  • The problem solving template I talk about in the video is available for free through this link: www.tommentink...
Don't always grab for the full 6-step problem solving approach - for many daily problems and deviations it's too much effort, you could say that it's "over-processing the problem" 😄
For simpler problems, only diving for the root cause, or just a detailed problem definition might get the job done more than well enough.
Still, I suggest that you learn the full problem solving method, since you'll be informally using it on any problem anyway:
you always want some different points of view (multidisciplinary team),
make sure you understand the problem (problem definition),
see if you need to make some quick fixes (temporary control measures),
understand what led up to this problem (root cause analysis),
put effective solutions in place (implement countermeasures),
and make sure that those solutions are not forgotten in a few months (sustain the changes).
It's just that for most problems, the facilitator can do a quick check if it's really worth the time and effort to fully go through that step or that its goal has already been satisfied.
It takes a skilled person to know which parts of the method can be circumvented.

Your videos and templates have been very helpful with my role as an operations lead

Thanks for taking the time to share that, Geon. Happy to hear that my work is of value to you.
Which videos/topics have been most helpful to you? If you have any topic requests, please tell me. (after the first 20 or so videos, coming up with frequent good and useful topics is almost as hard as making the video 😅)

@@TomMentink Your playlists on lean and six sigma made my transition from an operator to management a lot smoother. Thank you for making these videos. What about a video on Change Requests and Change Control Board?

Thanks again @@GeonQuuin for sharing how the Lean and Six Sigma playlists helped you.
Interesting topics too - I'm not a big fan of 'idea boxes' full of random change request, so I sort of stayed away from that topic, but of course there is also a whole bunch of valuable change lists/request (technical requests, solutions from problem solving, practical improvements, etc.) and good change management is critical for all of them - that is definitely worth a video 😃

@@TomMentink thank you Tom. Hope to see more of your videos.
Just wondered if you have any tips for revealing unrealized problems within new potential customers? Some of our clients require us to explore new markets even. I use 5 whys but it’s time consuming and feels like finding a needle in the haystack..

@@taishihasegawa8380 the first thing I would go to is FMEA - failure mode & effect analysis.
That tool doesn’t go as deep as 5 why’s and is much more useful for identifying potential problems and summarising process know-how.
I don’t have a video on it myself, so it’s probably time to make one 😉
