This is a fitting end to Iceman's story. He can barely speak, but he makes every word count. He knows he is dying, and he has no fear. He is just focused on doing what's right and having one more good laugh with his friend.
Ironically though he disliked Mav a lot when they were younger because he was a trouble maker. But Iceman would end up bailing him all the time. Mav really found a true friend in Iceman
@@Ironheart73 your right they were once rivals and Iceman thought Maverick was reckless and that thought too much of himself. iceman said in original to Maverick you’re dangerous and foolish, worse then the enemy. It’s good to see them in sequel have a close friendship like brothers and respect each other. They know they are the last among the breed of their generation as Naval Aviators is concerned.
@@scottknode898well said.
It's a trick question. They are both "The better pilot". They are just different KINDS of pilots. Maverick is a hot-head non-conformist exceptionally good aggressive pilot. Just what you NEED in an impossible situation. Ice-man is cold perfection, unflappable, precise and reliable. Just what you NEED in the normal to very difficult situations. You can't afford too many Mavericks, they are dangerous and always breaking things like your multi-billion dollar prototypes. BUT, they are inspirational and you can't make progress without them. Ice-men are the backbone of the service, reliable, affordable and get the job done 98% of the time. IMO :)
Nice observations! I guess thats why Maverick became a test pilot while Iceman became a commander. It suited their personalities so well.
Very well said.
Well though and written. Tom Cruise is my role model as well as Slyvester.
I absolutely agree. Same way you consider how some generals in history tended to be used by a country during a time of war. Just as a example: You had General Patton & Omar Bradley who never ever liked each other in WWII, BUT both realized that they owed much of their respective success to the other.
Historian Blumenson characterized their relationship as “World War II's Odd Couple.” He was undoubtedly correct, for neither commander liked the other, but grew to respect their abilities. During the Sicily campign, Bradley became Eisenhower’s most valued subordinate. From Normandy to the German border, Eisenhower had nothing but praise for Bradley and Patton. However, Bradley was Ike's preferred choice to keep cohesion on the front lines.
Bradley, ever cautious but utterly dependable in Ike’s opinion, directed the American portion of Ike’s broad front advance to the German frontier. Bradley considered Patton profane, vulgar, too independent, and not a team player. For his part, Patton thought Bradley was overly cautious, indecisive at critical moments, and lacking the resolve to follow through when the operational opportunity presented itself. The German counteroffensive in the Ardennes on December 16 produced Bradley’s worst moment and Patton’s most brilliant campaign during a critical crisis. The Battle of the Bugle was almost a impossible situation given how weather/road conditions were terrible, and the need to aid the 101st Airborne before the Germans took the town were paramount to Eisenhower.
Both men's strategies had their pros & cons, but the Germans even after D-Day still considered Patton the Allies best general & a much deeper threat than Bradley given his bold & aggressive skillset (similar to Erwin Rommel & maybe how the Navy views Maverick). Ike just needed to pick the right moments to ulitize Patton's skills on the battlefield while maintaining Bradley's balanced & reliable approach. A trait that was still 97% the backbone of most Allied generals during that time (particularity the British).
It's a shame that both men didn't have enough time to find a way to mend their rivalry after Patton's car accident in late 1945. At least we all can appreciate that both Ice & Mav found the time to acknowledge their relationship/friendly rivalry before Ice's passing.
Well said
That was a great scene, great moment between Maverick and Iceman.
Yeah and even more when you know that Tom Cruise at first didn't wanted to film Top Gun 2 unless they include Val Kilmer in the movie which was not originaly planned
@@_xSneaXx_ Tom Cruise was the one who wanted Kilmer included in the sequel and demanded have him return as the Director didn’t too many of the original cast members or characters in sequel.
DEEP!
I absolutely love that they included Val in this movie. That’s such a classy move by Tom and the producers and it makes the movie better.
Tom said he wasn’t gonna do this movie if Val wasn’t in it
@@silkdragon504 Really? Outstanding! Tom goes up again IMHO. Now he can sleep better I’m sure! 😂
Tom fought to get Val in this movie
for those who didn't cry when this scenes came out, you haven't watched the 1986's Top Gun thus you didn't know the story behind this "moment"
I teared up a little and during Icemans funeral. Everyone laughed in the theater though after Iceman asked who is the better Pilot and Maverick said let’s not ruin the moment
2:24 It's my own best scene... 'The Navy needs maverick. The kid needs maverick.'
