- First look at the new Harbor Freight folding Thunderbolt solar panel. I test it out in the real world with the Jackery 290 and show a comparison with the other 100w Harbor Freight solar panel (non-folding) and the Renogy 100w folding briefcase solar panel.
This panel can put out close to 100 watts ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxOqI2yqX0XVrhR2BMJciTWrHJpG8FhJyg when positioned in the appropriate southernly direction, tilted to the optimal angle for your latitude/date, and connected to a higher capacity device than a 500. The built in kickstand angle is a fixed at 50 degrees. Up to 20% more power can be output by selecting the actual date and latitude optimal angle.The 500 will only input 3.5A maximum at 18 volts for 63 watts. Some of the excess power from the panel can be fed into a USB battery bank, charged directly from the panel while also charging a 500. This will allow you to harvest as much as 63 + 15 = 78 watts.If this panel is used to charge a larger device, such as the power station, then its full output potential can be realized.

Yes!! I have larger and more complex systems in my van and trailer - but nothing is as easy/simple as a power station. Just plug in the panel to the charge port on the power station - point it at the sun and its charging!

Wow thank you so much for the kind words! I have gotten to use this panel quite a bit now and really like it. It does great with the Jackery power station for sure. I have also used it with a charge controller and battery on a couple trips, and that worked great too.

This was great...you make the choice easy by explaining the Explorer290's charging limitations, but also the advantages to the folding Thunderbolt panel. Great video! When HF first came out with their suitcase I was hell bent on getting it. And then they had the non folding 100W panel on sale. $30 off so I couldn't pass it up. Space is not a concern for me at the moment. I'm so glad you compared it to the Renogy.

When I first saw harbor freight 100 watt solar panels I saw it at a cheaper price like you just said $30 cheaper and I thought that was very good price because I bought this out of that price or I bought one at that price and I came back a little bit later and bought two more and they were like maybe $20 more expensive and then I bought one more after that and was a few dollars more expensive yet and then he went up to let you 30 dollars more what you're talking about I never knew they're at that price but I've also found tractor supply sells 100 watts of the panels of the exact same thing for a $99 and Walmart sells 120 watts of pounds well actually the exact same thing for slightly less than that unless they're on sale just got to order them off the app store which you could buy out you can go and pick them up at the store or you can actually have them deliver to you and I don't know about all of them actually delivering so I'm going to buy one from harbor freight to pick it up from there buy one from tractor supply pick them up from there and order one from Walmart and they will deliver it to my house cuz they deliver the other things to my house and they'll do and I'll test their 120 watts to the 100 w which all the exact same size which are all exact same solar panels at least they look at the measurements are all exact same to see which one's better and I just think they're all the exact same so which one would be a better value to buy I know I'll let you know with comments on other shows of his I watch from UA-cam.

For years I’ve used goal zero and they have in my opinion not really separated themselves from other affordable systems on the market that are better and way more affordable I Offroad and overland in my JK and have found better solutions and this video just added more cheese to the pizza lol nice video Bud !

One advantage that the Renogy legs has is you can more easily adjust it to whatever angle you need for your location. But I like the HF legs too.
That is true... I tend to leave my Renogy panel at about 45ish degrees anyway... and then move it around during the day to point at the sun. And during the summer I just lay the panel flat on the ground during the middle of the day
My non folding HF worked great along the 45th parrall in central oregon
Awesome! I know you guys get some good sun if you are on the east side of the Cascades. I have some friends in that area. The furthest north I've used mine is Acadia NP in Maine and it did great. On that trip our trailer battery stayed topped off the whole time even with some rainy and cloudy days :-)

Unfortunately true haha. But fortunately your panel is likely functioning just fine haha. Similarly - the Jackery Explorer 1000 is limited to 125w input. Nice review man, too bad that the Jackery is limited to 67 watts of solar input, but I am glad that you compared it to your Renogy briefcase, because I always wondered about the quality of the case itself as I own multiple Renogy products and love them too. One mistake I have made is that people always need investigate of how much solar input is available on the power station as MPPT controllers are limited. Thanks again man, cheers.

I put hinges on my folding HF hundred what panels and now they fold together. I also have locking latches on them. Going out today to get another HF 100 watt panel to add to the three I already have. Then I will have two folding sets of a total of 400 watts.
That is awesome... tons of wattage on the go!

