Global Underwater Explorers recommended bottom timers over decompression dive computers for a long time. And although this has changed a bit, OSTC, Shearwater Peregrine, Perdix along with other dive computers are still seen as unnecessary toys for your daily deco or keeping a dive log by many technical divers. Unfortunately, many bottom timers in the market do not have a good display (in contrast to the best dive computers featuring OLED displays) - but Heinrichs Weikamp changed this with the new Heinrichs Weikamp Bottomtimer! I got the brand new unit to test it out and here are my first impressions!
You can get the Bottom TImer here (no affiliate!):

I've done a lot of vacation diving where a dive computer is required, especially on a liveaboard. I already own a Perdix and Teric. I like 2 just in case. When I do GUE, they are ok with my Perdix in gauge mode. Something like this is worth considering though.
I guess most providers might not know the difference 🤣
Good looking bottom timer from a well regarded manufacturer; also reasonably priced at 40% of their tec oriented dive computers. I have yet to fully understand the logic of using a bottom timer vs a full computer. Yes we plan dives, and contingencies, and always try to dive the plan; under these circumstances a bottom timer seems reasonable. But when when the Crap hits the fan and you go way off plan for some reason having a computer that can give you an on-the fly deco schedule seems like pretty good insurance to me. I understand Ratio Deco as possible insurance but Ratio Deco is a strategy, not a deco model, and it has a band in which it works, if not in that band it does not work.
That’s true…however, it’s hard to leave the band where it works. Using a BT makes you pay more attention in my opinion
When the fan goes into action, there is no risk of forgetting to switch gas on the bottom timer or switching to the wrong gas. And, there are more than one band (rule) where Ratio Deco works.
Yes that’s right! I like it simple and stupid (because that’s how I am 🤣)
Kann man den Bottom Timer als Sporttaucher als Tauchcomputer verwenden?
Er hat halt keine klassischen Computerfunktionen…
Can the average depth be reset independently from the stopwatch? Reading the manual, I get the impression that the "stopped average" depth gets reset every time the stopwatch is reset. What is the intent behind linking the stop watch and avg depth resets?
I don’t know. I’ll check this tomorrow
@Roger Lacasse Yes you can reset it idependently ! Thats makes him so great.
It seems like this company was really inspired from the Shearwater Perdix model. Casing and buttons are almost the same… even the display is similar. Many less options but a better price. I’ll stick with Shearwater personally.
Well…I think they were inspired by themselves…it looks like their other computers
heinrichs weikamp computers are running OSTC which is open source software. So having a "cheap" bottom timer which can be upgraded with an open source nitrox / trimix capable software is like a dream! Which will never come true. This is nonsense as a business model.
XDeep had this. However, look where the Black BT is today. So from a business perspective…yes you’re right!
Würdest du sagen, dass das jemanden der gerade den Fundi gemacht hat und etwas Erfahrung sammeln möchte eine gute alternative ist wenn man nicht 1000euro ausgeben möchte?
Ja absolut!
Hi Ben, is the dive log downloadable?
No, there’s no Bluetooth function or something similar integrated
@@DoktorBEN Neither with the usb cable?
There’s no connector. Well, there is, but it’s not easily accessible from the outside. It’s inside the battery compartment and I don’t know if it’s possible to read it out by that.
@@DoktorBEN Thanks a lot Ben. I've just wrote an email to the company asking for that. Will let you know.
"The Bottomtimer's log files can not be downloaded. That was not intend to be included in the Bottomtimer, sorry."
Is the average depth on display at all times?
You have a permanent shown average depth and a second (optionally shown) average depth that resets/restarts with the stopwatch.
Thank you! I just wanted to write exactly this 😄
@@heinrichsweikamp569 thanks guys and Ben!!
I liked the old Liquivision Xen bottom timers size and dimensions. Pricewise this big HW bottem timer should cost no more then €230 .
Their HW OSTC sport should cost no more than €400.
I have looked a while on the OSTC sport when it was €480 in early 2021, but didn't bought it. Now it cost you €525.
Anything highprice is Shearwaters territory.
But its good to see something new on the hw website.
Why does only shearwater have the right to ask high prices?