This scene was heartbreaking for so many reasons. Val Kilmer's real life struggle with cancer gave it so much authenticity. Maverick having to see his friend and one time rival reduced to typing words on a computer screen when he was once so full of life, cockiness, and energy, while also sensing his own impending obsolescence was poignant. And of course, it's heartbreaking for long time fans to once again be reminded of how distant the halcyon days of the golden 1980s have become, when our country and our lives seemed to be in a much better place and there was so much hope and optimism for the future.
I agree 100%!
Very well put, miss the 80's here as well...
😢
Agree too.
Great comment my friend, thankyou.
That was so awesome that they put a sweet touch of a cutting onion “who is the better pilot, you or me?” “This is nice moment, let’s not ruin it” We all smile again after teared eyes
God knows I cried at the beginning to the end of this scene. These are my heroes. I never made it to become a pilot… It was a privilege to have this scene
It was a privilege. Nothing beats Tom Cruises ego breezing in a destroying every scene. "Lets go to Mach 10", "Nah lets make it 20, just because I can. And when i get back I'll fuck the lot of you - girls and guys" Top Gun class looks aghast. And, scene.
When Tom Cruise cries, I cry too. What an awesome movie this was!
It's time to let go....for Goose... When I understand that meaning, It brings tear to my eyes.
viper told maverick that since top gun 1.
I thought Mav let go when he threw Goose's dog tags into the ocean.

@@cnoto4466 Tell me about it... 😣
Heck, the rescue swimmer in the first film warned us to that effect.
Two equal fighter pilots for the same cause. Priceless. It looks like it was a great reminder of how the two of them worked so well in the first Top Gun movie. Teeeeennnhut! There's two of the best fighter pilots on deck!!
I cry 😭 countless times whenever I watch this scene conversation between Maverick and Iceman especially this part ..
The Navy needs Maverick
The kid needs Maverick
That's why I fought for you
That's why you still here
😥😥😭😭😭
This scene felt very real, very authentic. Watch any documentary where they get older warriors together telling their stories and the seriousness, the joy, the bond of brotherhood is there. Yes they were rivals - they’re fighter pilots, one of the most A-type in control I’m-the-best jobs in the world- especially when you’re a young 20-something hotshot ready to take on the world. And then they go through something together that changes both. And 30+ years later they can be serious men dealing with their fates one minute and grinning rivals joking about who’s the best pilot. Watch anything with WWII carrier pilots & thats what you see.
This scene ranks as one of the all-time movie theater experiences where I lost it emotionally, especially since I never thought I'd get to see it.
Touching scene between 2 old school Naval Aviators. 👍
This is the best example of 2 men that were able to put the differences and ego a side for the grater things!!! a good Friendship!!!
It takes a monumental amount of acting chops to deliver emotions like this, specially non-verbally like Kilmer is doing. Not gonna lie: I teared up seeing this on the movies.
Nice Moment! Val Kilmer a brave man
This scene made me cry. Was so awesome
Man the feels and how far these 2 legends came from the first movie. Very sad what happened to Val Kilmer but they used it to their advantage and made the story stronger as a result. Would have loved to see the other characters like Viper, Slider, Charlie, etc. Would it have worked? I guess in the context of the story those old pilots moved on and lived their lives after graduation
FYI.....The character "Warlock" (Commander of NAWDC) was with "Iceman" & "Maverick" in the 1st T.G. They all trained & graduated together and were there for the skirmish in the Indian Ocean/ Straights of Harmouz. The character "Warlock" is an O.G and was like "Bob"(as far as technical prowess) and "Viper" (cool, level headed, lenient at times, understanding, works AROUND the book & only 2nd to "Maverick" in skills).

I think it's absolutely criminal that Val Kilmer never won an Oscar for his portrayal of Doc Holliday in Tombstone.
1986: "You are everyone's problem! That is because every time you are up in air, you are unsafe. I don't like you because you are dangerous"
2022: "The Navy needs Maverick! The Kid needs Maverick! That is why I fought for you! That is why you are still here!"

Maverick was in trouble in sequel to but only was saved by Iceman who as an Admiral fought to keep Maverick when Admiral Cyclone wanted to take Maverick out of the Navy and ground him from flying.
