To be fair, even meal kits expect the purchaser to have certain things on hand, I don't think those should count against the cost of the meal. A few basic pantry items are advisable for anyone preparing food. I love the fact you are helping people often forgotten...I once could only walk (we had no vehicle) to a dollar store with very little money and a young child, so thank you.

I don't agree with her having to add in the seasoning to the total..most of us have salt..pepper..milk..and butter/margarine at home

    • @juanita_rocksteady2761
      @juanita_rocksteady2761 3 роки тому +7

I don't agree either. If you already have it in your cupboard it's NOT cheating. Most people already have basics like milk, eggs, and butter in the house, I know I do. I also always have a ton of spices.

I've been binge watching all your videos. I especially love the Dollar Tree ones, and I'm looking forward to trying out the chickpea curry (using a can of carrots, either chickpeas or shelf-stable tofu - which my Dollar Tree does sometimes carry, coconut milk, rice and Dollar Tree curry powder). Thanks for all your wonderful suggestions, Jaime! =)

I had, for some reason, a box of hush puppy mix in my cupboard. I read the ingredients on the back the other day, saw there were no real seasonings in it, so I made it according to the directions, then thinned the batter out, added cinnamon and a bit of honey and cooked it as pancakes. Wow. They were so good. My oldest son and husband liked them better than regular pancakes, lol.

I think these are great videos. There’s so many people who are having hard times, who feel like they can’t make warm meals that taste good. And feeding your family is the most basic need so not having that is such a doorway to spiralling downwards. I like that you show people where to start and encourage people to improvise and add in what you’ve got at home. And for those of you who live where the garden season lasts more than 4 months - you can always add basics like green onion tops - everyone who’s got a spot of sunshine and a pot with soil can grow those. 💛

Great ideas! My fridge when out and it is always nice to have shelf stable meals. I have found that saving condiments that come from take out are usually shelf stable and can add flavor i.e. bbq sauce, soy sauce, honey, salt, pepper, etc... A jar of salsa can also be used to flavor many dishes like chili, soup, omelettes. Love your videos!

  • @mordeys

most ppl have salt pepper onion powder garlic powder. i think ppl get pedantic about "only $5" or "only 5 ingredients" . it becomes counterproductive to the subject. even when you are having a broke pay period we all have pantry basics and usually we are supplied with them. i have seen ppl complain that salt is and ingredient... or you need water so that is 6 ingredients. if you are one of these ppl please stop. i say call it pantry basics. or refrigerator basics. pantry basics. oil, salt, pepper, flour, sugar, garlic and/or onion powder. refrigerator basics butter/margarine. eggs. milk.
while you may be out of one or two of the basics but you usually have the others.

I LOVE their crusts! They are crispy and so cheap! You buy a 6 dollar frozen pizza....or you could pay a basic 3 -4 dollar recipe (actually more, because the sauce lasts a long time and the personal pans sizes have 2! You can add some jarred peppers, pepperoni...some sun dried tomatoes...country boone ham trimmings! YUM!)

I wanted to see this kind of video and I'm happy you took on the challenge, Jamie! I think you were very creative with the shelf stable limitations. I think we all have oil and spices on hand so I don't think it's cheating to spice things up a bit! I've seen that biscuit mix at DT and wondered if it was any good. I'll have to pick it up next time!
I think I mentioned in another comment they sometimes have True Lemon at DT. It's great to put in water but is also good to use as a lemon replacement In recipes. I saw another UA-camr use it to season the DT tilapia.
I saw those crescent roles a month or so ago and I picked up several bags because I figured they wouldn't stay around very long. I wasn't a big fan of them as bread but I used them to make a French toast casserole and they were wonderful in that! I think they would also be good in a savory casserole.
Anyway, thanks so much for doing this. I live in a rural area and DT is one of the only close grocery options so these kinds of videos are always inspiring not only to keep costs down but also to make creative meals with no fresh ingredients. I agree with all the other commenters who would like to see a Thanksgiving meal from DT. I hope you give it a go!

This video series teaches you to work with what you have. I'm from a small town and if you couldn't get transportation to the grocery store or needed food before or after their business hours, the only place to shop was the convenience store gas station a mile and a half away. Great ideas for shelf stable meals. For the first meal, I probably wouldn't have served bread with pizza. I wonder if a can of vegetable blend drained and added on the pizza would have rounded out the meal? The idea reminds me of a pizza my niece gets from a pizza delivery.

Yes Jamie I maybe a Thanksgiving themed dollar tree meal. And since it is a holiday meal, if you were making a regular holiday meal you would have a little more budget. Maybe make the budget $15. And see what kind of holiday meal you could make. The pizza looked good but I would totally cheat on that one and add more toppings to it. Thanks for sharing. Catch you next time. 🍕

These are great meals for the money for sure. If you have a few extra bucks you could easily kick them up a notch by adding a green salad and still feed a small family very economically. Here's a tip on the biscuits: my Dollar Tree has Bisquick cheese and garlic biscuit mix that makes 6 nice size biscuits - and there's cheese in the mix. They are quite good! Brush them with a little melted butter and Old Bay seasoning when they come out of the oven and you have basically duplicated Red Lobster biscuits.

@@NoGettingOffThisTrain hi I thank you for responding cuz if I watch other videos people do have these spices and oils in their pantry and they do not count that as buying something they just add that as a regular light stuff that you would have in your pantry I agree with you 100%, and I do thank you for expressing the Health Nutrition and so forth not a lot of people will do that but I think you kindly and I will continue watching new old catching up with you but I think you again

I am enjoying your videos. A cheap pizza dough is a tortilla. And yes most people have a few spices. Also if one drains but not rinses canned foods a good amount of seasoning is reserved. Liquid from garbanzo can be used as egg in baking or w/real eggs to stretch your real eggs. Lentils can be sprouted. Dollar Trees w/out refrigerators food can't take SNAP

I cant eat lentils because everytime I try my joints begin to ache (I have the same problem with goji berries). What would you add to replace the lentils?

Hey there! That's really strange. Does your body do okay with beans? You could probably use kidney beans instead. =)
