My favourite moments have been the few times I have been in a music store and someone of this calibre is testing out acoustic guitars. It is a treat for the ears and they are always the nicest chaps.
He was an instructor at the first Steve Kaufman Flatpicking Guitar Camp in 1996 which I attended. He was unprepared to teach and pretty obnoxious all around, which I attribute entirely to a kind of shyness and maybe being out of his element a little bit. I've really enjoyed how he he's mellowed and gotten into the social aspect of things since then. Of course, his playing has always been amazing. His inventiveness sets him apart.
I'm a jazz guy, but I'm getting into bluegrass because it's so honest and direct--no pretentions. David Grier's playing is articulate and driving; he's amazing. (What kind of capo?)
there's a lot of crossover, many bluegrass musicians also play jazz. I find improvising in a bluegrass style more challenging than playing jazz myself, you have less options and have to make a good melody, in jazz you can get away with a lot you can't in bluegrass.
The beauty of the Beaumont Rag is that it is a good song to "individualize" and who better than David Greer? Well Mark O'Connor does an amazing version too - completely different of course.
I just wish he would come out with a book of tablature on his version of this song (and others). I know there is one for one of his later albums but I want to learn from his versions of fiddle tunes like this one.
I have listened to so many versions of this tune and 95% of them are speed picking throwing down as many notes as they can and fairly similar, but Mr. Grier's version is a very creative interpretation. I also enjoy listening to his version of Blackberry Blossom. Keep doing what the other 95% are not.
I’m as huge a fan of Grier as can be. I can’t quite agree with this opinion, though. For example, Arkansas Traveller is never going to work for me, pretty much no matter what is done to it.
@Taylor Evans whoa 😳. I would never have gathered that from Mr Sutton. Now Chris Thile is arrogant both personally and professionally. Met him once and he was an asshole, kind of how I expected him to be. David Grier seems like the type that would engage in a meaningful conversation and never look at his phone
@@Bluelightcheaphotel I've heard that Grier is very generous and kind to his fans. I have also heard that in most other settings he's not that way. I know a guy who ran sound for a show that David was playing on and said he'd never work with Grier again. Speaking of Chris Thile, I had a pleasant interaction with him after a show, but I've heard stories about him as well. His Punch Brothers bandmate Chris Eldridge, however, is one of the nicest and most down to earth people I've ever met. I can't and won't tell the whole story (it's long), but in short he went far out of his way to reach out to me while PB were on tour overseas when I was going through a rough time. I'd only met him once, years before. I'll never forget that as long as I live.
Thanks David for the great music ! CarbiSurfKing at least you were brave enough to try it !!! Not me! Love your playing David ! You are an amazing picker !!
I grew up in Ballad aka snoose junction. Your exactly right David. The state should be pronounced Wash-ing-ton not worsh-ing-ton but that’s how we pronounce it. Sounds like your the successor to Clarence White and Tony Rice.
Billy Bradshaw In settings like this, the most important thing is individual expression, not binding yourself to the melody. Besides, the melody is there. It is outright stated in many places and touched on it others. The foremost thing, however, is that the artist expresses how HE hears the song. In my opinion, this is how it should be, at least with artists of this caliber.
you could almost rename this something else it's got so many embellishments from the original melody...its not really the same song anymore haha cool sound very chromatic...and busy...maybe a bit too busy for my taste...but good none the less! nice work.
Kevin Caissie I don't understand how you can say something like that. Although bluegrass music has a strong tradition and a pretty defined language, it's still important to make it your own and push the boundaries just like Grier here does.
All I learned is how good you are if this video weren't titled Beaumont Rag I would never know that's what you were playing. Less boring isn't always better
Ok...I'll take that home and work on it for the next 35 years
+eighta peach Yep, me too.
eighta peach 35 years? Give yourself a little more credit than that.
okay, 15?
Sounds like what he did.
How's it going?
Clicked like before I even watched because (a) I like to live on the edge and (b) it's David Grier.
This would have even Doc Watson shaking his head. He is so inventive.
What an amazing and unique flatpicker he is. Nobody sounds anything like David Grier.
That's a beautiful version of the Beaumont Rag, so awesome picked by David Grier
"I changed it around to make it less boring."
Just great.
@@abelltube 😂😂
David,
Thanks for posting this really nice variation on what has become a standard.
Fantastic playing and arrangement. It's amazing hoow many different ways there are to play this tune. I used to live in Warshington!
Nobody does this better than David Grier. Saw him at a house concert once....absolutely incredible.
So when I take my guitar, fill the sound hole full of dirt, and convert it into a planter what kinds of plants do you recommend?
Very funny 😂😂😂😂
Boxwood.
absurdly good!

