- The Pommernlied, also called the song of the Pomeranians, is a song that had firmly established itself in the former Prussian province of Pomerania as the national anthem. It was built in 1851 and goes back to the theologian and poet Adolf Pompe. As a regional anthem in the provincial part of Western Pomerania in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, it still plays a role in regional songs. However, the Pomeranian Song has a far greater ideological significance for the refugees and displaced persons from Pomerania as a reminder of their lost homeland. It is therefore regularly sung at alumni meetings.

This reminded me of a story my great great grandma told me (lucky she lived long enough to meet me)
When she was 8 years old in 1905 her parents took her to see Pommernlied performed in Stettin. She lived in a town called Freienwalde (now Chociwel). They had to travel to stettin to see the performance.
My great great grandma (named Gretel), had a Pomeranian dog named Fritz that she pushed round in her toy stroller. She desperately wanted to bring Fritz to the performance, her parents allowed her to bring him, but he wasn't to come inside.
So she pushed around her pet dog Fritz in a stroller, and she said people all over the streets of stettin were very amused and some were stopping to look at her because they found it very amusing.
My great great grandma said it wasn't a particularly interesting show (she was only 8), but the memory of her dog and the people stuck with her almost 97 years.
Side story: her dog died by jumping out a window after chasing a bird. My great great grandma was 11, she was so upset she never bought any form of pet for the rest of her life again.
Believe it or not my Grandma is also named Gretel and is also from Pomerania… wow.

Mein Großvater kam aus Schneidemühl, er hat nie über die Vertreibung gesprochen, die ihm als Kind wiederfahren ist. Ein viel zu unbekanntes Kapitel der traurigen Geschichte Pommerns. Danke für das Lied meiner Ahnen.

Mein Vater stammt aus Reetz, Kreis Arnswalde. Auf der Flucht wurde der Vater und alle Männer ab 16 Jahren von den Russen abgeholt. Er kam nicht wieder.

Das ist meiner Meinung nach immer noch die schönste regionale Hymne Deutschlands. Meine Oma väterlicherseits (inzwischen 98 Jahre alt) kommt aus Pommern. Mein Onkel singt ihr das Lied jedes Jahr zum Geburtstag vor und sie kennt jede Strophe. Mich rührt sowas immer zu Tränen, was die Leute damals alles durchmachten mussten.❤️
Eine schöne Hymne in der Tat aber die Hymne Ostpreußens gefällt mir noch besser.
Ich kann das verstehen, meine Eltern sind beide in Pommern geboren. Mein Vater wird morgen beigesetzt und hatte sich das Pommernlied dafür gewünscht. Er ist in Lenzen geboren und hat immer bedauert, dass er seine Heimat verloren hat. Er wurde 100 Jahre alt.

fun fact after WW2 many Pomeranians went to Brazil, today in some Brazilian the people speak pomeranian, there are hundreds of thousands of descendents of Pomeranians in Brazil
Pommern und Westpreußen, das Land meiner Großeltern und Ahnen Mütterlicherseits. Über 800 Jahre Deutsche Heimat, davor auch schon von Deutschen dominiert, jetzt ist sie weg, aber sie bleibt weiter in unserem Herzen, auch wenn wir vielleicht als Nachfahren nicht dort geboren wurden.

Meine Familie mütterlicherseits musste aus Pommern fliehen. Meine Oma schrieb in ihrem Tagebuch immer wieder, wie sehr sie die Heimat vermissten und hofften, dass sie eines Tages zurückkehren würden. Mein Urgroßvater hat Kleider und Wertgegenstände im Garten vergraben. Er war so überzeugt davon, dass sie zurückkehren.
Sie haben ihre Heimat nie wiedergesehen 😢😢
Meine Oma, und meine Mutter kamen aus einem Dorf namens Warsin. Die Kreisstadt war Bernstein. Oma hat sehr gelitten, wegen dem Verlust der Heimat. Werde diesen Sommer das erste Mal nach Stettin fahren, auf den Spuren meiner Vorfahren.

My great-grandfather spoke the Pomeranian dialect even though he was born in Brazil. This dialect is practically dead in Europe, but there are some communities of immigrants in Brazil that still speak it

meine Oma mütterlicherseits inn Duisburg wohnend stammte aus Pommern, ist dort mit 15 Geschwistern aufgewachsen, jedes konnte ein Instrument spielen. Oma sang dieses Lied in den 50er Jahren wenn ich in den Ferien bei meinen Großeltern war. Sie sang es sehr, sehr innig und war im Gedanken in ihrer Heimat....................
Instead of arguing why shouldn't we just listen to this beautiful song. The tragedy happened to both nations German and Polish. I was born and raised in Western Pomerania. My family came came here because they have been expelled from their destroyed home in Poland. I don't want to deny the Germans tragedy when it comes to deportations and I assure no one no one is denying German ancestry instead we try to preserve it. Don't listen to Nationalists on both sides, we have to make sure another war will never start. Let's be friends and make a better future for our children.