Nice review. However, it is unfortunate that the Explorer 290 is limited to a maximum of 60 watts of input charging from solar panels. You would think that having an MPPT controller would enable the ability to accept the full input from a 100 watt solar panel. Additionally, it uses Lithium-ion nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery chemistry which limits its life cycle to 500 charge cycles as opposed to portable power stations based on lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) which have a life cycle of 2000+ charge cycles. More charge cycles means a longer life of repeated use.
Yes I agree, if I were buying a power station today (as opposed to last year), or for regular/ongoing use, I would definitely look to get a lifepo4 based power station. I have a lifepo4 100ah battery on my trailer, its awesome! A lot of options for Lifepo4-based power station now, its great!

Well in general there is no reason you can't connect multiple panels together. However, depending on the panel voltages they can be less efficient if they are crazy different. Probably the more pressing concern would be to know how many watts/amps input the charge controller can handle.

Hey, Thanks for watching! I'm a family guy, so we just weekend mostly, but we have done a number of long trips with the kids. We were camping this past week and the kids were doing NPS Junior Ranger books, and one of the pages was on states you have visited, and we counted them up and so far as a family we have done 35 states and counting over the past 5 years. So all my content so far is kind of geared toward people on a budget (as I have always been) and with little time for projects, haha.

Well, my experience is pretty limited to Renogy brand controllers. I have 3 different ones currently and they all have served me well have some time now. I have the Renogy Wanderer from the cheap 100w panel kit that I use with the Harbor Freight 100w panel a lot, used it this past trip for my dad's 2nd battery on his rig, charging it at the beach everyday... I have the Renogy Voyager connected to the suitcase panel, I really like the info and display on that one. And in my van I have the Renogy DC-DC charge controller that takes input from solar and the vehicle alternator simultaneously. That thing is really great, but not helpful for a "portable" setup obviously.
As a technologist, I would suggest a DJI Osmo Gimbal for your videos! Thanks for the nice review and comparison!

Despite having a decent amount of camera and video equipment for my day job, I make 99% of these videos with my phone because its what I have on me at the moment, and honestly I'm making these videos "as I go" doing whatever it is I'm doing, otherwise the majority of my content just wouldn't be filmed at all. I love camping and being out in nature with my family, and that is how I prioritize my free time. Youtubing is just a fun way I can share my experiences with others and in no way a professional pursuit. But I do wish the videos were better quality myself, especially since I do know the difference! So maybe something like a handheld gimbal would be easy enough to incorporate. Thanks for stopping by!

100w panels on Amazon for $75-$90, add a 1/2" cpvc pipe rectangle as a prop leg for like $3 in materials. Much better value for the money. Could always get 2 add a hinge and make your own for WAY less with much higher output.
Yeah i definitely like that idea. 200w of solar vs 100w is a huge upgrade as far as practical usefulness in my experience as well.
That’s not why you buy a briefcase style panel.

So I guess if I buy the Harbour Freight 100 watt panels I don't need to buy any other adapters or connections ? And I was wondering if I should buy one or two of those panels ? I have the Jackery 1000. I just didn't know if it would be too much wattage using two or not. And I was also wondering if there's any way I could use the 100 watt Solar Saga panel I bought with the Jackery with just one Harbour Freight panel. Can you use two different panels at the same time or should I just go buy two Harbour Freight panels ? Obviously I found out the hard way about the price difference. Awesome videos tho brother. Imy sure you're helping a lot of people out with all these different videos you put out. And Harbour Freight should be hooking you up for all the advertising you do for them 😆

Yeah there is no problem using two different panels with the J1000 that I know. I've definitely tried out the Solar Saga panel with the HF panel and both hook up to the Jackery and charge without issue. The Jackery (or any other powerstation or charge controller) would just "see" incoming wattage from the panels. I understand that if the panel voltages are extremely different you lose some efficiency, but with the Jackery's charge controller limiting the input to 125w - any small percentage of inefficiency is besides the point in the real world.
I would definitely recommend having 2 panels for the Jackery 1000 - at 125w input - you want every watt you can get so that if it was totally dead you may be able to charge to full in one calendar day (8 hours). If you only have one panel that is putting in 60-70 watts in the mornings or evening hours and 90ish during the peak sun hours - you are gonna need 2 days of sunlight to get that thing charged from 0%-100%. This might be a "worst case" scenario, but if you get a stretch of cloudy days you are definitely going to wish for every solar watt you can find :-)
In good sunlight if your just topping off the Jackery or using minimal draw - one panel will be plenty. Its for those less than optimal times you will definitely wish for a second panel.