God I’ll miss Ice! 🥲
I love where he says the Navy needs Maverick. All the way back to the first film, Maverick never fit the Navy's mould of what they want a pilot to be. But Maverick is better than the Navy's mould and that's what many organizations don't understand, someone that doesn't fit is actually better and can teach better ways of doing things. That's why I hate standards for anything. But only people like Ice recognize that and are willing to go against the grain, which is why the Navy needs Maverick.
actually no maverick is like one of those men out of time type of deals. even by the 1980s the navy was pretty much over regulated lot of red tape bureaucracy. maverick is like a ww2 fighter pilot in the 1980s.

To an extent for sure. Not everything out of the box is good for a team though in this case Maverick certainly was.
God bless you Val Kilmer
You absolute legend.
I admire and respect Kilmer for actually speaking with his voice. I'm not familiar with the specifics of his condition, but considering he needs a computer to speak, it must not have been easy
As I understand it, his voice in this scene is part-altered, part ADR by his son.
Kilmer's voice was recreated with his son's coupled with previous recordings of his voice.
@@tonybaihao4178 Joseph Kosinski said they did record Val's actual voice for his lines. They only used samples from the recordings of his son and previous performances to make his voice clearer and easier to understand.
Kilmer had a good Batman voice as well. Unfortunate that after 'Batman Forever', he didn't get another film to prove his mettle.
Val has throat cancer
I love Top Gun forever.💜
This scene was so incredible. Movie had so much heart

Typical at the end when he asks "who's the better pilot", proof of being great friends is teasing each other.
Loved this scene so much
iceman wins. 4 star admiral and CINCPAC... shoot that beats being a test pilot O6. :D
I as SO HAPPY to see iceman in this movie, it made a HUGE difference to the fans.
Iceman still have the coolest hair style.
One of the best part of the movie. Brotherhood relationship scene of this movie moves me.
The answer is both of them. The last one fighting for the other one. Iceman fought for maverick, he had something left to teach others, the next generation. Maverick fought for the rookies, because they have to believe they could succeed in order to succeed. Who in their right mind would fly under the noses of waves of surface to air missiles and hit a target many think would be impossible to even risk a stealth bomber or stealth fighter both of which is a costlier option if lost pilot and tech could fall into enemy hands.
Very touching having val kilmer in this.
You know some studio nitwits probably didn’t want Val in the film because of his medical issues or the old “he’s difficult to work with” excuse. Val made it known he wanted to return as Iceman and I was really happy to hear that Tom wouldn’t do the film without him. Tom is one of the few actors left in Hollywood who can dictate how things are going to be to a major studio.
Let’s also not forget that Paramount wanted to release this film to streaming 1-2 years ago. I’m glad Tom’s vision of how the audience should see this film won out.
2:11
You can really feel how maverick cares for rooster.
If you didn't feel that you ain't human.
Best scene in the whole film.
Tom Cruise having this scene with Val Kilmer was a class act, a great tribute to an amazing actor. Iceman really is a character in this movie. The fact that he dedicated the film to Tony Scott, director of the first Top Gun, often underrated director but with a unique talent for action, real master of the aesthetic of movement in film, was also beautiful to see. Tom Cruise really brought out the best in this movie.
He's the last movie star...able to bring out these moments and to make such dedications resonate with emotion but also be classy enough not to feel cheap or manipualtive or performative. He's the last person in Hollywood who has the presence to make a sequel better than the original. He's the last actor in Hollywood who can still get millions of fans to see his work by his name alone, needing nothing else except maybe the title of the film.
Val Kilmer is great, too, and it's nice to see Cruise the movie star pay tribute to Kilmer even as Cruise the EP pays tribute to Iceman an Cruise the actor has Maverick pay tribute to his one-time rival, long-time friend, and protector Iceman.
A great, layered, and beautiful scene that I think only Cruise could pull off these days without having his sincerity at any level questioned.
This is a very tender scene between Maverick and his old former competition Iceman, And now after 36 years, they are the best of friends! This scene really hits me hard because I am the same age as these guys and anybody that is around their age is like a rude awakening and reminder that we all get old and time flies! When we are in our 20s we think we are going live forever and most of us at that age act upon our impulses and everything is a competition. But later in life, we find out that having good people around us is what reality matters in life...
