Another Anime Review: Horror Done Wrong. Comedy Done Right!

  • Another is one of those animes that is more fun to review than actually watch. I've been having a real craving for some suspense mystery horror stories and this was NOT IT. Do you guys have any suggestions for me? After that breath of the wild 2 teaser I've been really hankering for a good horror mystery.
Did anyone get my Another Way to Die joke at the end because basically the entire review exists for that gag.

I forgot this video existed. But I stumbled upon it again. So, I'll respond to every point you made in the video.
0:10-0:16 - Aunt Reiko only makes a scene in school as her "Mikami Sensei Persona", and she was only seen outside of school by Misaki Mei, and Mochizuki. Of course, this was all shattered at the beach episode, but it doesn't really make a difference.
1:14-1:20- "Nothing else happens". So what do you consider "horror", then? The entirety of the first episode has to be the creepiest introduction to a horror I've ever seen. Most people agree. Great pacing, the washed-out coloring and visuals neatly fitting in with the phenomenal soundtrack. If you consider this "a comedy", then you're obviously just trolling and forcing your opinion here. Because anyone who sees that episode would obviously not consider it a comedy, yet you're questioning how anyone can take it seriously. Again, completely forced.
2:26-2:31 - I don't care whether you consider this show a horror or a comedy, but laughing at a death scene like that is a scum move.
3:05-3:11 - again, I don't really get what you're laughing at. A person died. There is nothing to laugh about. You're just forcing it.
3:15-3:22 - Contradiction. You mention the fact that no one tells the protagonist about the curse or Misaki, but this is exactly what happens if someone did tell him. The so-called "chronically clumsy children" you talked about are smart enough to prevent their own deaths.
3:45-4:30 - "Another is supposed to be a horror anime? No. This can't be right (...) There's no way this was ever intended to be scary. This has to be some sort of mistake (...). Did the people who voted on this even watch the show? There's no way anyone is taking any of this seriously, right?" - you’re literally describing a horror mystery show, while still calling it a comedy. Yet again, acting ignorant for the sake of being ignorant.
4:32-4:50 - "*_Sometimes the curse leaves them alone_*, and sometimes it doesn't. And it's all basically just useless to even try." - that's a contradiction. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, therefore it's useless? The fact that it has worked sometimes in the past means that it isn't useless. The reason it didn't work that year is because the first death started way early for anyone to notice.
5:10-5:43 - She was in a state of panic. She had no idea what she was doing. Also, just so you know, even if Misaki and Sakakibara weren't there, she would've still died either way. It doesn't make a difference whether she took these stairs, or the other. Her death was inevitable.
5:48-6:13 - That's certainly not a bad point. I think that it's understandable that the students didn't tell him recklessly. Because the head of countermeasures wasn't present in the first (and I think the second) day. After she does make a presence, however, Sakakibara has already been stuck with Misaki and kept speaking to her. No one had the bravery to go tell him *_now_*, because ultimately, the same outcome would arise as the student with heart disease.
6:15-6:33 - She didn't even know that her sister's death was the first causality of the year. Sure, she suspected it, but she wasn't even half-sure. So, the only thing she could do is play along with the Talisman until the deaths just started happening one after the other. This is why she lied to Sakakibara about Misaki Fujioka being her cousin, because she didn't want to believe that her sister's death was caused by a curse. After Kubodera Sensei's brutal death, it was finally clear to Misaki that the first death of the year indeed happened in April.
6:57-7:00 - Wrong. That's basically the only comedic scene in the entire show.
7:41-7:59 - You have to read the exact wordings. "The curse kills *_at least_* one person a month." - it doesn't definitively have to be only death a month. I think they even mentioned how, in the previous years, there were also multiple deaths in a single month. There was never a month where someone didn't die, hence, the specific phrasing "At least one person".
8:45-9:00 - I wanted to avoid mentioning this, but you don't have to laugh after every five seconds of bringing up a point. For one, it's distracting, and secondly, it's disrespectful and offensive to the fans who actually loved the show. If you were perhaps more civil and calm, the dislike bar wouldn't have gone berserk. Anyway, you can only temporarily leave town in the year that you're part of class 3-3. So I don't really get what you're trying to say.
10:30-10:50 - It's not that no one thought of it, but that 1) Even if someone did think of it, they'll automatically hide that thought from everyone because it is "immoral". And 2) Let's say they decided to pick that as their counter-measure. So... Should they kill everyone in the class until they finally find the extra student as they did in the last episode? Or should they listen to someone absurdly saying that she has a glass eye that could see who the extra person is, and not think that she instead has Eight Grade Syndrome? Exactly who decides who the extra person is in order to kill them, anyway? It's definitely not Misaki. She wasn't sure of how eye powers a hundred percent. She was skeptical over it. Which is why she asked Sakaki to show her the class photo 26 years ago, and she finally assures herself of her eye ability. Completely understandable, since she wanted to get rid of the extra person herself, so she couldn't take responsibility if her eye power was actually inaccurate and she ends up killing an actual person instead.
11:24-11:30 - by the way, you're mentioning all these points which are supposed to be "plot holes" of some sort. Okay. But what does that have to do with it being a comedy? Nothing. If Berserk has one plot convenience or a plot hole, that doesn't just automatically make it a magical girls show or some crazy shit, lol. Likewise, just because Another has plot holes (it doesn't, by the way), it doesn't make it a comedy.
All in all, every point you made had a lack of any logic because you kept laughing and letting your emotions get ahead of you, the exception being a single point, which wasn't even half-good. Let's say that you did come up with good points. So... How is it a comedy again? I don't know how it's even possible for a human being to draw a connection between "plot holes" and comedy. A show doesn't have a plot hole intentionally. It is often unintentional. This defies the fact that it was intended to be a comedy, because it just wasn't. The author of Another is actually very popular in Japan, and he has written several other mysteries in the past, and none of them were comedic in any way. So, yeah. That's it.