And according to the manual I could hook up four 200 watt panels to this thing and it would charge it in 1.8 hrs it says. Lol ! But it would cost a fortune for those panels. I'll deal with the one 100 watt Solar Saga and one Harbour Freight 100 watt panel. Maybe down the road I'll get a couple more of the HF panels. But that's really good to know buddy. Thank you for the reply. So it shouldn't need any different or extra connectors right ? The one that came with the Solar Saga has a splitter and 8mm end on it I believe. I think the HF panels is the same size ?

I can run these two different panels together right ? I think the solar saga came with a splitter that allows 2 panels to be hooked together at the same time. I just wanted to make sure I can hook two different panels together like that. I seen one of your videos using different panels but I haven't seen one where you're running different panels together at the same time. And like I said, I got lucky not knowing any better and bought the Explorer pro which allows four 200 watt panels to all run together. But of course they demonstrate with all solar sagas.
I need to add a little more to this question. I also just noticed there are 2 DC ports. So maybe I can just plug each panel into it's own port ? I believe there's two because you can hook up either four 200 watt panels or eight 100 watt panels. I'm just not sure if I can do them separately like that or do I need to use both together with a splitter. I just realized it didn't come with a splitter. 😂
@@kellyyetter1355 Oh that is awesome you got the "Pro" model. That input limit is a lot more capable than the regular Explorer 1000! The input should just see "wattage" - it doesn't know whether it is from a Jackery, Renogy, or a HF panel. You should be good to just hook them up with the splitter. I'm not as familiar with the dual inputs on the Pro, so I can't say whether or not to use the splitter or just use the dual inputs. I'd guess you can do either - it will just "see" wattage. With just two 100 watt panels, I can't imagine you being able to "hurt" the Explorer in any manner.
How long does it take to fully charge on the Sunny Day
Hey thanks for watching. It all depends on what you are trying to charge :-) if you have a powerstation like this Jackery 290 - divide the watt hour capacity of the battery or powerstation by the amount of watts the solar panel is outputting (say 80 watts for example).
So in this example you take 296 watt hour capacity of the power station divided by 80 watts from the panel and you get 3.7... so it would take 3.7 or say about 4 hours to fully recharge from 0%

Is this better than renogy solar briefcase?
Pros:
It is cheaper than Renogy (especially on sale or with a coupon from HF).
It is a smaller footprint folded, and unfolded.
It is lighter.
The legs are easier/quicker to stand it up.
It comes with an 8mm barrel adapter for using with a power station (Renogy comes with alligator clips)
Cons:
The Renogy is built better, the hardware is more substantial and riveted on, rather than attached with small screws
I have had my Renogy for 4 years and used it extensively all over the USA, and it has held up. I haven't had the HF as long, but so far it is great. If space is a factor or budget is a significant issue for you, there is no reason to not get the Harbor Freight panel. If I had to guess which one will last longer, I would guess the Renogy will, but so far, both are going strong! If I could go back 4 years, to when I bought the Renogy panel, I just would have bought the 200 watt version! But space is less of an issue for me, as I use it with my camper trailer.
Help: I replaced the first solar panel because it would not charge the jackery Explorer 290, even after getting a solar charger regulator. The second briefcase panel causes the blue light on the jackery to light up, but there is no input data -- the input is blank. Also, the solar charger regulator prevents the blue light from turning on -- I'm using the normal portal to connect with the jackery, and the blue light is on.
The Jackery should NOT be used with a solar charge controller/regulator. The Jackery has its own internal MPPT charge controller.
If the Jackery is not working with a new panel, it may have experienced a malfunction from being connected to the solar charge controller that you mentioned. Does the Jackery charge from the AC120 wall adapter? If it charges normally from your house power, then there is a problem with either the panel, or the wires, or the connector. Somewhere in that chain. If the Jackery will not charge or respond from connecting to AC power with the supplied adapter, then the Jackery may be damaged as well. But these are just guesses as I do not have your setup in front of me to look at in person.