You gotta love David Grier. His personality exceeds his excellent picking.

Dave! This is Ennie. That's a goodern'.
SO well played too! Makes a body want to dance.

Glen Cummings probably an Elliot. Paige makes a similar one that's a lot cheaper.
there's a lot of crossover, many bluegrass musicians also play jazz.

thats by far the best version of this i ever heard, but who am i to know.

Awesome. Still have to visited Werrshington sometime!
10 /10
Your Version of the B Part is SO AMAZING
GREAT !!!
Amazing how it just flows out of him, like it's no effort at all.
Sick! Best version ever.
Really good!
Truly enjoyed it. 😄
Love it man! Thanks!
Great picking Guys👏👏👏👏👏
Thanks for the lesson!
Beautiful B part bro. Piano ringing. Sublime !
Just tried this without the capo in the same key, almost ended up in hospital
almost fell of my chair reading this hahahahah
I tried this with a capo and ended up in a deep depression for weeks
You guys are so lucky. I tried it without a capo and I’m in the morgue.
LOL if that aint funny will kiss your ass
A 4 year old comment is the best thing I've seen on the internet in over a year bahaha good on ya sir!!
fantastic. I will get right on that David.
I really like your take on this great song. I'm trying to learn it right now and it's a pretty slow process for me. But I certainly love your style.
enjoyed...dint need to pick up my guitar....just watched and enjoyed your gift brother....Beaumont is a rag by the way!

"To make it.. [wait for it] ..less boring"
Love onyx black sides of his guitar.
That B part.....my God.....it sure ain't boring anymore!!
I'm pretty sure I could play that slowly if I worked at it 23 hours a day for the next 100 years. I am not remotely worthy. You are a Master.
This mans words "any tune, if you are halfway decent, and you give it a chance... can be made good"

@@budg.6094 do you dance? Buck dance or square dance?
@@budg.6094 His opinion is valid. You’re just admitting you won’t give it a chance.
@@oldtimetinfoilhatwearer I do remember square dancing in school in sixth grade. The teacher made me stand in the corner for misbehaving

this guy is blazed, and is soo good
the Oscar Peterson of bluegrass guitar
Simply the best!!!
I’m not sure what’s more challenging. Playing this or understanding the punchline to that opening joke LOL
Sofistic...Thank you.
I got the left hand and the right hand blues now ...wow
Bryan Sutton is fast, but David Grier has a story to tell.
I just think David has the edge on writing riffs like these that spice up songs.
@Taylor Evans whoa 😳. I would never have gathered that from Mr Sutton. Now Chris Thile is arrogant both personally and professionally. Met him once and he was an asshole, kind of how I expected him to be.

BRILLIANT!
There should be a disclosure: For Advanced Master Pickers Only! Thank you Mr Grier.
So many hints of Clarence White's influence!!! Unbelievable pickin'!!!
He's the best.
So creative
"this is what i came up with to make it less boring"... all of a sudden, a musical genius appears!
Now that is how to flatpick , well done!
What's that guitar hanging on the wall
No name vintage Japanese guitar, probably Teisco del Rey.
The MASTER!!!!
I don't even know how I got here but sweet baby Jesus this guy is amazing.guess I'll just be taking my guitar out to the dumpster.
I think David is the best bluegrass guitar player on the planet
Even when he's being "boring" Grier is still more colourful and tasteful than most .... "so you're the guy!" :)
So are you coming to SPBMA in Nashville this year?
Thanks David for the great music ! CarbiSurfKing at least you were brave enough to try it !!! Not me! Love your playing David ! You are an amazing picker !!
Does David usually pick so close to the bridge, or is it just for this tune to give it extra twang?
Woooooow, woooooow......
Clarence White lives!
That's the best thing I've heard you play. Five, no six stars, check it out! -L-
A fine picker!
Guauuuuu!!!!
I don't care if it takes me 10 minutes… I'll get it! haha
Got it yet? 7yrs have passed😁
Hey that’s my uncle Dave’s Santa Cruz guitar. I would sincerely like to purchase it from you. He can longer play but it would mean a lot to me sir.

That does it dammit , selling guitars tommorow
all that and cool catness too.

The 10 people who disliked this are either jealous or hearing impaired
show off. amazing
great variation on the cross picking section.
why bother with the capo?
Because it's played in jams and with mandolins and fiddles it is easier to play it in D rather than C.
I love David's playing...however, in this case, he has missed the melodic essence of Doc's Beaumont Rag by making it "less boring"...
Somethin to work towards.....
