They are instinctively trying to create a hole from which they can bury the source of the smell, or trying to cover the powerful scent. This is an evolutionary behavior :)

I am a Westerner living in Asia. In 12 years, every lady friend I have had loves durian. I saw Andrew Zimmern (from the Travel Channel) offering sliced durian to Thai children and they ran away. Never the less, China bought 700% more durian from Thailand this year than last year. The durian orchards have signs warning of falling fruit. It would be sad to go on a vacation to Thailand and being killed by a falling stinky fruit. Oddly enough, the word FARANG is Thai for both durian fruit and foreigners.