I'm slightly horrified someone took me this seriously but also impressed you wrote a college level dissertation to refute a video that's basically just me laughing at a show I didn't like.
I am really glad the show worked for you because ideally everyone would enjoy everything to some degree. For me the "comedy" came because the horror just doesn't work for my particular brain so most of the show came off as kinda try hard or nonsensical. I really wanted to talk about the show because it elicited strong emotions from be but I didn't want it to turn into some rage fueled cold and calculated break down of every plot hole and I thought it would be more fun for all involved if I played up the feelings of WTF and unintentional humor I found in the show.
I am genuinely glad you enjoyed the show as a horror experience but for me I enjoyed it for all the unintentional humor it produced.

Dude, no offense but laughing during every single gruesome death scene while your avatar stares smugly into the camera makes you sound like a sociopath.
I would've either cut your audio and used that of the anime and put your reaction after the scene or at least removed the avatar.

    • @DallenMalna
      @DallenMalna  5 років тому +4

The avatar actually is used as a way to keep the system from copyright striking me so that's why it is up so persistently.
That's also why I try not to use much of the anime's audio. Too much and the video gets removed.
As for laughing I genuinely found the scenes funny. Real injuries are horrific and I can't stand the sight of people hurting. But the anime physics were so over the top that it felt more like a gary's mod game than an actual injury.
Ymmv but something like saw is a lot less funny or even higurashi because the wounds feel and look somewhat more real. But in this case the damage was so silly and cartoony that it just made me laugh.
I appreciate the feedback, and I do see how it come off a bit heartless but that was more or less my actual reaction when watching the show. Kind of the whole thesis of my video is "how did people find this horrific when it's so gosh darn silly?"
For me personally it just felt closer to Tom and Jerry violence than real injuries.

    • @npc6817
      @npc6817 5 років тому +2

@@DallenMalna yeah I get that but the reason this feels different from tom and jerry is that those character take the death of those around them seriously, they grive their loss and even though the physics get cartoony the look of sheer terror in the eyes of the victims is hard at least for me to ignore.
sure, from an outsider pov I felt kind of as you did when I rewatched it, but as someone who basically emphatizes with all characters from all fiction it felt really crepy framed this way, like you were making memes using Isis executions videos or something like that.
its mostly me, but I figured I couldn't be the only one taken aback in those moments so I wanted to warn you about the impression I had.

I've lost family members and friends so I definitely can empathize with the pain of losing someone irl, I think my brain just couldn't connect with these characters personally but it's important to remember that for other people they can.

Yeah it says it’s horror yet all the ways people die in this WHOLE show, other than the nurse and the extra person in class, is completely hilarious after I gave it a second watch through.
You know the most, and I mean the most stupidest thing to ever be reveal was in the later episodes the glass eye girl can see the dead with her fake eye... so why the fuck didn’t she just say “My magic eye can see who’s dead so let’s kill or ignore that person.”. It’s like the gods of death is watching this class and are trying to one up each other with their kills. During the first watch through for me I was kinda scared and felt like some of the deaths where stupid as hell and weird. But the moment I have it a second go I laugh at this whole series, lost my shit at the deaths of the kids, ESPICIALLY that one kid in the flashback who was decided to be the only one with an umbrella and got struck by lightning. After that everything became a comedy for the rest of the episode, until we got to the trip to the mountain.
Anyway this comment is weird and badly worded, but I gets you can chock this up to how poorly the rules of the dead student was manage that everything couldn’t be taken seriously because of the sudden spike of people dying in the MC’s classroom.

I've been a writer for 9 years and I've basically done writing as my career. It's been going well for me so far. But speaking as a writer, you've made quite a lot of terrible points that made me flinch a bit. I wouldn't be dissecting them, as someone else already has.
It's not the best horror show I've ever seen, it's above average I'd say. I'd say your review on this needs a little bit of polishing.

If you read that comment then I assume you also read my response to them? Why would I polish something that is by nature little more than pointing and laughing at something that made me chuckle? I actually sometimes do serious critique of games and anime but I worried if I did one on this anime I would become very bitter and angry about it. This seemed a much better way to express what enjoyment I could get out of it without becoming really grumpy and further insulting fans of the show.

@@DallenMalna As reading more increases your knowledge on the fundamentals of story structure and plot, it also applies with critiquing shows. As you stated "Comedy done right, Horror done wrong" it's quite obvious that if you hadn't viewed other comedy or horror shows, you wouldn't be the best to judge what comedy or horror should be.
Watching shows of a specific genre helps in expanding your knowledge on the story structures of those specific genres. Which in turn, helps you get better at critiquing something. Because you wouldn't know if something's done wrong if you don't know how that thing is done right.

@@17thesteadfast79 I disagree to some degree. If I studied story structure extensively (say within the realm of books) and fundamentally understood horror as a genre a great deal of that knowledge would carry over. Even though I have watched a great deal of anime and horror and comedy you'll notice even my joke filled critiques are focused on story structure almost entirely and not on how bad things like the animation or cinematography are. I'd say the merit of my criticisms as non serious as they are lay on my understanding of story structure more than on something specific to the medium and as such would be valid even if this were my first anime. That being said they're really not even critiques so much as my edited recreation of my gut reaction to the show. If you would rather I do a dry point by point angry deconstruction of why it's bad art I guess I could but again I think it's better for everyone involved I just share my laughter.
