frame is old technology. They are also known to rot and rust. Also not as strong in accidents too. Plus full frames don’t drive as good as unibody. Unibodies are popular for good reasons. Higher strength and rigidity. Thats why the best off road vehicle known as Defender is unibody. I would never buy a frame vehicle ever again. It’s now 2024.

Had a new 20 TRD Pro 4R, and now have a 24 Outback Touring XT. We loved the 4R mostly, but it was slow, thirsty and exhausting on road-trips. The OB is a much better vehicle for us. Just be honest with yourself about what you’re going to use it for, drive both back-to-back and then decide.
Ordered a 2016 TRD Pro 4 Runner. Had it for 2 years. It was very underwhelming. Slow , horrible infotainment system, poor mpg. Best thing was excellent resale value.
Too much plastic cladding on 2023 and beyond. I have 2022 Premier XT and the plastic trim is much less severe. But I’m looking at a 2024 Wilderness now.
Tags look stupid & not opening rear doors auto sucks!! Also need to light the lock unlock on the door panel so you see where you stand! And be able to shut off permanently the start stop feature it’s very annoying. Otherwise great car. 😅

Subaru Outback Wilderness or Subaru Ascent, for smooth quiet comfortable ride?
They both ride comfortably. It really is about how many rows and how much space you’re after.