I did not realize the solar panel and the jackery must work at the same time while getting sun to charge the jackery -- I was having the panel outside then bring it inside at night to charge the jackery. Although, I made five calls to customer service and Harbor Freight did not solve it until the fifth phone call. Two phone calls made me buy TWO unnecessary cables.
I think the Carrying Case is just to keep it from getting it scratched up... 🤔
Yes or from the panel scratching other items around it. But I'm less concerned with scratches and more concerned about shattering the panel face if my trailer hits a bump and things shift in an unexpected way
Tempered glass will take a lot more to break than you realize. I had a 12" Diameter tree fall on 4 panels. Only 2 broke cuz the frames actually bent 2 survived hardly a scratch

I got some 1/8” plywood and will cut to fit exterior face. May add Velcro strips or bungee cords to hold it in place.

@@kampinglogik well I guess I'll go look at Herbert freight's tomorrow but I never did see them with suitcase solar panels I did see him 100 watts of panels cuz I didn't buy some while I bought four of them and for a test I'm going to have to I'm going to have to buy another one I just want better do it tomorrow probably next week but I think I got to buy other solar panels next week and other solar panels I think that I would do test with so maybe disconnecting one solar panel on doing test with that one as well might tell me what I need to know and tell other people what I need that they need to know about three different companies solar panels and the price differences and where you can get them cheaper and how you can get them from the app stores from those three different companies that sell solar panels and for the different watches and if the wattage is all match one another for them I'll be the exact same size solar panels. I'm not lying I want people to know the best value of solar panels of the exact same mileage from different companies and saying lying is probably not the word to use I just why they have people get to solar panels at the exact same solar panels at the best price from different companies meaning more affordable.

@@kampinglogik oh I should tell you I bought a poly 100 watt solar panel That's rated at 5.64 amps but I don't agree with those amps because they're always wrong cuz every 10 watts my charger is turning into an amp but I just bought 200 watt poly solar panels for $168 that exact same size as Hubbard Street solar panels they also have the black solar panels and this is all through Walmart's app they told me I'll get it September 6th wall 18 of them as what I'm going to buy in a couple weeks of those pollies solar panels I like the blue solar panels as much as I like the black solar panels cuz the blue panels do a little bit more for me than a black swans do the blue ones start making electricity first and they stop making electricity last and like today and it's raining weather my solar panels my blue solar panels are charging charging my battery is to keep my refrigerator and freezer going when a black ones are not working at all. That's kind of why I go with variation of two different types of solar panels called the blue ones and the black ones I don't differentiate from the size yes I like bigger sizes I don't like solar panels really I like that 300 well I don't like those either I like the 400 to 500 to 600 w solar panels I'm not really into buying a whole bunch of 100 watts of panels when I could use like 30 405 w solar panels yeah I know what I need for power I know how many watts I use in my house you went up on my whole house I know how much solar panels I do need I just don't have enough yet but I did find a couple that might actually get them for me or ask you will actually deliver them or even deliver them to the the store where I can go and pick them up.
Maybe, when you're finished making love to the legs on those solar panels, you can compare how they each perform.
HAHAHA good one! Yes I do like those legs... I use this HF folding panel regularly, it is the most convenient to carry. Just got back from 5 days out beach camping and it kept my Jackery (which was in use about 20 hours a day) charged up to keep the fridge going during the day while we were out on the sand, and the fans going in the tent at night. So only good things to say about the panel. I actually have had great success with the Harbor Freight non-folding panel as well. It is just not as convenient to carry if you have limited space. Not sure I have a clue either. Thanks for watching and commenting. This is not a 240, its a 290, I can't speak for the 240, never had one in my hands. But the manual for the 290 states that the charge controller limits the input to 60 watts... If I'm wrong, that is what I am referencing. Either way, using this Jackery 290 with a HF 100 watt panel for the past year has been great, seems to work equally well with the new HF folding panel.

I for 1 appreciate the review as it greatly helps in my research for portable panels and power. I was searching products and this made it very helpful. I purchased both the Jackery 290 and the Thunderbolt folding 100 watt panel from Harbor Freight and I am in AZ in the desert. We get a ton of sun so this investment is incredibly worth it. I have charged the 290 from 5% to 50% in 2 plus hours with a input wattage of 65-67 as it fluctuates. As far as Nomad X with your rude comments, stop being a keyboard warrior hiding behind a screen and made up name. You people piss me off. Back to this video, thank you for the research and posting.
