      Cream Puff War is literally the song that got me into the Dead. I grew up going to garage rock shows in Detroit in the late 2000s and this song was the sort of transition for me into more jam style music.

    This is great! What a setlist, including some of my favorite numbers that were banished from the Dead kingdom ( Golden Road, Cream Puff War). And plenty o' Pigpen!

    At this point they were just another Bay Area hippie / underground band. You never know what the future holds.

    LSD I love the early dead so much that I would do anything to put together a tribute band called cream puff war or 1966 or call the band White lightning yeah there we go I'm in! who's in with me ? We have to dress just like 1966 and sound just like the early dead fast and furious

    • @duckman531
      @duckman531 3 роки тому +3

      That would be fun! But Jerry was too fast for me to keep up on guitar and Phil was too improvisational for me to keep up on bass.

    What a GEM ! To me this sounds like around the time perhaps right before, during, or right after recording their 1st self-titled LP - what with the songs, the GD's high Energy/Phrasing/style of Licks, Tone of Jerry's Guild Starfire guitar, etc., not to mention the great Pigpen on the Vox Organ/Vocals. What a Treasure this is indeed. Thanks so much !

    Jerry’s playing here is nearly spot . They have a really good energy in this performance . You can tell they were playing a lot these days in ‘67 because they were hot.

    On this and other versions of Cream Puff War, Garcia's soloing is unique in that it sounds like the lead guitar work we typically associate with psychedelic music (for example, East West by the Butterfield Blues Band or Stacey Sutherland's work with the 13th Floor Elevators

    Adding Mickey was the biggest mistake the boys ever made. Bill and Jerry keep this thing moving at the speed of light. Did not need a "percussionist" to slow it down to the speed of mud.

    • @philovance1940
      @philovance1940 2 роки тому +1

      Agreed- nothing against MH - great drummer but the Dead never needed 2 drummers. Too bad they lost Pigpen too. He gave them a real earthy authenticity.

    • @henryedwards6408
      @henryedwards6408 Рік тому

      Totally agree, again nothing against MH great guy ( at least when I met him) and great percussionist. My GD live experience came about in the Billy only years and it’s there that holds special meaning for me. As for the show- it’s wonderful to hear the GD live the day after their first album was released. So different than the later shows. God bless Bill Graham and everyone in the organization that put on Winterland shows ( that means you Barsoti bros),