Well, I have never been to Poland and I don't have plans to go there any time but it's not because that I think that Poland isn't "liberal" enough.

Mein Vater und seine Eltern kamen aus Klein Dübsow, wurden natürlich vertrieben. Ich habe so eine innere Sehnsucht in mir, diesen Ort und Pommern generell mal zu besuchen, obwohl ich in Süddeutschland geboren und aufgewachsen bin. Irgendwie scheinen unsere Gene uns doch zu leiten.....
The melody seems familiar, yet I cannot identify to which one resembles (obviously was one of the heavenly music uploaded in this channel).
Also, the lyrics are wonderful. This music truly does awaken love towards the country. My best wishes for all the people that have the honor of singing this song, may it always bring joy and pride to you all.

So the Pomeranian land was split between Germany and Poland but is that region of Germany still known as Pomerania? And what do the poles call their section?

We merged it with Mecklenburg, calling it Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (Front Pomerania, while Poland got Hinterpommern).

The region right next to the border is called Zachodniopomorskie (West Pomerania) and the region with Danzig is called Pomorskie (Pomerania)
Well, in Germany "Pomerania" is Pommernland- the lands around Szczecin (Stettin), when in Poland "Pommernland" is called West Pomerania, because for Poles Pomerania is actually around Gdańsk (Danzig). For Germans "Polish Pomerania" is West Prussia.
Poles call whole region Pomerania. Historically Pomeranians tribes lived from Gdansk do Szczecin, so thats land is called Pomerania. Pomerania is divided into West and East Pomerania, West is from Szczecin to Slupsk, and East is from Slupsk to Gdansk. Administrative division looks like this: there are provinces of West Pomerania (from Szczecin to nearly Slupsk) and Pomerania (from Slupsk to Gdansk). Why Pomerania province is not called East Pomerania? I think it is because of Kashubians, last Pomeranian nation (other nations was Germanized and became German Pomeranians or Pomerisch; Kashubians are in fact one of West Slavic nations, they are not Poles), Poland wanted them to live all in one province which name was just simply Pomerania.

Mein Opa stammt aus Bornzin, Kreis Stolp.
Er hat nie über den Krieg oder gar die Zeit davor gesprochen
(seine Eltern und Geschwister sind auf der Flucht vor der Sowjet-Armee auf der Ostsee ums Leben gekommen... davon hab ich erst zur Beerdigung meines Opas erfahren... von der mündlichen Überlieferung her, die dann eben den Weg in die Trauerrede fand, würde ich drauf schließen, dass sie auf der Wilhelm Gustloff waren...)
Eine sehr bewegende Kindheitserinnerung: als dann in den 90ern mal ein Cousin von ihm vorbei kam, hatte er handschriftlich den Text des Pommernliedes dabei und mein Opa und er haben versucht, sich wieder an die längst verdrängte Melodie zu erinnern und das Lied zu singen (mein Opa hat - soweit ich mich erinnere - sonst nie gesungen... man hat sofort gemerkt, dass das ein besonderer Moment war...)

Habe eben Ihr Video über das Pommernlied gefunden. Pommern hätte meine Heimat sein sollen. Nun ist Ontario seit 51 Jahren meine Heimat. Trotzdem kommt Wehmut auf.

Pomerania was firstly Slavic Pomeranian, Kashubian. Then it was Germanized and it became German Pomeranian, Pomerisch. After WWII Pomerania became Polish and is Polish to this day. Years of wars and hatred are behind us. Now we are all together in the European Union.
We can live together as friends and develop together, Germans can come to Pomerania and live there, just like Poles come to Germany and live there. There is no need for more wars for territory that would only bring more suffering.
Poland lost its territory after the war, Germany lost its territory. Everyone has lost something. So the best thing we can do right now is to avoid more wars by building a friendship.
Pomerania today is for everyone, not only Polish, not only German and not only Kashubian, but is common, is for everyone!
Yes we should be friendly today and not claim old territories.

Well, there isn't much of Pomerania left within the borders of contemporary Germany thanks to our "liberators": USA/UK & USSR ... and Poland that grabbed the city of Stettin, too although its situated on the western banks of the river Oder.
