An Odd Machine | Compaq DeskPro END

- Well this is an odd one. It's a Compaq DeskPro. Not too unusual in itself. However this one as a mixture of old and new technology.
ISA, AGP but an odd FSB for such ports. Even the memory is strange.
But this is the sort of stuff I enjoy learning about. Things that I didn't think we possible on the P3 platform.

P3 with RDRAM is so cool. Even harder to find than P4 boards with RDRAM slots these days. That alone makes this machine special.
I thought it was quite strange as I thought that was only developed for the P4 era of hardware. ECC RDRAM as well!
80186/188 actually is a full featured x86-class cpu. I built a PC out of it that's running DOS. It's basically an 8086/88 with integrated peripherals (PIC, DMA, Timer etc)
The cards in question should be some voice/modem-related stuff.
Indeed they're listed on CPU world. Given the system this machine came out of is no longer being used, it would be cool to do what you did and re purpose the CPU's for some sort of home made system. I know there's a bunch of 8088 projects out there
NFS HP2 started the BlackBox era of NFS! Ofc it's good ;) Also that last minute clutch, I felt it :P
haha, I didn't think I would make it to first place at the end. I need to get it fired up on a faster machine with a gamepad
NFS6HP2 has one of the best music tracks ever in NFS series IMO.
About the hard drive, updating the BIOS to the latest available for your machine may allow the it to recognize the 80gb hard drive and if not it should see the drive as larger than 15GB. I have an older DeskPro from the Pentium 2 generation and i could not use hard drives larger than 8 gb, but after i updated the BIOS and i am now able to use 20GB hard drives which i am much happier with.
Might be worth a shot, although this exact model is a little hard to find info for it seems.
@@thesmokingcap Make sure you get the model info from the BIOS screen and use it when you look for drivers. You may have to view a heap of forum posts to find exactly what you are looking for which may take up a lot of time.
@@BoomBox02 Good tip! I'll checkout the strings
It uses the intel 820 Chipset. 820 chipset used RDRAM and the 815 used SDRAM. The Intel 820 chipset was very short lived.
It seems that way, this model is not very common at all in the lineup of Desk Pro's, almost nothing listed with this chipet
That videocard form factor is called NLX. Only two things are specific to it, one: the exact height of the vga port and nothing else either underneath or above, two: the notch on the bottom left so it doesnt collide with the parallel port if your motherboard has that. I have a deskpro EN and i managed to adapt a geforce fx5200 by cutting a little bit from the pcb and removing all ports except the vga which was luckily on a ribbon cable so i could move it wherever it needed to be. The EN has the cpu socket mounted horizontally and has sdram. Ive never seen or even heard about this deskpro case with this motherboard version. Wonder whats the best cpu yours can take, mine is p3 katmai 600mhz maximum....
It's a very strange card, rather annoying if you want to upgrade the machine. I would be interested to try a faster CPU. I do own a Slotket adapter, but it doesn't appear to work no matter what motherboard or CPU I try and fit.
@@thesmokingcap i dont know how correct i am, but i think slotkets are for celerons only. At least i never managed to get any pentiums to work in them, maybe im just unlucky. However there are slot1 pentium cpu-s around 1000mhz-1100mhz which might work for you. If you stick to nlx cards and not attempt to mod a better one, then my research makes me believe that the best one you will get is the diamond viper v770u which is a tnt2 ultra and rather expensive. In my EN the original 350mhz p2 didnt post when i got it but but a 133mhz fsb 550mhz p3 did. Ive done a bios "upgrade" with the right bios which made the 550 not work anymore but the 350 started working. Power supply connector is also physically atx but the pinout differs a bit so be careful with that if yours ever packs it in. At least on mine thats the case...
@@gaborszucs8935 Humm you could be right re the slotket. I'll have to do some more testing. Also it wouldn't surprise me if the PSU in out if different as the size of the unit is non standard atx.
@@thesmokingcap if i remember correctly, according to my researches the difference in pinout is something about the power good signal being inverted or something. Depending on whats your plan with this machine it may not matter much anyway. At least luckily when i tried a regular atx psu nothing happened. No explosion, but also no POST. I think it might be possible to somehow adapt a normal psu to work. I ended up just buying the correct compaq branded psu from ebay. Are you planning to make any more videos on this pc? If yes i am def watching it! :)
@@gaborszucs8935 Ahh yes, I may need to get a scope or something on the pins to see what they're doing on power up and make some adapter. The size of the PSU will be an issue as it's not a regular ATX style
I think this was a FAX server. I built one like that in the mid-90s.
Chatting with the boss, it was used as a voicemail system for the PABX on prem unit
Interesting machine. It's almost like it was intended to be a server/workstation hybrid. With the RDRAM, it would be edifying to upgrade it to a Tualatin 1.4 PIII with a slocket to be able to run an apples to apples comparison with a Socket 423 P4 using the same memory. It's always been an issue, since most pIII boards support standard SDRAM
It's a bit of an odd machine isn't it. A mixture of older and newer tech
Since it has a 133MHz FSB CPU in there already I wouldn't be surprised if it'd easily take the cheaper 133MHz 1GHz Pentium III slot 1's (compared to the rarer 100MHz FSB ones).
I am curious as well, sadly the only faster slot 1 cpu I own is 700 mhz and my Slotket adapter appears to be faulty. I've tried a bunch of supported CPU's in it and tested on various motherboards, but the machine doesn't POST.
Ide love to get a copy of the modded vc is it downloadable any links? Thanks
I don't know if this matches, but it seems like the same mod. It was given to me by a friend back in 06 or 07, www.moddb.com/mods/ultimate-vice-city-20
@@thesmokingcapthanks for the reply keen to try it out on my p4 gamer I’ve found vc to run the best on that also hi from Aus 👌
@@gelousi Ahh yes P4 and Vice City is a good combo. I had heaps of fun with this MOD back in the day. What part of Aus are you in? I'm in Queenstown NZ
@@thesmokingcap I’m in Melbourne, I don’t think there’s anyone from here that does any UA-cam vids. Ide love to do it but nervous talking on a camera haha
@@gelousi Sorry for the slow reply! My best advise for someone who hates the sound of their voice, is just go for it. I sometimes get messages/comments from people that don't like my voice or content or music. But I make content to share and I enjoy it. So we call just carry on and keep doing your thing. The only youtuber I know in AUS is Philscomputerlab
RDRAN just failed because of cost, It was actualy better than SD / DDR
What what I recall, wasn't it failure prone and ran rather warm? Then again i could be mistaken
Please no more background music.
Hey Mike, gauging feedback here. Was it the music itself you didn't like? or was it too loud? The latter I seem to struggle with.
