AUTHENTIC RED VELVET CAKE - No Cream Cheese - No Food Coloring - The OG of Red Velvet Cake Recipes!

- In 1900, Red Velvet Cake was not made with bottled food coloring. Its faint red hue came from mixing non-Dutch cocoa (not alkalized cocoa) with acidic ingredients like buttermilk and vinegar. Even more importantly, the cake did NOT have cream cheese frosting. Instead, it was topped with ermine frosting, also known as boiled milk frosting, roux frosting or cooked flour frosting.
In this video, we will recreate the original Red Velvet Cake. It will not have a deep red coloring and it will not have cream cheese frosting, so if you're looking for that, this isn't your video. But if you want traditional and authentic, you've come to the right place!
You Will Need:
All Purpose Flour
Milk (Preferably Whole Milk)
Eggs
Butter
Crisco (lard)
Non-Dutch Cocoa (Hershey)
Buttermilk
Apple Cider Vinegar
Sugar
Red Food Coloring (Completely Optional)
Salt
Baking Soda
Vanilla Extract
Baking Spray
Thank you..

I climb up on my soapbox whenever people call those horrible NON CHOCOLATE, red-dyed, cream cheese monstrosities "red velvet cake".