This scene was written perfectly. Tremendous work between those two. It made the movie.
“It’s a nice moment. Let’s not ruin it.”
☠️ 😂☠️😂☠️😂☠️😂
This scene 👏MADE👏ME👏CRY👏HARD👏
They both are each others “best wingman”, and if one can have a friendship like theirs, one’s life has no regret.
Very cool the way they were able to pull this off!
One of the best scenes ever .......................
This hug made me cry everytime I see it. It is more than a hug. It's means everything about two big friend. I need one.
I was thrilled to see Val Kilmer in this! Makes it all come full circle!!!!
I wanted him to type "I'll be your huckleberry"
That was very well done and I think Tom was not acting at one point those were real tears not just for the scene but for val...
love and respect for each other! a brother in arms.
It's time to let go. 😢
The Mav will do what needs to be done.
Great prop placement to have the Ice’s Top Gun plaque in the background of the “who’s the better pilot?” sequence
Val Kilmer can say more with a facial expression and a finger point than most actors today can speaking. And when Iceman finally summons the strength to speak to Maverick, you just know how deeply important those words are to him.
True. He's the male version of Meryl Streep.
Sometimes is hard let go of things feeling
I didn't watch the first movie but yeh this is emotional
You should have watched the first movie before seeing the sequel.
@@patrickworkman1014 that's exactly what I did. I made sure to watch the original before watching this. This scene even hits harder after watching the first movie. And overall this sequel made sure to both honor the original and be its own movie.
You should see the first movie and watch the sequel again. the original Top Gun from 1986 is a classic as Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer shared numerous scenes together in original as rivals.
that hug, was a true heart felt hug, not acting
Love this movie
Iceman!
"It's time to let go" is a call back to Goose death scene, "you gotta let him go, sir".
As wingmans, they never leave each other.
I love this scenes. Although both ICEMAN and MAVERICKS are competitors, but they respect each other.
I was hoping he would type, "I'm your huckleberry."
That would have been hilarious.
In average sequels stories are cheesy. Top Gun 2 is anything but cheesy. Especially this scene with Iceman. One of the best in the movie.
Absolutely heartbreaking!!!
Iceman forever!!!!
One of my favorite scenes in the movies my wife and I saw it in late May. We are both fans of the original and this scene is nostalgic watching Maverick (Cruise) and Iceman (Kilmer) together again.
This was a Fantastic scene so touching.
Iceman is and always be the far better pilot. End of discussion.
And they see so much of them selves in each other
1,000 times better than the first top gun!
Imagine being at each others throat and then the moment combat comes to them, they became brothers and stayed that way till the end. So much so that no one could understand Maverick better than Iceman. Ice knew that maverick needed to be maverick for his and Navy's sake, so he fought for him his entire career. He knew mavs shenanigans were too insignificant in front of the value he added to naval aviation. 'Its like it's always been, maverick screws up and iceman makes a call and it goes away'.
The bonds forged in combat are stronger than any other bond known to man.
Best scene
These two represent exactly what every military service needs - on the one hand, you have the guy who follows rules and procedures, who keeps situations stable and able to be handled, who understands the importance of teamwork and cohesion, and who has the talent and demeanor to be an ideal team leader. And then you have the loner, the otherworldly talented guy who see rules as guidelines and not definites, the guy who sees beyond limits and boundaries and has the ability to do things that are incredible but as great as that is, it is INDIVIDUAL talent and doesn’t mesh with cohesiveness. That guy will get it done, but it’ll cost. Both are needed and both- in a perfect world-understand that both are necessary.
This is an oscar worthy scene for both men. A perfect example how letting the actors emotions carry the scene and not a bunch of wasted dialogue.
Fantastic scene. Great movie. I had no idea Val Kilmer was going to make an appearance. I purposely didn’t read or listen to anything about the movie prior to going in to see it. I wanted to be surprised- and I was totally surprised. Never expected it.
He was fantastic.
The best scene in the movie

I Love This Scene In Cinema When Fan Is Off 4DX
Met Val Kilmer briefly at a convention. He wasn't doing too well because of his cancer fight.
It is how Ice ended their first conversation, and their last conversation.
I think it's time for another month with paramount... I'll, yet again, spend it watching Maverick every other night. And Hunt for Red October the alternating nights :) Can't force myself to watch anything else from their offering :)
